Completely Unbalanced WvW matchups.
No, its so that new people who buy the game, and who are put on a low population server, because the others are full, get disheartened and frustrated, and quit the game. Because anet does not want new players to have a fun gaming experience.
Because anet does not want new players to have a fun gaming experience.
So this is what it’s come to now? Not “it’s a hard problem to solve” or “players might respond poorly if ArenaNet was more active in managing populations” or “it’s a temporary imbalance that will fix itself,” but literally YOU CAN NOT HAVE FUN HAHAHAHA.
Jeeze.

T3 here-Enuff said? Excuse me while I lick my wounds before reset. What’s the number for 911? :P
Please tell me what is the point of matching a server against another server that outnumbers them by a dozen to one? Just to see one side totally run up the score? Oh I know it’s so that any new players who enter WvW are just cannon fodder for whatever server is on top.
Because the difference in ranks from first to 24th or 27 isn’t a smooth line, but a series of steps – some of them quite steep. Sorry, but it’s just like that. Couple that with the slight randomizer in the matchup algorithm and sometimes you get terribly unbalanced matchups.
Who would you rather be matched up against that you think would be fairer?
EDIT: Just saw that this is your first post, so will assume second account or troll. Disregard my input.
since when are 1st posts, troll posts? WVW is screwy enough to bring new players to the forums hopeing for answers, they will learn soon enough, there are no answers to be had here for WvW
since when are 1st posts, troll posts?
Took it from context.
the phrasing of the first post is what makes it look like a troll post. as phrased, the question assumes that matching a low population server against a high population server was done deliberately, and that population is something taken into account by the matchmaking system.
so yes, troll post.
for readers who want to know the actual answer, it’s complicated but in general the reasons are:
1. server strength is primarily determined by the players. servers where large number of players choose to play do better than servers on which fewer players choose to play. Arenanet does not control where players choose to play (although some of their policies regarding transfer pricing have arguably made things worse, not better). the time zones players are in also can have a significant impact.
2. servers of similar strengths do not naturally occur in groups of three, so when you have three-way matchups it is often the case that one server will be significantly stronger or weaker than the other two. this is especially a problem in NA tier 3, because there are 4 servers with similar ratings, so every week 3 out of the 4 play each other in a ‘good’ matchup, while whichever server is left over has to play much weaker opponents. the only way to fix it so that tier 3 doesn’t have to play against a tier 2 server is to have that leftover tier 2 server play someone in tier 4 instead, which would be an even worse blowout.
3. even the most well-matched matchups get stale and boring if you end up playing the same opponents over and over. also, matchup stagnation leads to a problem where server ratings become less accurate, which can prevent servers that deserve to move up or down in the rankings from doing so. in order to prevent this, there is some randomization added to the matchup system, so that there is some variety in who you end up playing against. but sometimes there’s no good choice — you either play the same opponents you’re bored to death of playing, or you get opponents you have no chance of winning against. it’s not always possible to consistently (or sometimes ever) find varied matchups that are also competitive, because there are typically very few servers with ratings close to your own server’s.
TL;DR – bad matchups can and do happen because math.

WvW was meant to be a sort of casual endgame from what all the vets say. If you really want to fight/play war, everyone will encourage you to bring a lv 80.
New players have a ton of stuff to enjoy before lv 80.. PvP, Crafting, PvE, Jump puzzles, map completion.
But don’t forget to start selling and trading to get those gems banked up, you’ll probably want to browse the recruitment on community corner for a real WvW guild or server when your ready.

I was going to complain about my server not getting an easier/fair/equal match up, but then I looked at the rankings for the server T3 servers and thought “Maybe my server isn’t so bad after all.” But we are still being hammered. Top server already has double our score. But at least the big dog we are fighting doesn’t have a 300 point ranking lead on us.
But honestly, I know it might be a troll… but yeah I’m a new player and I’m having a hard time finding a silver lining. Chin up for next week?

