Let’s do a thought exercise where the launch of HoT is like GW3 instead of an expansion and you are a developer at ANET who has to present their ideas on what the new best ideal for WvW match-ups should become in the face of this being a whole new game with a whole new set of traditions and new more defensively orientated maps (since that is what the new dessert borderland feels like at this point).

How many resets in a week would you propose given the history of WvW in GW2 including everything we’ve learned from EotM? How many hours long is the best amount of time to keep the meaningfulness of the match-up and yet minimize the affects of “night capping” in a world wide 24/7 MMO?

What time (in PDT since that is the time zone ANET uses) should that match reset occur? There is no one single time that is ideal for all players so if you were going to use any metrics from GW2 which ones would you suggest they choose to make this decision?

Yikes! This is not easy, I’ve already gone through 3 reiterations in trying to think things through thoroughly. I am just going to go with the assumption that having one reset time is easier to code for along with the idea that glicko can be managed to handle unequal match lengths somehow and that more than one match up in week would be good for the game mode.

I think I might go with 3 resets in a week of 3 different lengths, 24hrs, 48hrs & 96hrs; the 24hr match up being from Saturday 6pm PDT to Sunday 6pm PDT, Sunday 6pm to Thursday 6pm for the 4 day match up with Thursday to Saturday nite being the 48hr one. Hopefully that variation would allow for the maximum amount of different playstlyles, long and hard pushes or fast and furious and everything in between for all timezones. I also think this would make the hours leading up the end of the matches much more important and blow-outs leading to karma trains less common.

What would you suggest and why?

I fail to see the point of variable shorter matchups. We already got EoTM for rapid reset matches. If you want to mix things up, vary what you play.

One week is still the most sensible choice. Not too long as to tire out players, not too short to make it feel meaningless. The nightcapping issues in WvW has little to do with the length of a matchup, thats all on its inability to scale PPT when there is a low population, causing runaway points when no one can defend.

I’m not convinced that multiple match’es over a week is the solution. But if I where to suggest one, I’d pick 2

Friday+Saturday+Sunday = the traditional weekend/reset.
Monday->Thursday = the week-day warrior and coverage

It would encourage the two main play styles I see "most" people adhere to.

The largest problem is how to make the matches work together for points/ranking, since at this stage things becomes really wonky.

Best day would be Wednesday noon (around 1pm) in my opinion. This will remove a lot of coverage/night capping issues that many servers have, as weekends naturally allow for more game time out of players, rather than forced overtime. Having the weekends being in the middle of the matchup means that there’s more activity spread over the course of a week, with Tuesday nights leading up to Wednesday evenings being low on activity (which is fine, since they’re work days anyway).

The largest problem is how to make the matches work together for points/ranking, since at this stage things becomes really wonky.

Simple! Reset the maps and score and keep the match-up the same. That has the effect of keeping the leaderboard from skewing due to each match being considered unequal to the previous one.

Now that I think about it, some of the sPvP tournaments determine winner by a best of three system. It would be analogous.

I’m not sure how putting reset in the middle of the week changes either of these?

To be honest, any reset time will work, all that will change is whether the BIG PUSH comes in two consecutive days or is split into two parts.

I really don’t want to see reset more than once a week – not all players can play every day, so you’ll probably get some match ups being decided on the results from a game that had low population at odd hours (which is a common complaint on other threads), and then the next one on results from a much bigger player base. At least a weekly reset evens this out.

I think there are three scenarios that could work. Maybe they could be switched up – a month of one, a month of another, etc.

1. Three resets a week. Resets correspond to each of NA Prime, OCX Prime and SEA Prime. (Don’t know if this would work for EU Servers or they’d need different timezones).

  • This would give different people in different timezones a chance to experience reset in their prime time. And maybe get more people in those timezones to play even.

2. Two resets a week. A weekend match and a weekday match. Reset on Friday. Then reset on Sunday.

  • This would be pretty awesome because Sunday would be a great time – battling for the win Sunday afternoon/evening. Then immediately into the next reset.

3. Battle/War Resets. Friday reset is a 24-hour battle. Then Saturday reset is a week long war.

  • This would be awesome too. But might lead to burnout.

For those who don’t think more than one reset in a week is a good idea, what is the ideal time for reset in single week match-up if you were starting over from scratch?

I am not convinced Fridays at 5pm PDT is actually the best time for a reset in a week long match-up but then I am not entirely sold on Saturday evening yet either. I guess we will be testing that for the next little while and a little while in ANET time can end up kinda of long since 5pm PDT on Fridays was originally only supposed to be temporary. When it comes time to revisit that choice it could give us an opportunity for something entirely new if the WvW community could agree on anything for once. You have to admit, we are a very fractured bunch with a lot of different play-styles that must make ANET’s head spin with our lists of contradictory demands.

I tend to agree with Rev that in a week long reset, mid or late week with an earlier start would probably end up with most balanced match-ups competitiveness wise, Wed or Thurs noon to 3pm PDT time frame all sound reasonable to me.

It would be pretty fun to at least have a test season with shorter match-ups just to get a sense what that would be like. Maybe a month long season where the first two weeks have 48hr match-ups and then longer ones for the final & deciding matches.

No thank you, this idea makes no sense while every one knows how long it takes to make keep waypoint or even SM way point, what i would change are two things.

Lets assume reset is still in friday as all this 3 years.

  • In friday, flipping objectives is worth nothing except SM and it gives 3x points. This would stop karma trains and huge night shifts in last day, and made it day to fight for SM.
  • Same with borderlands, all objectives are still capable but only points that you would get are from garrison 3x same kitten fights.
Wish I could get back to GW1.. PvP-GvG. It feels like we are outcasted, not desired or rewarded..
