I was expecting a huge map, maybe like 2 EBGs merged, but actually it’s just as long as the old borderlands map, but now it’s wider like EBG. But the wide area is just to accommodate for that big oasis in the middle, as for the sides are still kinda` small.
People complain about it to be too big, but actually they don’y even know the map. I very often see kitten commanders that lead people all over the place, for instance yesterday a commander went to the bottom of the map to get the the Palace’s gates instead of taking the high cliff and arriving at the north gate in like 30 seconds.
If you think about, let’s take the old BL map, if you come from cragtop and you go into the water, go through the middle ruins, arrive at Lake tower, then go up the bridge and arrive at the south gates of Hills, instead of running directly up the cliff from Garri to Hills, then everyone would complain that even the old BL map is too big.
And also if people play EBG all the time where every objective can be trebbed from one keep to a tower, tower to castle, etc, and blobs run around all over the places using the WP, etc, then yes even the old BL map is huge.
Example: Rampart to Undercroft (30 seconds), Rampart to Palace (30 seconds). You just have to know your way around and take the shortest path. Remember the old borderlands map, people jumped off the cliffs to get from Citadel to Cragtop. No one was waling down the dollyak path.

Please stop listening to people that say the map is too big. They are just spoiled kids that would like the learning of the map to be surgically implemented into their brain without any effort, served on a silver platter. Once you know the shortcuts, all is easy.
I like large and small maps, wouldn’t it be nice to have a REALLY small one that encouraged a different kind of pvp? I think it would be nice to have both but nice rant.

It would be great to have small maps for GvG, but it should be a sPvP mode for larger teams and not WvW.

There is a small map. It’s called Obsidian Sanctum
nice troll, 8/10, almost fell for it
It should be bigger. I was making dinner and left it on auto run and when I came back 7 minutes later, I ended up somewhere at the edge of the map, and overshot past my intended destination. Fix please.
Considering the map size in GW2 I’m really curious what people would say when first seeing TESO RvR map.

Probably something like…. So twice the size does come with twice the lag.

Probably the same thing all the people that quit the game said, it’s too big and hard to find fights. If you do find a fight you either die and have to run a long distance back to find any action or they die and you have to wait for them to (maybe) run back to get some action.
There is a reason RvR failed so hard in that game
Not sure if serious but… I agree. The map is not too big. Its just too convoluted. Too many cliffs, narrow paths, canyons, rock walls.
The keeps are too complex. Too many stairs, too many passageways, too many levels, too many gimmicks like lava, jumping pads, sandstorms.
We asked for a new map. Not a new maze. I think Anet forgot how to spell.

This is my feeling on it too. Im sure once i do it for a while that will go away mostly. But i really cant help but feel that most of the keeps feel like that were made for a face paced first person shooter, then an mmo. Lots of short switch backs, lots of up and down, lots of walls, and lots of little windows to peek through.
The only thing I’m concerned about is that ESO failed mostly because its map was too large and made fighting seem more like a marathon jog than quick combat … meanwhile GW2 thrived.
I’m still a ways off on making a decision about the new maps, but it’s something to keep in mind I guess.

Like Emain in DAOC. This would the best Map Ever!
if you control the keep the map is not that big. Lot of shortcut, we have to learn how to use it. The problem is the game mechanics (no wp, wp at t0, auto free upgrade, no human required, etc).

GW2 still isnt close to ESO (what, about 20x as large as the new border with 600 players per side?). But you are right, it did fail mostly because it was way too large. It wasnt fun.
The very reason I came back to GW2 after ~2-3 months of trying to adapt to ESO was because there, I could play 1 hour where 50 minutes was just running, running and even more running (then rubberbanding back and re-run the same stretch). We’re talking primetime as well. The scaling in ESO was 20+ players or forget about it. You needed a guild waiting for you. In GW2 I could just join a border and enjoy myself 50 minute out of an hour instead.

Yeah but the whole campaign is on the 1 map.
I like the size of the map. I just don’t like the content.
The purpose of the game is to “fight” not the playing “hide and seek”. when ppl complain about the sixe of the map you have not to count only the way to structurse but all the passages and way players can take. It’s intricate and in that way bigger.
The purpose of the game is siege warfare. If it were just fighting why would you need towers, keeps, supplies and siege? You could make it like a spvp map with capture the point, but make it bigger.
Can’t wait for arena net to make huge kitten map where people can bash their heads against each other, get bored with it and then move on to another thing.
WvW is about PPT, make points, defend, scout, flanking, tactics, siege etc.
lol, +1 for this troll post
Not really trolling.
I’m not saying the new desert maps are smaller than the older ones, but they are not that big, only wider. The verticality helps it a bit too, but I was expecting 2x size and maybe improve their engine to support it too which might make EBG less laggy.
It’s a convoluted mess. The keeps make no sense design wise. I’m constantly asking myself why would any civilization build this??? Also, HoT fractured the game in too many ways. Lost track how many times I’ve had the urge and died while trying to glide.
btw… Dev’s, make a map that’s environmentally and visually pleasing next time. Why the heck would anyone want to spend a couple thousand hours in a desert? Why would anyone risk there lives for such a place??? I feel like saying “Go ahead and take, knock yourselves out.” instead of defending. Now the OG keep in EotM, that’s a nice area worth defending.
I honestly mostly agree with OP. The map isn’t really any bigger than the old borderlands map. Travel times are the same if you own objectives along the way, slightly longer otherwise (unless you knock down the walls separating some areas).
A lot of people here are complaining about map complexity, which is very different from map size. OP is only trying to say that the size (and travel times) are basically the same as the old BL.

If you learn shortcuts you realize that it takes mostly 1 minute to get to one keep to a tower and viceversa. You also have to refresh your 40% speed increase from the shrines. When pass over a sentry and it’s yours remember to grab a first aid kit and auto cast skill5 if your build doesn’t have perma swiftness.
I feel old BL is very big on release, and feel its small after 3 years.