You speak as if unbalanced matchups are only an occasional problem that arise from the necessity for variety in matchups.
But unbalanced matchups are, in fact, the norm.
Why so many posts about this now? Because looking at all the expansion announcements, it’s clear that Anet has no plans to resolve this.
Everyone just join Gold and top 3 servers you will get use to the que you just que up before you go to bed to play at morning.
As much as I understand that facing the same servers week in and week out is likely to lead to stagnation, I also have to question whether WvW is putting its best foot forward with the current matchmaking system. The revision to dailies was announced as an attempt to entice players to branch out to other content, including WvW. I would be surprised if that change did not attract a fair number of new (PvE) players to WvW. In fact, I am one of them (well, I played in Sept-Oct 2012, but that was a long time ago).
I’ve found that WvW can be fun, even if you don’t win. My server hasn’t since I came back, though we’ve placed 2nd more often than not. I’ve found that quality can outweigh quantity. However, I’ve also found that that aphorism reaches a point of diminishing returns when the numbers get too imbalanced.
I’ve no idea where my server ranks with regard to overall population, or even WvW participation. However, I do know that having zero chance in fight after fight after fight due to large participation imbalances does not create a good impression on those new to the game mode. Imbalanced matchmaking runs the risk of alienating at least some of the players attracted to the game mode by the daily change.
I also have no idea what impact server participation in WvW bears in the ranking algorithms. I suspect, though, that that number does mean a great deal in the overall rankings, and ought to have much greater weight in match-making. I’m not giving up, I’m not raging, but I am asking ANet to consider revisiting the way matches are made for the sake of everyone who plays. One of the reasons I left WvW in the first place was that for the first two months the server I was on steamrolled everything. While winning is heady, it can also get old if there is no chance you’ll lose.
Yup …this is an old topic that Anet could fix (or at least I could) in a weeks time.
Nothing will be done….find a different topic.
Dont worry guise, we’re doing much better in T3 now than we’ve been doing in the past. The Green server only has just barely more points than the other two servers combined, as opposed to being at 15k points 4 hours into the match.
So my server is ranked 2nd to last in WvW, it’s weeks between when I pop in there and actually see a commander so that’s out. This leaves EOTM as my only WvW like experience to actually do something and have fun.
I don’t remember the last time I wasn’t outnumbered. It’s pathetic. Attached a screen shot of tonight. Totally dominated by other two sides, literally getting camped as far back as they could get us. This game is a joke of balance.
I won’t be buying any gems and especially not an expansion if this isn’t fixed. This isn’t a unique situation we are camped at spawn, regularly. The outnumbered buff isn’t enough, the zergs on my team are so small a single arrow cart is enough to hold us off until they can come farm their bags. It’s a horrible experience and i’m sick of it.
Fix your game.

The problem is, you’re treating WvW like a PvE event if you pop in to look for commander tags and then go to EotM when you don’t. It doesn’t work like that where you are – start by learning how to flip camps solo, and before the white swords come up.
Once you’ve mastered that, get yourself some rams/catapults and announce in map chat that you’re going after x tower and go do it. If there are people on, they’ll join you. Then you have more bodies to work with.
Dropped down to dead last less than a year ago, currently at rank 14. Don’t depend on someone to tag up for your WvW experience.

Looking at the map right now, 11:59 pm Friday, I think you spoke too soon (one server ticking +0, the other +20).

I had no idea it took only a few people in rams to make a server go up 8 or so ranks! Wow! I’ll buy a ram and get right on that. :P
Dang lazy WvWers, they just need to learn to pull up their bootstraps like you did!

People getting things done attracts other people who want to do things in WvW. And if it turns out that you play at an unsociable hour, there’s lots you can do by yourself too.
But yeah, we pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps. You’d be hard pressed to find much in the way of recruitment by us – it all just became critical mass over time. It’s less fun when it’s just you trying to do everything yourself, but when you recognize the realities of the situation and do what you can, it starts the trend. shrugs

I don’t know much about WvW history, new and all. But I do know that some of my server-mates were talking about one of our better commanders and his guild leaving to join your server. People were pretty upset about it in ts. People get attracted to servers that do well, thus I imagine you also had an influx of new players to go with the bootstraps. Please note, I’m not belittling your server, even with the above joke. I’m sure you guys have lots of loyal players who worked really hard. But I like making joking. >:D
I can say I agree, I notice an influx of players when a good commander is on the field. If we don’t have a good commander people wander and get discouraged and leave. For reset we ended up with a fat group running around and our commander was sad that we didn’t have a single small guild group to deal with smaller tasks like taking back camps and protecting towers from other small groups. Instead he had to drag the entire mass around to do grunt work. I was looking at all the guilds and it was rare to see more than a few people from the same guild. Seems like my server suffers from a lack of unity. I’m not delusional enough to assume the wily little coyote can fix that. I’d rather say stupid jokes at my server and get sent cookies. Will do tricks for food.
Also I died trying to take a camp, I tried. I didn’t make it. But I don’t have any rankings(I got to Solider today), or good gear, or much of anything. I did okay. I killed two of the guards and everything else was at 30 or 40%. I actually almost rallied focusing one, so close! So I think now with my slightly better gear, more experience, and sporting exotic sigils (huge different between rare and exotic sigils), I may succeed. /fingers crossed

