I have read some posts about that the server cannot handle more AOE etc. But isnt that because the server is using DX9?

Maybe its a good idea to test with DX10,11 because these are made to lower resources on the server side, so it is easier to transfer data ( less data).

I really think DX10,11 is the sollution to stop skill lag and remove the AOE cap in WvW.

If people are still using 2005 hardware well i am sorry, tough luck for them.

Send this idea to your tech team plz.

I am getting another beer, and enjoy the sun!

They originally had planned to to make DX10 available upon release (with the option to use either DX9 or DX10/11). I do know that they had to create a unique game engine (not just license the Unreal Engine 4 or something like that) for the game and they basically ran out of time to include that functionality.
It’s a shame that they apparently don’t have the go ahead from NCSoft to continue work on it. Not only would it improve this game, but they could use the engine to power other NCSoft titles and help the parent company start making money again.

Switching to dx 10/11 would certainly reduce skill lag, but that’s not going to happen. Why use (“waste” – anet perspective) money to improve WvW when you can have living story every 2 weeks?
But it is a good ideea afterall.

Yea i know a DX10,11 implentation requires a full game change, and that will probally cost another 5 years..

But hey, maybe in the future someone smart thinks of something

But really, the problem is in the DX engine + game engine, its just outdated.

DX9 is from 2002…

It was however updated until 2008, which was well into GW2s development cycle.

DX9 is one (but not the only reason) that this game is so laggy. Even WoW updated their engine to DX11 64-bit.

I know I was dismayed during Beta that they were so behind the times. It’s cleared up and the game is still visually pleasing. I just wish that they had the resources at the time to take advantage of the latest technologies.

The game is visual perfect 10/10. But this is not a single player game and they should know that 10/10 graphics brings alot of server load and that Dx9 makes to much data to send server→client.

Its a mistake, and they wont admit it is.

I just wish they would be honest about it and say “Sorry guys, this is what you get” then everyone will be dissapointed for a while but satisfied with the clear anwser.

DirectX version has nothing to do with skill lag at least in anyway that I can see. The graphics API system is entirely client side for rendering and the skill lag is server side trying to process data. I highly doubt their servers have DX on them and may not even be Windows based (I have no idea though).

Besides no AoE cap means some other change to AoE to keep it balanced. AoE already generates more DPS than most other skill types. Imagine what the DPS of an AoE would be if it could hit 100 people rather than 5.

You mean you mean you’d rather had a game that runs fast and smooth, instead of “Cutthroat Politics?” What are you thinking?!?!?!!

“server limited” “engine limited” is all you hear from these guys… Why do you have an engine AND servers from 20th century?

Fact: every Thief tells you to “l2p” when the subject is to nerf stealth.

Lol!

DirectX has little to do skill lag.

To oversimplify what is probably a very complex system, the server processors are choking due to the fact the the skill queues are full. When you push a button on the client, its queued and executed on the server. When the server is capable of handling all these requests, its fluid without lag. When there are too many incoming requests and it cannot process them fast enough, it will result in skill lag.

If you remove the AoE cap, the amount of incoming work for the server in terms of damage calculations would increase exponentially, increasing skill lag.

Arguing that DirectX10/11 would technomagically fix everything is like trying to argue that a new coat of paint on your car will make it go faster.

Yep, would require an engine rewrite from scratch which is not gonna happen. It was poor planning on Anet’s part to take a shortcut by modifying the first guild wars engine but hey they gotta keep the shareholders happy and make sure GW2 released on time.

Well let me explain you something then. And maybe you are one of the Tech working on Anet that cannot find the sollution, but the it is really in here.

Yes the server registers every button press, but with every press there is data on it.. thus graphics, sounds, player controll.

We all already know that sound is the last option in the line to send to the client, and most of us have no problem with it. First priority of the server is to send the action to the client side, but because it has to deal with so many factors ( that Dx9 cannot process) it clunks up and eventually get lost in package transfer (ignored).

That is why we keep on pressing our heal skill. Cause it doesnt send it, due to incompetent behavior of the graphics distrubitable (dx).

So you can lol what u want. But the problem is in here.

I cant even describe how wrong that is so I really wont bother replying in this thread anymore.

You probably shouldn’t. Most know by now the CPU is the bottleneck in this game. Dirext 9 engine is unable to take advantage of multi core processors which is a huge red flag for a MMO game that was released in 2012 as all pc’s these days are all multi core processors.

As a running business, Anet needed to keep the shareholders happy and ensure GW2 released on time. A complete rewrite would have added years in development so they took the shortcut and modified the original Guild Wars engine.
