Consolidating 5 mans into one tier

Aren’t queue times pretty bad on those servers sometimes?

I have only ever had a que once, in the past 2-3 months.
Maguuma and Ehmry Bay have the most roamers. You should move to a server facing them.
Part of the reason that we picked Tier6 was because there is much less fluctuation between the servers than say Tier3, where Maguuma is. We want a Tier where we won’t see constant changes in the server matchups that way we can depend on having constant small group action. You listed Maguuma and Ehmry Bay, but it looks as if neither one of them will even be staying on their current Tier for next week. As much as I would like to go up against more small group action, I also don’t want to have to continually hop servers every week.
ArenaNet is a company that thinks structured PvP is a legitimate form of competition, and thinks the new culling change was a good idea. I have absolutely zero confidence they have a clue on how to improve the current WvW state, which is why we are trying to get this going. We moved here because there’s less variation of points between the three servers than any other tier, and are more likely to stay together than any other tier. It’s also in a good spot as it’s not too low to where it’s a ghost town, but it’s not so high to where it’s constant zerging around the clock.
Given ArenaNet’s view on transferring, I can’t imagine there’s any small group teams that have any sense of fanatical server loyalty out there to not give this a shot. If you do however, enjoy Warhammer Online 2.0. This game has already lost a large number of solid players expecting a more competitive game, and more will continue to leave. I clearly see the arrow is heading down for this game and would like to do something to at least curb it for a while. I think there’s enough of a competitive population to give this a shot, but we’ll just have to see. If I’m going to play this game, I want to have as much fun as I can, and getting more competitive teams on the same Tier is how I imagine it. I know there are a lot of guys out there who would just continue to kill sheeple until the game dies, but I hope that’s not the case for everyone.
If you’re serious about giving this a shot, reply here or message me in game to see if we can’t get something going. We already have a few guilds who are strongly considering this.

I floated this idea a while back ago in one of the matchup threads. But, after thinking about it… eventually one of the servers will fall out of the “small group” bracket which would be pretty suq for them. NSP/AR/BP is pretty stable but all it takes is one dying server that used to be at the top to come crashing down and break things up. It’s a bit less likely that a server from below will have a meteoric rise.

We are definitely keen but concerned about the quality of WVW in general for when no groups are out roaming. In t1 there is already an active (albeit sparse) 5man scene.
Weve been thinking pretty hard about this. Unfortunately serious though only started after paid transfers went in so Im still trying to round some people up.

Hi there. Although I’ll leave it to others who understand the ranking system a little better than I do to figure out which of the 3 servers to join, (Borlis Pass, Anvil Rock, and Northern Shiverpeaks) I can say that all of the matches have been relatively close but the last 2 weeks (counting this one) have seen Borlis Pass in 1st, Anvil Rock in 2nd, and Northern Shiverpeaks in 3rd. While I would much rather see all of the guilds transfer to either AR or BP so we can fight against you, if we do have a good amount of groups transferring to our tier I think NSP would probably be the first server to transfer to in order to keep the tier stable. Others can chime in though who know more about tier stability than I do!

The biggest advantage towards forming the 5 man tier in lower leveled tiers is the significant difference in size of the Zergs. Tier 1’s Zergs are undoubtedly larger than what we see. I don’t agree with ever running in 20+ but I know others do. Problem with moving up in tiers… The Zergs running around are much larger in size that what rolls around in our tier. Another reason we are a good place to house the 5 man culture.
PAXA and ENVY are well aware it will be a challenge to get guilds physically to our tier and as said before are willing to help. If we can get guilds in our vent discussing the move we will do everything in our power to make this a competitive atmosphere. Don’t use the tier to judge the talent.
As far as which server to xfer to… All three are good choices. NSP has the most 5 mans so of you want the fights BP and AR will bring that to you and your guilds faster. We are dead serious about making this culture reality. Post here or message me in game to discuss moving here. The atmosphere will be filled with real open pvpers… Who doesn’t want that?
Which server would benefit everyone the most and be the most stable?
Once servers balance over time stability goes out the window.. For roaming groups to be efficient these things need to happen:
Culling fixed
Aoe limit increased
Downed state mechanics altered
Distribution of players on map
Once/if these things happen, you’ll see roaming groups out and about.
It sounds good on paper, but a “5v5” server is going to get stale pretty quick; especially when groups start flopping, which is inevitable. Plus once the roamers log for the night the action will be real bad.

We run 5 every night and in 2-3 hours avg 2-300 kills. Undoubtedly those things you listed new to be fixed. Or else all skill based players will leave gw2. We are not inviting all 5 mans to a server. We are inviting them to a tier. And in all big time open pvp games 5 mans ran primarily during prime time which is what I said in original post is our focus for time. It will be a much more competitive atmosphere knowing the two other servers have anywhere between 3-10 5 mans roaming looking for fights.