Our server is amusingly resilient for this reason, and it’s often been the unfortunate t3 server for the longest time that got stuck with a server that should be t2. We eventually dropped a bit because of internal issues, and came back up to t3 last week because someone killed the overgrown grub, which is kind of like dividing by 0. As expected we were defeated by enemies that were much more numerous and skilled than us (barely holding on to our garrison if even that), but we still managed to queue a map every day. I found that funny because we usually don’t queue anything by Monday.
A lot on our server are just casuals that blob EB, and play wvw to take Stonemist castle while getting some bags along the way. So we tend to play exactly the same regardless of blowout or not. Of course, if we were to go in for the long term which is entirely possible, that would have negative effects.
This is hardly a brag and definitely I would say our current environment isn’t the one that would grow a serious wvw scene, but it does have its advantages at times and when we manage to put up fights even without a proper GWEN train on this server and an estimated 25% uplevels/bearbow rangers/pve builds.
Who really cares about the score when a lot of it is based of when you’re not on?
A lot of the server stacking is player driven, but Anet is definitely responsible for their neglect of wvw, which greatly discourages people. One can only hope the expansion will bring people back, and they will find ways to change a stagnant game mode.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

We really didn’t. It’s only since we’ve risen to silver (within the past month) that we’ve seen it happening. We’d get the odd transfer of a player or three before that, but not groups. It happened internally – the core of <20 people that were left in WvW when we hit the bottom kept playing (usually losing, if you look at our matchup history) but then a few more would come in, then a few more. Guildies of people who played WvW would come in for a bit. Once in a while there’d be an event, and people would come in. Casuals became more common, and there comes a point where they’re solid enough that they’re not really casual anymore, even if they don’t play often.
Lots of little things like that. Plus, and it can’t be denied, other servers going through their own crashes.
When you have low numbers (or are alone) you have to do what you can to enjoy yourself in WvW, even if it’s just flipping the camps (more fun on the BLs than in EBG) or taking the odd tower. With more people joining you, you can do things in parallel (gets the camps done in half the time, and can run supplies to the tower ram twice as fast).
In fact, if you are so outnumbered that you can’t take a tower, and don’t have enough people to pop Siegerazer, then flip an enemy camp and siege it up. You’ll get some fights and, while they may overrun you eventually, you’ll have some fun. More people will come in time.
I was looking at all the guilds and it was rare to see more than a few people from the same guild. Seems like my server suffers from a lack of unity.
No, we’re like this too. If you go to the matchup threads you’ll see servers that post youtube videos of current matchups – our groups tend to be hodgepodges as well. In addition, a fair number of WvWers on our server belong to multiple WvW guilds. CoT and EBAY and oG and Woe all have the same people as a fairly sizable chunk of their members. And we have smaller guilds galore as well.
But people work together and respond to each other, so it works out well enough.
Also I died trying to take a camp, I tried. I didn’t make it. But I don’t have any rankings(I got to Solider today), or good gear, or much of anything. I did okay. Get their attention then go around a corner or behind something. That will bunch them all up together, so you can drop more damage on them. If you’re picking targets, take out the scouts first as they’ll blind you, making the whole thing take longer.
Don’t be shy about dodging out of the mess, running behind something else (so they have to stop hitting you and chase you) and popping your heal. You’ll get it, and you’ll feel good about doing it.
Good luck.
Oh? Which one is yours?
Wouldn’t you like to know. :P
Good luck.
Thanks, and thanks for the suggestions.
First post doesn’t make me a troll buddy it just means I after many years of gaming have learned to avoid forums for the most part. However, I needed to vent after this last weeks match up with my server facing Fort Aspen and being completely out done by nothing more then numbers. 20 Alpha Golems in a single zerg seriously???
I am glad to see my post generated some positive discussion though.

You got that matchup because SoS has a high enough rating that it will sometimes get a T2 fight, which means that a T2 server will be displaced. You just had the lucky to get FA is all – it has to go somewhere.
This week T3 and T4 are pretty much back to normal, so you’ve got a regular week in front of you.

rofl. maybe T4. t3 isnt normal. unless this is what the score is supposed to look like every week.
Why does everyone think, that just because SOS is the weakest of the T2 servers that are around, that them being in T3 means the tier is balanced? You’re all kidding yourselves
ANET trys to say that they never intended WvW to have any balance as a defense to every aspect of it being broken. And also as a cop out to have not done anything to fix it.
People always complain about everything about it all of the time. Why do you think we are still complaining? Is it because for no reason? NO.
Will ANET ever MAN up and concede probably not.

Well, I did say “normal” and not “balanced”. And the OP was talking about a week in which the rank 4 server was against the rank 9 and 10 servers. So by comparison, 4 5 and 6 for tier two and 7 8 and 9 for tier three is about as normal as it gets.

There isnt any significant difference between rank 4, 5, 6 or 7 to either of the other two servers in T3.
edit: i changed my mind, some of the T2 servers are less BM than others.

I’m just trying to make the point that it doesnt matter who from silver league is in T3. They’re going to get utterly rekt by the population difference between rank 7+ and EVERYONE ELSE.
from the perspective of a T4 server you’re just like, holy kitten, there are 20 of them on every exit, from every spawn, on every map

The only reason that SoS got the short end of the stick is that the server got two consecutive bad RNG roll. A few fight guilds can’t stand the boredom and went off.
However, the PvX guilds and casuals are still there. It is completely different from a server implosion as some ppl exaggerated it to be.

