Commander title
No voting plus 1 on a commander would give great results dont troll good idea’s mesharn I want this game to succeed
I agree. It’s like buying a seat in Congress. Any yahoo with enough money could buy a seat. If you were elected commander, it makes having that little blue thing above your head mean something. Having 5 commanders running around the field because they (or their guild) bought the tag just doesn’t work… too many chiefs and not enough indians at times.
Taking away the existing mechanic would tick off all the players/guilds that spent the money to get the title. I say leave that in place.
My suggestion:
Create a new role: General. Make Generals voted on by the server on a weekly basis. Have a nomination period. Have time slots (to encourage coverage). A byproduct of this process might expose coverage weaknesses. By being elected a General, give them access to a special chat channel that allows them to communicate with other Generals.
Expanding on this idea (and keeping the existing commander system), treat the commanders as second in command. Have a chat channel where the Generals can talk with commanders.
With the chat channels, you’re basically created a dynamic, election based, guild-like hierarchy… only it’s for all of WvW on your server.
Just a thought….
Get real dude. You think corporate and politicial players who are conferred with leadership title such as CEOs and Ministers earned their title entirely through merit? The game is mirroring what the real world is. Money talks louder.

Pretty much this.
If anything we need to be given the option to hide certain commanders we don’t care to see personally (and have guild settings for this as well.).

WvW needs to give something besides badges. It needs to reward involvement not through some random token system, but something based on deeds done. If I lead a successful zerg, I should receive some sort of entitlement. If I earn enough of that, I should earn proper honors such as being a commander

That’s a valid point. I take it the majority are okay with the current system. If so, that’s acceptable. The current system is better than no system… was just trying to think of ways to improve it.
I personally don’t like seeing several commanders all on the same map with no cooperation between them. I was just thinking there might be some mechanic/system that would encourage or reward good leadership.

You earn respect and recognition by your servermates. If you do well, people will listen and follow. If you fail quite frequently or not learn from mistakes, chances are people will troll you or just decide not to follow you. So, your response to your reward is the respect of your fellow peers that you have earned rightfully so.

I think if you right click the commander’s portrait and click “join squad”, you only see his icon and none of the others.
Would be nice if it required you to buy it, and then people had a way to vote into it, like, the one with the largest squad (members wise) is the only one that shows up on the map.
I’m not against people getting commander and using it if there’s only one on the map, but it’s nice to know which one the server is behind, to prevent a ton of confusion.

I agree also, there should be some minimum requirements to getting commander title – like having 1,500 kills in wvw, captured 20 towers and 20 castles. We should also have the option to select who we recognize as a commander…… when you have 5 commanders fighting as one zerg …it’s time to stop recognizing a few of them as leaders.
People act as if “leading” a zerg was such a momentous effort.
A Commander is nothing more than a rallying point for a zerg. If someone is willing to pay 100G to be such a rallying point….fair enough.
Once you involve voice-com it really doesn’t matter if and who that blue tag belongs to. Because that is when the real commanders appear.
You guys are looking at it all wrong, everyone here thinks they know what Anets plans are for commanders. Everyone seems to think that commanders are very important for leading around pug zergs that do not know what to do. Well you are all wrong. If that was the case, then yes indeed it would need to be earned.
The game is way to young to be developed on the level Anet is expecting. Ever think that maybe the mark is at 100g for a reason? Maybe it is so a guild can have a few of it’s own leaders to follow. Think about it, why when you join a squad can you only see your commander unless you get super close to others? Why is there a squad limit of only 30? Why are the marks only 100g and nothing else? Maybe, just maybe it is so guilds can get them for however many people they need depending on thier guilds size and go to battle organized. Commanders are not for leading pugs, it just happens to be that way atm b/c no enough people have the marks yet.
Eventually gw2 will get to a point where every guild will have 1-15+ commanders depending on how many they need. Stop acting like commanders are the servers leaders and let the game play out like it is supposed to. In a few months commanders will mean nothing to you.
Until then, Deal with it., and try to find an organized wvw guild for yourself and stop crying on the forums.

I have to agree with this. Commander Title should be earned. I have been really demoralized on Dragonbrand WvW because our commanders are useless. My guild tries to rally people to our cause – we organise towers to take and camps to attack, but everyone follows the orders of some commanders who have no idea what they are doing. I know of one good commander and that was Cristin Star (I believe that was the toons name).

@ThyOwnage – I respectfully disagree.
I can see where a guild can want to have ‘guild’ commanders for their guild….so the blue icon can be something seen by only ‘their’ guild.
Anet should add requirements and achievements to this before it’s presented to the entire map and further limit the amount of commanders on one map at anyone time to 3 – based on their highest achievement ranks. People should not be flashing commander icons when they are following 1 commander already like a zergling. If within 3 years everyone in pvp can easily afford a commander title – what will it do to wvw if the entire map is filled with commanders ?
a commander following another commander as a zergling has no right to use the mark of a leader.
The commander title should work like this imho -
3 commanders max per map – 1 to cover each server.
the commander with the highest achievements in, kills, capturing towers and castles gets priority….so if a lesser commander is on, their icon gets disabled and the more experienced commander gets enabled. It would work like a server commander ranking – based on what they achieved in battle, not purchased in gold.
What should really be changed is instead of Commander books costing gold, it should cost badges of honor. Anyone can farm 100g in PvE. Not everyone have the patience or will to farm 500 badges or so. Some Commanders are really good because they have a lot of WvW experience.
