Competitive Viability
In the current meta, if you want to roam engi. If you want to pugzerg/organize zerg or gvg guardian.
I appreciate the response, thank you. For guardian, is greatsword or hammer the preferred organized/zerg choice? Or are they pretty much equal in that aspect?
Some guilds in GvG or open field fight run guardian with hammer/GS more DPS oriented (a lot of damage), but always with Staff guardians too. Is the guild choice how many guardians in Staff/GS or Hammer/GS or maybe Staff/hammer.
Staff is great for obvious reasons. Hammer has a GREAT blast in low CD with great damage, and the CC of hammer is great. The back draw is the field overlap if you don’t pay attention with the third auto attack when water field is needed or blasting darkness, you need to know WHEN you should cancel the third strike. GS damage is great, and the pull is amazing, if you can sinc the leap with you team is amazing too. The problem with the GS damage is the retaliation, GS#2 hit 7 times to 5 enemies, if you hit 5 of them with retaliation it will melt you pretty fast if you aren’t fast enough to cancel the attack or can’t recover from that damage after.
Or play what you want and have fun…. Unless getting into a wvw guild that gvgs, most will be happy to have another ally no matter what class they choose to play.

The truth on this increase as you go down the tiers…
WvW Rank 3800 (Platinum Veteran) – PvP Rank 69 (Shark) – 25,9k Achievment Points
Mërcenaries [Sold] – Ferguson’s Crossing
Most guilds run a split of hammer/gs and staff/gs guardians. They both have their perks, but a zerg would gladly take either. The empower is great off staff, and with some cleric accessories, it can be a very effective heal, whereas hammer provides an immob and the ring which is nice for catching anyone with stab down. Pick whichever you like, and roll with it!
Another vote for the group/zerg = guardian or engi = roaming.
Oddly neither class really needs an ascended weapon as they tend to rely mostly on utility and utility weapon skills to be effective.
