On my EU account I want to join a good WvW server. The next 5 servers after these are French and German.
Is there any major differences between Far Shiverpeak and Desolation servers? Is there anything I should know before choosing which to join? Which has been a top tier server for the longest? (not that this bit will influence my decision much).

Just wondering what to choose. Thanks.

You keep asking for a “good server” and the “top server” however there is no such thing really in EU like there has been in NA. Karmatration and Far Siegerpeaks have both been high in rankings for a long time, same with Gankdara and Piken Seige. They’re all very much the same, blob around with a commander, completely useless mindless drones without a tag to run around and press 1 with.

If you want to join a karma train fest and never think about what you’re really doing or care about whether you’re really making a difference choose any top 10 host server.

If you want to learn how to think on your own, to defend stuff and make a difference no matter how few people you are, join a bronze server lower than the top 10. Oh wait they killed those servers…

Ha! Its a well known fact that most servers FSP face has more siege in T0 towers than FSP has in T3 garri, lol. Being on FSP I take those kinds of towers daily.

Either way, it really doesnt matter. Deso obviously have way, way higher PPT population at the moment (they’ve lost a couple points to JS, dont think FSP has won a single skirmish?) but that could easily change with new links. FSP can still outman them sometimes. JS pretty much flee as soon as they see anyone, as usual. We have had the same matchup a couple of weeks and I am kittening sick of facing both servers. I honestly dont really like the high tier, T2/T3 prelink was always most enjoyable.

PS: If you love roaming on a thief or mesmer, go join deso. I mean they are pretty much all gankbuilds on thieves and mesmers already, but they could clearly use more, 2 or 3 thieves for every enemy is the optimal amount. Deso roamers can go eat a bag of kittens.

FSP is more organized during prime time and pretty full.
Deso wouldn’t be #1 ranked if it wasn’t linked and if it had less bandwagoners, especially outside prime, so it would drop ranks.

It’s not really organised like it used to be, Desolation doesn’t use TS much, people just do their own thing. Sometimes you have someone open tag, but most of the time they wipe, because of bandwagoners or lack of quality. The community isn’t what it used to be and the pug quality dropped, thanks to the link.

You must refer to me. Let me get this straight:

Desolation had lost tons of players and was EU rank 9 just before the linking system was introduced. We quickly rose to EU rank #1 after getting paired with Vabbi – thanks to having a relatively high number of Points-per-Tick (PpT) players and good overall coverage.

When Desolation lost the server link we dropped to EU rank 10 and believe me or not we were almost non-stop having the outnumbered “buff” on us on 3-4 maps at same time. The only match up where we were not outnumbered all time was vs GH (yes, GH had even lower numbers than Deso).

While we are paired with Vabbi, I am NOT complaining that we have too low numbers compared to enemies. Nowadays we can sometimes even create short queue on 2 different maps at same time. Generally on prime time on one map has queue, so we are still not as full as some might think.

Anyways server linking will change on 6th Jan 2017. I hope Desolation + Vabbi will continue to be linked, because I have grown to like many players on Vabbi and I think these two servers compliment each other. Vabbi hosts also many ex-Deso players, who simply transferred there because of lower transfer cost. If Desolation loses link, we will once again drop like stone.

Reply to the OP: If you enjoy being part of an organized blob using meta builds, I think FSP is your #1 choice. I know many people will claim that Deso quality is low, but honestly I don’t see much difference in quality between FSP or Deso. In the current match up Deso+Vabbi has 1.2 Kills-per-Death (KDR), FSP has 1.0 and JS is 0.7.

I think the main difference is that FSP players are better sticking to the tag aka more organized. Desolation has always had lots of players who just wanna do whatever they want: roam, skirmish, blob, zerg, gvg – and many Desolation players are so stubborn that this will surely drive any PuG commander mad sooner or later. Yet this diversity has proven to give more resilience to Deso. Out of those servers which were in TOP3 in Autumn 2012, Desolation is the ONLY one, which is still in TOP3. Desolation has “died” so many times, yet always came back to top.

Deso has been around the top tier since launch so they’ll have the inevitable baggage that comes with being at the top for so long. And by baggage I mean karma trainers, pvers, people who don’t use ts, people who don’t get on tag.

I don’t use TS (with that commander) or get on tag usually because my server is linked and I’m on TS with 3 or 4 people in my guild threatening the enemy T3 towers and keeps, flipping back the camps we need and doing the vital defending those cretinous zerglings on tag are incapable of doing.

On the rare occaison when we’ve had 8-10 people on we’ve saved many of our keeps simply by being on lord of one of the enemy servers keep making them abandon an attack to zerg us.

Not everyone who isn’t doing what you criticise is baggage. Though this is Karmalation we’re talking about.

Think of a plague of locusts and that’s FSP’s style during prime- massive blob. Oh, and probably a couple of maps queued and a guild group or two as well.

Deso is more of a casuals paradise (or hell?) but have better coverage and more smaller teams that tend to achieve more in points terms than a big mono blob does.

Pretty much every server is a bit burned out by the monotony in wvw and the lack of wvw balance or any sense that wvw might get some dev love before the next decade.

Possibly to deso because for some reason I am always seeing the same guilds on both both servers, like one man standing in FSP spawn while the same guilds five man gank squad is at the spawn camp. Or maybe JS as well, hearing someone swear out loud in french on TS and then suddenly go quiet is fun.

You think I’m talking about havoc squads and roamers. I am not. They are fine. I love them. I’m talking about the people who follow the commander but are not on ts and not on the tag during fights. You know, the headless chickens?
