O this is gold.
But to make a real post on it. You kind of said it yourself it is the smallest part of the structure. You can only hit it from one side which makes it much easier to defend. Walls are first because you can hit them from anywhere virtually while gates you have to get up close.
I think I’d like to see a WvW door skill, something like:
Gate Mastery - Up to 5 players may “operate” the gate
1. Brace the gates! - Use the gate as a siege weapon. Skill1: Channel – gate takes 2500 less damage if it is 5% or less
2. Into the Yett! - When you operate the gate from the outside you are automatically teleported into the other side of the gate.
3. To the Barbicans! - attacks from the other side of the door such as AoEs dont hit you on the inner side of the gate.
4. Through the Murder Holes! - you can use the gate as a siege weapon to make a melee attack Skill 2 OR a range attack skill 3 in front of the gate (as if manning siege). 3 sec. CD
5. Down the Hoarding! - you can use the gate as a siege weapon to make a small aoe in front of the gate that causes damage and stuns for 1 sec. 30 sec. CD
6.. Drop the portcullis! - Channeling, when the gate goes down automatically create a trap that causes aoe damage, immobilize and bleeding and upon trigger creates a 9000 HP temporary gate that obstructs movement (wears off in 1 minute)

Far easier to defend when you force the enemy in a small choke point. No word of a lie, a glass staff Ele can solo defend it fairly easily. Took down a group of 12 or so in a few seconds myself this way. No way I could do it if the walls were being catapulted from afar.
IMO each tier upgrade of a keep/tower should make BOTH walls and doors stronger. They don’t even have to change the in game graphics to make this happen.

The Towers and their upgrades create the challenges that so many of us love in WvW. Reinforced doors vs paper changes the battlefield. Its perfect the way it is.

I like this idea the best. Upgrade one would be in between paper and reinforced. Upgrade 2 would be reinforced. Upgrade 3 would be fortified. The rate at which 4 sup rams can take out a paper or even reinforced gate is ridiculous.

I’d actually love to see a T4 Gate upgrade where the gate becomes electrified/magicfied and has permanent, unstrippable Retaliation. XD
An easy way to sort out the issue is the number of rams is restricted to what structure you’re up against.
Towers. 1 ram if not upgraded, 2 rams if upgraded (indicated by small circle’s on the ground)
Keeps. 2 rams if not upgraded, 3 rams if upgraded.
Garrison and Castle Stonemist. No restrictions