True, GW2 is the only platform since DAoC which has shown any promise for this style of game play (small man, 5 v 5).
However, we all know game mechanics (down state, AOE cap etc.), technical issues (culling, small maps), ANET currents priorities (sPvP and PvE) and not to mention the pervasive zerg fest enjoyed by an absolute majority of players at all tiers, only just serve to limit this possibility.
ANET just teases us with WvWvW, and only provides a brief glimpse of it’s true potential.
Open world, competitive, skill based and most importantly non-static PvP.
Let’s just hope the upcoming WvW patch doesn’t completely flop, like most IRC DAoC eight mans …

This is a good idea. My friends/guild mates have been talking about dropping out of tier one. We joined SoR in hopes it would stay in the middle tier but it has sky rocketed up to #2. We would really like to get some small scale fights. The zergs in tier one are very good with AOE on the rez clumps and rezzing allies ASAP. In the lower tiers zergs were much easier to rock with out 4-8 man groups.
I’ve seen a big drop of interest lately with my guild mates. Spvp is all about holding points to win & WvW is a zerg fest (Even trying to ninja a tower with 5 guys 30 show up). We went from an active 15 man guild to 5-3 active members in the last 5 months. Hopefully presenting this idea to them will spark some life in them, otherwise we will be praying for Guild vs Guild.

Its a very nice tier, as PAXA said there is zergs but its not a constant 24/7 zerg fest, the tier itself has been pretty stable. I think this would be good for the tier and those people who like to run small mans, I think currently (and I’m sure PAXA can verify) NSP has a couple constant small mans, I don’t think either BP or AR have any set small mans. I would personally like to see more small mans on AR.
As with everyone else that runs smallman, I’ve toyed with this idea before as well. It’s tempting, it really is. Having solid, consistent competition would be amazing. But there are a lot of downsides as well. Despite the fact that I never zerg or run with commanders, I’ve actually become rather fond of my server. Also, I seriously doubt my guild as a whole would want to do it, and then there’s all the potential problems with the matchup system.
I wish you guys good luck because I think this would be a great thing if it gets going, but I don’t see myself transferring at this point. But if you get enough guilds and it seems to be pretty stable, who knows for the future.
Maguuma
This sounds like a fun idea but probably would be impossible.
The likely hood of the “small guild” servers staying in your tier only is extremely slim to none. And i would bet you money guilds on those servers will take advantage of the fact that they know when and how many people will be on to fight.
even a deathmatch feature in Spvp would be awesome.. just something where our 5 man can fight another 5 man……………………………………………………………………………………………….

due to the nature of the tier system it can never work imho. as someone mentioned above, all it takes is one server to move up or down a tier to destroy the initiative, which will happen sooner or later.
better to organize a ‘fight club’ with a few guilds from each server of your tier and go find a spot that is sufficiently remote from the main action not to get steamrolled by a blob.
some of the best one vs one fights (ok, not the same) i’ve had were when we had a group with people from the different servers of the tier + some randoms who stumbled upon us and were kind enough to understand what happened and thought it was cool.

I like the idea, I’m an oldschool emain roamer and nothing beats the feeling you get when you’re panning and you see another group to your left or right. The call goes out and the great clash starts.
I think if people are sufficiently motivated to maintain the small group mentality they will make it happen. Hell, I’d pay for a transfer for all my guys to get them to a server(tier) that is making this happen on a daily basis. I’ve even considered moving to AR/BP just so we could fight some of the small man groups on our server.
So, in short, make it happen! Get your small mans to AR/BP/NSP (probably one of the most stable tiers) and lets kick each other’s faces in!
A couple of random notes just to answer some posts and to just be realistic…
- Fight clubs are NOT the same, I don’t care what anyone says. Ready, Set, Go! Is not the same as, for example, tracking a small man and using terrain to flank them giving your team the initial upper hand or taking a supply point to lay an ambush.
- The maps are really too small, I wish they would make them double the size, the small size really makes roaming much more difficult.
- It’s still possible (probable eventually) that one server will change at some point in time and people would have to move again to keep the same rivalrys.
- I wish ANet would stop promoting zerg warfare, I see their reasoning, but it’s pretty lobsided at this point in the game. (Downed State, AOE cap, etc.)
Last note, if your group is good and you want to test it, I suggest trying out AR/BP and fighting the small mans from NSP. Solo, Duo, 5 man, whatever ya got bring it!

I agree. T2 is the perfect mix. There is action 24/7 for small groups here. We transferred off of a T3/T4 server because at night it was basically dead even for our 2-3 man roamers.
Great idea, but there is no way we would move. Sorry, and good luck!
http://teamriot.org/riot-media/videos/ • http://www.twitch.tv/teamriottv
I see this point, but I have been feeling like the best matches will not be only one tier, but a cluster of servers 4,5,6, or 7, who have similar populations. servers should be able to move up and down tiers without it causing a complete disruption for multiple tiers.
I think transfers would be more effective if we had a better idea of the populations outside of High and Very High. when dealing with 24 servers in a 8 tier competition they need more population information than High. If the 8 servers listed as high were actually close in population wouldn’t there be more movement between the lower tiers?
Visually I see the whole tier system like a lava lamp. you have high pop servers at the top, low at the bottom, and the middle where the two colors combine is where the most closely populated servers come together. unfortunately, the Highest High population server has far more people than the lowest High population server.
whats worse is at the bottom tier of the Very High pop servers, their lowest population server is fighting against High population servers and nobody at all actually knows what the real population differences are.
I think things could straighten out a little more if players had more detail.
A single tier can have its top team removed from a fall, or it’s bottom team removed because of a gain in tiers outside the match.

