Q:

Hello dear devs,

Can we get a color blind mode in WWW and more generaly in the entire game ?
For exemple, what I know is wrong today : the team colors. Red/Green are too similar for most of people.

Suggestions :
- blue, white, red
- blue, yellow, red
- etc…

A simple question leads to a simple answer (yes/no)

Thanks
riton

I have a friend who plays this and is almost fully color blind he regularly complains about how hard this game is compared to other games that have implemented a color blind mode (WoW, Rift, or Swtor to name a few). With such lack luster games putting this into play (a number of months after launch) I can only hope A-net pulls their heads out of their kittens and gets to work on this.

Funny thing is that some people that are die-hard in ANET’s favor about everything were claiming (at least a couple) that they implemented these colors for the colorblind.

It isn’t a ‘legit question’.

To me, Red and green are nothing like each other. OTOH shades of blue and green have always been a bit difficult to tell apart. Eyes differ from person to person and being colour-blind isn’t a yes/no matter.

The colours on a CRT or LED screen are a manufactured standard Red, Blue, Green to match the spectral response of a ‘normal’ human eye. That makes the three primaries the most clearly distinguishable colours for most people.

Using a different set to accommodate people with a disability would be like removing all stairs everywhere and replacing them with wheelchair ramps.
If someone has a disability that’s tough but it’s no reason why everyone else should have to share in it.

Green is not a primary color.
Your argument is valid though.

Yes, it is. The human eye has 3 types of colour sensor. red, green and blue. The pure colours of the 3 types of screen colour emitters are designed to match those as closely as possible.

You are probably confusing the common use of primary colours by artist and printers who tend to use the term when discussing pigments. They identify a number of systems including cyan, magenta, yellow. (e.g. Printing inks.).
For those ‘primary’ systems the mechanism is light absorption/reflection rather than pure emission and the spectral result is often quiet complicated instead of being a pure ‘spectral’ colour.

Good to know you are not red/green colorblind. I am. Why are you in this thread again ?

That’s not true I’m afraid. The “blue” receptor is most sensitive to blue/violet, and the “red” receptor is actually most sensitive to green/yellow. In fact, different people have different sensitivities. Colour vision.

The emitters in your monitor have to be colours the human eye is sensitive to, while also providing the largest practical colour space – as it is your eye can perceive colours that your monitor can’t reproduce. RGB colour model.

Since the most common form of colour blindness is red/green, it does seem a bit odd to use red, green and blue and WvW. If they were set to different luminances while mantaining the same hue, everyone should be happy. For the brits, snooker balls are coloured that way so you could tell the colours apart back in the black and white days.

I think the WvW team has a bigger issue on their hands right now.

Instead of adding an ingame option, they just ruined the icon colors for everyone. There are more people with problems to differentiate blue and green, than green/blue and red.

Do you even know how colorblindness works? Of course red and green look different to YOU.

And your analogy doesn’t really work for a number of reasons. Replacing all stairs with wheelchair ramps would come at a cost(other than the cost required to actually implement said ramps), and that cost is physical space. If ramps took up just as much space as stairs and were just as effective in any scenario, stairs would most likely cease to exist for the most part. I know thats impossible, because ramps can’t be used everywhere, such as places that have a steep incline and would thus hinder the average person.

Whereas a simple color change in a game would not hinder the average player whatsoever. Not to mention it could simply be an option to check in the graphics menu. If stairs were replaced with ramps, people wouldn’t have an option to use them or not.

Also, wheelchair accessible entrances are legally required in many public places, so yeah. And as for private businesses or such.. Well then fine, don’t accommodate to people’s needs. Don’t expect to get any business from them.

No one is saying change the system. People with a disability (which is actually extremely common on various levels in men) are asking for a setting they can turn on to better accommodate them in the game they play and enjoy. No one is infringing on your game play please take your hate elsewhere.

On a serious note is this even something the dev’s considered? Simply adding a setting for people who are color blind to better alert them to things they may miss in game, due to not properly seeing colors.
