Commanders that Don't command.
Because like many things in this game, you get it if you toss gold at it and I guess some people are that rich and bored in the world of Tyria. Plus it’s what all the cool kids are wearing.
Seriously though, I’ve seen a few instances of this myself, latest one was a guy just kinda standing there while everyone was scrambling to save a keep LOL.
To be fair, sometimes the commander is looking at the map, coordinating with other commanders on other maps or directing via voice comms. Just ‘cause they’re standing there doesn’t mean they’re doing nothing.
(Note: This may not be true in all cases, I’m not saying that all stationary commanders are active, just that you shouldn’t be too quick to judge.)
Lately I have seen alot of these running around that never lead or even speak at all about anything ever and just run around blindly.
Why?
are you on same teamspeak channel with him ?
May have forgot to flag off. Done it sometimes myself.

Yup I forget sometimes that I have it on. This is actually quite easy to do when your mind is on the battlefield or you are called away by some real life issue.
I have seen some but those that I know do command and sometimes command on ts or mumble, or they also go afk to eat or something and forget to turn it off

They are not quite as bad as all those people that buy a Commander badge and never step into WvW. You see them at dragon events, you see them in Lions Arch, you see them all over the PvE maps but never do you see them in WvW.
Then if they do happen to enter WvW for the first time they think they can take over and start giving orders because they have a Commander’s badge! Some take time to learn the ropes first but they should badge down until they do. The system is so broken it is laughable.

There is nothing bad about being a PVE commander. ArenaNet intended such things because they put commander trainers in PVE areas. Commanders are not WvW exclusive. It’s meant to be used for both or either and sometimes even in sPvP
Sometimes you simply have more than 5 people or multiple groups trying to coordinate privately or doing something specific. Until Arenanet gives us some way to group over 5 people that is NOT a zerg magnet… people will use it for things other than actually leading the zone and zerg.
I find the in-game multiple grouping system in GW2 to be the worst in the last 5 MMO’s I’ve played. They need to modify the grouping system to be used for any size forces and for private guild squads if needed. Hiding the commander pin AND still retaining all the functions of a squad would be a good start.
Some of the best commanders I’ve encountered are relatively quiet. Allcapping in /t is not the best way to lead a fight.
It’s rough out there with that pin. Commanders who don’t communicate lose followers pretty quickly. Even when I’m in TS with other WvWers, I still try to type into team chat for the PUGs. They’re just as important!
I probably type too much, but people are more likely to stick to me when I do. Of course, while typing and autorunning, I’ve led groups right off a cliff…more than once. I usually start shouting “Don’t follow!” But they do anyway. At that point I tell them their repair bill is my stupidity tax, and they should send me the bill. :P

On Gates of Madness we have solved the commanders who don’t command problem. The only one allowed to give commands is Supreme Commander ARM. Everyone else is not allowed to pretend to be a commander.
I know what you mean- I know of a one in particular that got the title and when he realized commanding isnt as easy as he though he doesnt wear his title ever unless hes in PvE but around other commanders he doesnt

Im really happy im playing on Underworld…
Some commanders dont command – so ignore their pins and do something useful (im pretty sure if there are more than 15 ppl on the map you can organise even without that dorito (however when push comes to shove such groups usually scatter because everyone thinks differently))
I dont type anything anymore, PUG’s either dont care or dont pay attention anyway. I only use our VoIP, if they decide to join, then they know whats going on, if not, well thats why their PUG’s :/…
Im at a point now where if im not commanding my guildies and im on a map with no other commander, I just solo supply camps with it on, in the hopes that people will come to the reality that they should automatically rally on me, but 99% of PUG’s dont anyway.
IMO a Commander shouldnt have to ask people to rally, it should be expected, but its no loss to me, I can only do so much, people shouldnt be allowed to use the “Im a PUG I didnt know any better” excuse.

I miss you when you were in Darkhaven.
Anyways, what I hate the most is when you have little to no commanders in WvW but there are lots in LA with their tags on..
I just follow reliable commanders.
The tag does not indicate anything more than someone spent 100 to get it.
Sometimes I prefer the more quiet commanders to the people basically yelling about everything all the time. I understand passionate and competitive play, but the abuse of uppercase characters and name calling has the opposite affect on me. I will eventually block someone that yells, rages, and calls everyone names because people are not listening.
Think about it commanders. When fewer and fewer people seem to respond to you and don’t do what you ask or demand from them, maybe the collective is just slowly, over time adding you to that blocked list.
I will add that this is the number one reason why I do not have a commander’s tag. I am one of those people with a low patience threshold and would most likely upset more people than the opposite.
I offer this observation as constructive criticism only; beware of your map chat habits as they could be the cause for poor support at times.

Not all people want to be a part of the zerg and do what the commander says. There are lots of solo/small group roamers that contribute to your server, sometimes more than that 20+ zerg capping empty tower.
Just saying commanders shouldn’t judge other players because they don’t want to play the way commander wants them to. If they want to follow you, they will follow you.
WvW Roaming with Mesmer
I am a commander and always command in ts, and give only few commands in map or say chat, other than that, all people have to do is follow me, and I keep asking people to get on ts, because I cant type and fight at the same moment.
I did see some commanders from who you sometimes not only wonder what they are doing, but wonder if they know what they are doing themselves, but in those case I usually start communicating with the person through pm’s. don’t forget that there are international servers (like piken square, which is the server that I play on), and not everyone can speak english very well.
on the part of obtaining a commander’s badge on another way than with money, did you think of a possible way? 100 gold is quite some money for a badge, and it should make sure people who dont want to command wont get it. on the higher tiers (I play european tier 3 at the moment, been in tier 2) it is impossible to command without a badge.
than, as a third part, on people not following/listening: it is the commanders responsibility to coordinate and kill the enemy zerg, however it happens alot of times we buff might up, charge in, and than I have 30 people backlining and 5 people charging in, who die, and the backlining people get pushed back slowly, which doesn’t work, and there were cases in which I got blamed and people started swearing at me because they wiped, simply because they did not follow the commander, in which I just took a break because commanding can be frustrating.
also, a commander might/should have a better tactical view than the most other players. commander should know when it is possible to revive downed and when they should respawn and run back.
also, a thing people should realize is that a commander is totally different than a raid leader.
oh, and p.s. stop calling friendlies pugs, calling them like pugs is calling them scrap, or noobs or whatever I heard, because they are friendly after all, and also great players, something everyone should realize; is there a player which you notice is less experienced? try to help the person rather than treating it like a noob, help him/her getting a build etc, it works better, believe me.

I just follow reliable commanders.
This, this and this.
I’ll watch quietly to see how commanders behave. If they are decent and not obnoxious I’ll support them. I’m fine with people making mistakes (I make enough of my own when leading). Its always better to have some direction rather than none, even if its not optimal.