Yeah bigger maps are def needed, but I left that one out intentionally since they announced it wasn’t going to happen.
We understand the points of changing the game mechanics and tier populations. But that isn’t why this thread exists. We are gathering skilled guilds and inviting to run on our tier every night. If the servers change in a month (because they most likely will not before that).. We will all figure it out to make it work. Xferring isn’t that big of a deal if other people (us) are willing to help you get to our tier. Especially if it means at least a couple months of running into skilled 5 mans every night in pvp… That is the point of all of this.
I think it’s painfully clear to everyone that there are a number of broken mechanics and other mind-boggling issues that ArenaNet needs to address. Again, if you are waiting for these issues to be addressed shortly, if at all, you should look elsewhere. The game has been out for almost six months now and WvW has, at best, taken a step back. I think it’s fairly clear by now that the company has shown a high level of incompetence in taking steps towards improving WvW. I don’t know about all of you, but the much anticipated WvW update is likely going to be a disappointment. I think the track record of what has gone on with the game should be clear to everyone that the WvW changes are likely just rhetoric.
This is why we’re trying to get similar minded guilds together. We all understand the problems that exist, and they’re not likely going to change anytime soon. We can either trust ArenaNet to change the game for the better, as I’m sure we have all sat and talked about WITH EVERY SINGLE MMO OVER THE PAST DECADE. Or, we could trust that banding together with guilds that have similar play styles might be the better option. I don’t know about you all, but I trust other small roaming groups to heighten my fun in this game much more than I trust any ArenaNet employees to have a clue how to improve WvW. And let’s be honest, anyone who is serious about this issue knows that having more roaming groups to fight is likely a better change than anything ArenaNet could put out anyways.
Again, it doesn’t have to be this tier if we can make this happen, but I would like to see it happen. I just moved, but I am willing to move again if enough people are serious about this. And yes, servers will fall and rise, which is why we tried to suggest a tier that has the most stability. And if one server does leave, you could always transfer to another. I mean, gold isn’t exactly hard to come by in this game, and if that’s your excuse, you probably weren’t that serious about in the first place.
I would love to see this come to light, we just need enough people to realize fighting more people of the same play style is probably ten times better than what you’re competing against now. All it takes is a simple yes.

I actually like this idea, and the current AR/BP/NSP tier seems like the perfect place. All three have alliances on them that run zergs in prime time, but by no means is it constant. Its just enough that if 5-mans want to spec for zerg busting they can and have a reliable time finding them, but not too much that you will constantly be hunted by the zerg.
More importantly the tier is EXTREMELY stable. We have faced these same servers for 4 weeks now and AR and BP have met in over 12 weeks since week long matches. NSP is a welcome addition, and while they have had lesser numbers in terms of larger guilds, have more 5-mans to offer than BP and AR. (They are, however, doing much better this week, so we will see how it goes!) Most matches are VERY close and are only decided on the day of the reset, sometimes only having a few hundred points between 1st and 2nd, with NSP trailing no more than 10-20k points behind, usually. Our rankings are virtually the same, with the rank points spread about 60 points between NSP (the 3rd ranked server in the tier) and BP (the 1st ranked server in the tier) with AR about 25 points behind BP.
When it comes to the matchups, We are VERY evenly matched servers that love a good fight, and while I think some of NSP’s 5-mans can be kitteny forum warriors, always deliver a good challenge to those wanting some action. If you’re looking to fight them, BP and AR are both very welcoming servers to small groups, as we don’t have enough, and our strengths lie in our pugs in EB and larger guilds in BL. We do have roamers and small pug parties, but would benefit from more organized small groups on the field.
The only notes that I feel the need to disclose is that AR dislikes rock star commanders and large transfer guilds that think they can waltz onto the server and do as they please. We have placed 1st only 3 times, but 3rd only twice, so suffice to say we have fought for a close 2nd so many times that most of us are battle hardened vets that have little fairweather Wv3ers to speak of.
Oh and if [Newl] sees this somehow, Id love to see you guys again. I don’t know how loyal you guys are to GOM, but [Paxa] and [Envy] should definitely fight you guys. Speaking for myself, I think AR would be very proud to claim you as our own, but just as happy to battle with you guys wearing BP garb.
Happy Hunting! And if you decide to visit our tier, I hope you pay attention to the overall balance as well and don’t transfer too heavily to any one server. All 3 seem like strong, proud communities and love where we are in the rankings. Come see how we make war!
