Crashing in WvW after annoying sound
Retired Until Expansion or Meaningful Content is Released.
Seems to hit a lot of people, me included. I’ve had to just play without sound, because I can’t manage to go very long in WvW before getting hit by it. It’s been reported, and you can follow that thread here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Annoying-Sound-Bug/first

Turn the sound quality all the way down.
Fixed it for me at least.
Just some weird part of the game that doesn’t make sense.

Ok thanks for the replies, will try with sound quality all the way down. If i keep crashing then i guess ill stop playing until it gets fixed i just can’t play without sound

Yeah this seems to be a common issue. I do not know what causes it, but it seems to only happen to me in WvW.
This happened to me a while ago. I turned the sound quality down and the issue hasn’t happened again. I also don’t notice a decrease in sound quality.

I fart in your general direction
I always have to mute the game when this happens. Will have to try playing with sound settings.
You mean that whoo whoo whoo whoo whoo sound? Just happend me today 2 times.
Thx for the tip with sound quality,
This happens when alot of people bash at a gate in wvw. Too many sound effects ..
Turning down the sound quality completely, fixes this.
If you decide to just ignore the woo wooo woo noice, the game crashes after a while.
This is a problem common to all fights where there are large numbers of people. You’ll see it primarily in WvW zergfests, but I’ve also had it occur in PvE with things like Dragon events and Orr Temples.

Its a bug of GW2 with TS and Vent.

It happens to me when fighting Claw of Jormag sometimes in PvE. It’s caused by too many players in one area. It doesn’t happen often unless you’re constantly in large groups of people.

Simple solution. Log out of game. Go into your documents>GW2 folder.
Look for a file called local.dat
Delete it.
Let game reload it.
This file is your UI settings file, but for whatever reason, it grows daily. After a period of time it gets too big and corrupts apparently. If it’s larger than 15mb, that’s your culprit.
Deleting this file has worked for countless people. The only hassle is you’ll have to go back in and readjust your settings after it reloads.
Adjusting the sound settings works for a while, but ultimately the sound bug returns. The only way I know to get rid of it is deleting this file.

So mine being 61MB and coming in at just under 4 million lines of code is probably a problem? :P

lol likely
You sure it’s mb and not kb?
You’re right, it’s your culprit if something is coded badly.
Sound quality fix worked for me. Instead of max, just set it to one below max. Never heard the annoying sound again.
Just wanted to point out something odd I’m seeing on mine .. conflicting info about file size …
The file itself says KB .. but if I right click properties, it says MB. (Both are too big and likely I’ll start getting the sound bug soon, but wanted to post this).

~1000 kb = 1 mb.
So 54,000 kb is about 54 mb, which is exactly what your screen shows. Nothing odd there

Bah, I always was terrible at math, and kb/mb always confused me. (red face)
Luckily my career has me on the writing end. Think I made the right choice eh? Lol.

Yep, I’m sure. 61,658 KB :P
I haven’t had the sound bug since I replaced this file. That being said, I can’t say for certain that this fixed it, only that it hasn’t happened since I did

Oh sure. Mock the math challenged girl
I turn my sound quality to Fastest instead of Highest Quality, musical interval to Shorter instead of Longer, and mixing buffer size to Most Stable. That made it a lot better now. I went from it crashing once a day to once every few weeks.
Turn audio quality setting to “half” and u ll be fine.. =)

This doesn’t work. I’ve had the problem before, deleted local.dat and still have the problem. Happened a few times over the weekend.
Clearly you should stop annoying the sound. ;P
Weirdly enough I did the ‘one below max quality’ thing and never had it again, while iirc my brother did this and it still recurred. I guess the threshold for it might differ depending on your machine?

Although in this case it could just be coincidence, but having said that I just looked and that file is a little over 40mb for me. So if it is, I must be pretty lucky.
“This is a test of your emergency broadcast system” or some kind of weird raid siren. That is what it sounds like to my guild. Even more annoying is that it seems to happen in one speaker rather than stereo. It is often accompanied by the inability to move.
Huh. I’ve never had it stop me from moving. I’ve had the game simply forget to let me move on occasion, but using a movement skill seems to remind it in that case, and it never went along with bugged sound.
Also, is it possible to petition ANET to make that noise into an air raid siren? Because that would be hilarious.

There’s a few folks who have reported back that it doesn’t work for them, and I wonder if it’s a hardware issue for them …. I know this has worked for countless others, who have come back and said they don’t get the bug anymore after doing this.

To be exact, 1kB = 1024 bytes, 1MB = 1024kB.
Computers use powers of two instead of powers of ten. Metric system says kilo is 1000 (10^3). Binary system says kilo is 1024 (2^10). That’s why your 250GB disk is actually 232GB to your system*
*Unless you run OS X 10.4 or newer, which stupidly enough displays disk capacities in base 10.

Anyone know what the problem is? When I go to wvw often in big fights an annoying sound starts and a bit after if i stay in the zerg i crash sometimes, what could this be?
I have 8gb of ram, gtx 570, i2500k cpu, 4 fans and play on max settings. Tx for your response.
That “Annoying sound” is your conscience eating away at you starting with your inner ears. You want my advice? Call her, make things right, and it’ll go away.
Not very often you see “it’ll” used on a forum.
