Greetings, noob alert

Suggestions:

1) Pls we need a graphic option to see our OWN character names (and title and commander tag). The reason is: a) for video recordings, when we post videos, it is nice to show the video viewer who this is a video of (by clearing showing the character name) and b) to help as a reminder for commanders to turn their tags off (yes it is at bottom of screen; I have a tag on each of my characters, but showing the name/title/tag/guild on your own character so you appear to yourself the same as you appear to everyone else would be an even more helpful reminder)

We get a lot of immature commanders fighting with each other on Dragonbrand. I won’t name names, because that not going to solve any problems. Instead, consider this:

2) In WvW maps, have an option to somehow list all the current commanders and how long they have been commanding (i.e. had their tag up). While not totally accurate, at least when a new person comes into WvW they can say “Ok i’ll follow the guy who has been commanding for 48 minutes, rather than the guy who has been commanding only for 3 minutes”. Something like that.

3) Maybe somehow an interface to VOTE OFF bad commanders. I don’t know exactly how this would work. And I don’t mean to ban, disable, or remove commander tags from accounts. I mean more like: if enough people vote against a commander, they can’t USE their tag for a certain amount of time (well maybe they can go to another zone). Kind of like a chat spam filter, but a community voted commander tag filter. Again, I don’t have a clear vision of how this would work (and NOT interfere with gameplay, nothing intrusive)
NOTE: Sure, any voting thing is prone to abuse by large guilds of jerks.

4) Commander tag limits. I don’t mean an amount limit — I have no problem with 5-15 commanders in a map, and some servers are mature enough to handle that (coordinated). But I mean, I don’t think it’s healthy for a person to say they were Commanding for 8 hours straight. Maybe within a 24-hour block, players with commander tags need a time limit restriction (120 minutes per day, or certain hours per month). Some kind of restriction, or maybe use WvW levels to buy more time? Yes, I know people with GW2 accounts sign that they are a certain age and are suppose to have a certain maturity and self control. And some will say if you keel over dead from playing games too much, it’s your own darn fault. But…. IDK, I hear some players saying they been commanding for 5+ hours straight; people on vacation and nothing better to do, sure maybe it’s fine. HOWEVER, time restriction also encourage OTHER people to be commanders, sort of a way to force new people to learn about it and take over for awhile. Well, it’s my opinion. The previous option, of just SHOWING how long they’ve been in-map commanding — maybe that alone mitigates this?

Just tossing that out there. Sorry if such ideas were already discussed previously, I did say noob alert.

As for DB commanders fighting.. It’s just irritating to see kids fighting (name calling, “my tag was here first”, etc) about a stupid game. That’s life, sure. But we get home to just relax, we don’t even care WHO is commander. We just follow the blue dot :P Get over yourselves… ^^ <3

Hello, might I offer a suggestion.

This is what we practice in sor. If there’s a commander already on map, the 2nd commander will whisper the 1st if they need assist in protecting the back lines. If it’s ok the 2nd commander will usually ask for 10 pax to help run back line defense. This is more orderly and more organized. And helps rally the pugs faster as some will follow the 2nd Commander if they like small team action.

This works well as the 2nd commander shows respect to the 1st commander on scene. (unless the 1st commander is a troll)

The only problem with doing something like this on dragonbrand is that there isnt any respect shown between certain commanders, constant arguing and flaming of each other, especially in eternal and late NA. The bickering over who is commanding and who trolled who and who was a kitten the other day gets old real fast. I find the best way to avoid it all is to avoid ebg, and avoid places where certain commanders are. I only go to ebg now if i am following a guild group, or solo roaming.

I second this – It would be nice to have such and option

Always consider possible abuses (ie, someone afk with it’s tag up to gain commander time) + for organised servers that has a reaon to have multiple tags running, that might be detrimental to new commanders

You pointed it, any voting options can be abused… And I never met any commanders that were really bad altogether – some were good at roaming, others at defense, others at fights, others at strategies, others at taking objectives, and so on.
If someone is plain trolling, we usually report that player; but sometimes, people get angry at a commander for not doing something (eg: roaming commander didn’t back to defend a paper being upgraded tower)…

4) Commander tag limits
I do believe that it is up to the player to know it limits.
Sometimes I know I will tag up for a long time, and I will plan strategy accordingly.
Example, by having an havock group deny supply to some foes while another group make some faked attacks to make them use their supply, while I use the bus to prepare defense on our thirds, so that when the bus goes in the third, the ennemy is already weakend…
Now, preparing defense does not make sense if I’m limited to three hours. Especially since I’m a night player and I’m only tagging up when there is noone else. If I tag at midnight, I know my bus will just decrease in size until 5 or 6 am, when people connect an hour or so before going to work, and that no commander will likely connect before 7 am, often later….
Situation changed lately, we have more night commanders, but still, limiting the duration of a lead, is not Anet to do, it’s up to players to know their limits.
Sometimes people are sleepy and yet stay because we are already so few. Should a limit be imposed as per how long a player can be connected? Because some players are taking on their sleep time to keep playing?

5) Name calling
Use report options, try to raise awareness on your server about it, so that people react to name calling and such to condems it… Your server forum is a good place to raise those points, and try to see if they would be open to commander’s rotations, ignoring name calling commanders and such…

It’s all about working together and being able to resolve differences in a mature manner. Having such a wide spectrum of age groups this becomes very challenging but not impossible.

Some important life lessons can be learnt here. Who would have thought a game could provide for that?