^^This right here.
SoS is just as much a T2 server as any of the others. Matchmaking systems like the one in gw2 often create odd match-ups that skew the rankings. My guess, strength wise they would be 6th..
Anyways the problem is we have four people trying to sit on a 3 seat bike. What we need here is a way to make a t2 server in t3 balanced, or better yet a way to make a t1 server in t8 balanced.

Yeah. Am on the other outnumbered server to this matchup than you, and I agree. The only way we could possibly compete against a T2 (almost 3) server would be to work together. Given the absurdity of coordinating that kind of effort, I don’t see it happening. My suggestion was this:
1. We go into each other’s BLs. Help take towers and garri back – help siege, fight the common enemy where possible, each cap our own stuff.
2. The BL of the T2 server is split in half – we help, but caps are half and half. Their garri is open to either
3. EB is split as well, our stuff, your stuff. SM and T2 side are fair game.
This would require coordinating attacks on T2 stuff. I dunno. Maybe this wouldn’t work at all.
To really work, Anet would have to allow for a “temporary alliance agreement” between servers – only available when one server is out-ticking the other two like in your screenshot – so we can chat and no-friendly fire. Once there is a point tick balance, the temporary alliance is turned off.

This would work. Its a great idea. You’d probably need to just queue the T2 server BL and forget about the rest.
And when they get waypoints at night in Bay and Hills both will need to gang up on one or the other (Bay is easier) and both attack it simultaneously. Some of the best fights I’ve ever had is 2v1 in Bay, man those are fun battles. I’m not in T1 but friends have said this happens (or used to) all the time. And this is the way to do it.
The score will not be any better. But you’ll be having a lot more fun. All servers will be having a lot more fun.
Unfortunately players refuse to do it. They either hump EB. Or think they must defend the home BL despite the futility of it. And then people get discouraged and stop coming out and then you end up with even less people playing and get spawncamped.
You’re right too, in order to get players to do this Anet will need to give some incentive. I doubt temporary alliance but at least some scoring incentive or reward incentive. But I’m pessimisic after 2 1/2 years of unbalanced matches that anything will ever be done.
The “problem” with T2 servers though is that even if you 2v1 them during offpeak they have triple your numbers or more. Also there is no benefit in trying to PPT as a T3 server right now, look at IOJ being smart and tanking so SBI takes the painful brunt of being a T3 server.

I’m not talking about 2v1 in offpeak. Unfortunately in offpeak there is no solution. You’re just screwed.
I’m also not talking about PPT. 2v1’ing and both weaker servers attaking the stronger’s BL is not PPT’ing. It will not matter one lick to the score. What it will do is provide fun for all 3 servers in a bad matchup.
T3 is a no win situation. Too many guilds have band wagoned to T2 (their perogative). This has just increased the abyss between T3 & T2. No one desires to take on the situation of a T3 server. So, even if IOJ & NSP tanked-the situation would not change. Other servers would inherit the fiasco. Just an average WVW’er here, but I am not blind to the facts. Unless, there is a mass influx of guilds and ppl from lower servers (highly unlikely), this will be a neverending story. T3 peeps transfer to other servers-either up or down & the “Song Remins the Same” for whoever is unfortunate enough to fall in to the gap.
I’m in Underworld.
Trust me we’re experiencing Anet love every day in the say matchup since the past year. ; )
Plus some fow started cheating so yay.
Underworld
EVEN IF the two T3 servers 2v1ed the T2 server, it wouldn’t make a difference. There simply are not enough of us.
Idk, matches are pretty balanced at T7/8. SF is the only dead server. So all of you complaining about dead servers in t7/8, please tell me why keeps are constantly flipped, open field fights happen consistently, and you can kill 20 roamers an hour easily on a t7 server?
The idiotic match ups killed Crystal Desert. We’ve had weeks of getting our kittens handed to us and everyone stopped playing WvW. I don’t even recognize any of the commanders anymore. They all left.

You certainly blobbed all over the place enough last week to make me doubt the “… and everyone stopped playing WvW” part.

Yeah we had a blob occasionally last week but we see outnumbered buff more often than we blob.

I saw the same against you guys, except during NA nighttime of course.
In my eyes T3 is an dead end since over an year. T3 atm kills the rest of the fun you actually have gotten. IoJ is just the last victim, I have lost the interest in wvw and in the game itself. All these threads about the un-matches doesn’t bother anet, they closed the threads without an real answer, just waiting until one player is going to be off-topic. Even if anet would suddenly care about it, it is too late for my ex-server ioj.
There are no excitement about the addon. I’m not going to waste any more money in this game.
