I like the idea of merging PvE and WvW to the extent of designating certain PvE maps (Brisban Wildlands, Lornar Pass, Iron Marches, Orr) as WvW style maps that have hearts and meta events, as well as a competitive element. I’ve heard they tried this with Silverwastes and it didn’t work out too well, and the logistics are scary, but if it succeeded it could be really cool.

At the moment, WvW feels like Player vs Empty Space and PvE feels like Player vs. Map Completion.

I sort of like the idea but I also feel there is a lot of problems with it. Just getting some of the obvious questions out of the way:

  • so, if PvE maps will become part of WvW, how many players will be able to enter same map instance? Lets say there are 3 servers in matchup, it means only people from those servers can be in same map. Anyone in other server gets sent to another instance. So, what happens when you are in party with someone from other server? Guilds that have members from every server (even the ones fighting each other in WvW)?
  • What would be the WvW score based on? Number of kills? Some objective that one server holds and other dont have access to?

Basically, it will mess up megaservers again. I remember doing map completion before megaservers and it was horrible to find people for larger boss events when you were in low population server. Now I would not only need to find enough people to kill some map boss but also fight off players from 2 other servers trying to do the same.

Also, forcing players into open world PvP is never good idea. There is a lot of players who just want pure PvE. Thats the reason WvW maps were removed from world completion, so many players kept complaining about it. Now you saying half the normal PvE maps should be turned into PvP.

WvW needs to be kept separate from PvE – there are too many areas where one would annoy the other. However I wonder how things would be if we could use a couple of different PvE maps as a WvW dedicated instance with hearts replaced by PvP style capture points. It would need some work…

Just off the top of my head:
- Replace hearts with PvP style capture points – three different tiers so a small circle is worth less than a medium is less than a large (like camp tower keep).
- Deployable walls/barricades as part of siege (there would be supply issues to look into)
- There would need to be a WP system to allow players to move easily around the maps (and a way to discourage these being spawn camped – possibly a No Traps zone with a debuff that builds up to cause damage if you linger too close too long – like the frost aura in the fractal with the ice elemental)
- no PvE based mega laser boss event (too cheesey – don’t mind befriending locals to help defend objectives though – at least that makes story sense).

Some of the PvE maps have ruins and other areas that are already partially defensible. I can see that this sort of idea would a) save making new maps, b) provide familiar surroundings and c) give plenty of space (which may or may not be good).
Not sure whether some/all the PvE stuff should stay – you need it to make the maps feel realistic (villagers around North camp Alpine for example) but you don’t want to be battling against PvE exclusively instead of finding players.

Perhaps a more PvE like open map would help attract some PvE players into WvW?
