Dear all,

How do you counter/remove stealth from an enemy (with Revealed 4s) …using the “Sic ’Em” Ranger skill?

This skill can not be used without a valid targeted enemy, and the effect will end prematurely if the pet’s target becomes invisible.

So, if someone stealths you can’t target them, so you can’t use the “Sic ’Em” skill to remove their stealth. And, if you target them with the skill before they stealth, you have only 4 seconds of Revealed before they can simply stealth again.

I fail to see the usefulness here. Am I missing something?

Using Sic ’Em at the right moment can completely screw up thiefs rotations and get them killed. As it can only be used when you have a target you need to be able to anticipate what your opponent is going to do and use it at the right time.

For example if the thief is on low health he will most likely use shadow refuge to heal and disengage and if you manage to cast sic ’em before that most thieves will panic and get killed.

That’s what I thought initially, but that isn’t the case, it’s the target of the skill that get’s ‘Revealed’.

@Taku
That’s what I assumed, but it seems like an awful “long shot” to achieve for little gain.

Are there any other practical skills or ways to remove stealth in combat?

Well, if that’s the case it’s kinda lame. I mean, a pet should be able to “sniff out” stealthed characters. The owner and/or the pet can’t stealth? wtf the Ranger has one 3s stealth skill and there’s one pet that can stealth but both are practically useless what is the point!?

Sic Em is probably my best skill to use to screw stealthies over, let them spam stealth get them to rather low hp and use that on them – the view of thieves trying to shadow refuge without success never gets old.

It gets applied instantly its a player skill not a pet skill. It does buff the pet and reveals your target. You see the thief start to cast his heal, pop sic ’em and he loses the ability to stealth off it. See the thief drop a combofield, sic ’em and heartseek wont stealth the theif.

My guild will run 5 ranger parties on some nights and we just hunt thieves. 20 seconds of continuous reveal is death for any stealth dependent thief.

The Sic Em reveal is nearly useless in killing a thief. I only have to stay away for 4s which is incredibly easy since most thieves excel at evasion even when visible. Afterwards I can immediately CnD off the pet, NPC, wall, gate, etc when Reveal is finished. That assumes you actually land the thing which has its own problems.

This brings up the biggest problem with pets and thieves… CnD on a pet is so ridiculously easy I don’t even bother tagging a ranger since that can be blocked, dodged, etc. The pet on the other hand is just a free cloaking device.

Two things a Ranger should have to deal with thieves. The first is a knockdown trap. The thief version of this trap is probably the best way to kill a thief I know of. The ranger being a trap master should access to this. The second is a shout that reveals stealthed players on a relatively short timer. It could be Sic Em or something else but a ranger really should be a natural counter to stealth.

Try to use a stealth disruptor trap instead. Hard to put down when you’re alone but it will kill PU mesmers and stealth thieves if they’ve never encountered it before. Was pretty funny to see a thief place black powder and using heart seeker multiple times to try to get into stealth.

I can’t believe no one actually answered this yet.
Sic’em applies a revealed buff on the enemy. It prevents them from going stealth. On ranger I just time my stun right after that revealed from sic’em disappears, that gives me plenty of time to burst the poor thieves down.

Funny that, happens to everyone, eventually.
Sometimes stealth has no visual effect on the screen of the user (typically occurs with shadowstepping) and one could imagine the player attributing the not-changing visual appearance to such a bug.

You can also use it when you see a Mesmer cast veil or mass invisibility to prevent them from turning invisible. It does not work on decoy though, because that would be too OP, or maybe Anet isn’t very good at programming, who knows.

Use Sic’m when the Thief is low on health so they can’t Shadow Refuge. Or, if you’re a zerk Ranger, although very risky to play in WvW and requires you to get the first hit, not the Thief, you can use Sic’m as soon as you spot the Thief and burst them down before they can react. It’s actually very effective if you time it right.
