EU matchups variety
What the hell are you talking about. Arborstone is fighting two servers it hasn’t fought in months and is gaining 60 rating. Yes that is variety and yes they will eventually gain ranking.
EU has way more varierity than NA and people are complaining?
WvW Rank 3800 (Platinum Veteran) – PvP Rank 69 (Shark) – 25,9k Achievment Points
Mërcenaries [Sold] – Ferguson’s Crossing
Deli but Arborstone will never be able to gain enought rating to go really up. For example 2 weeks ago RoF compete succesfully with Pikens and FSR that means if ARB is able to stomp Dl and RoF, they should fight next against higher servers, but thanks to glicko and rating gap, they wont fight them
Next week it will probably be the same, RoF vs DL vs Arb and even if Arb will get enought rating to go to rank 16th, there will still be gap of 100points to GH and problem is with current matchmaking 100points gap is like a wall.
And dont forget if you fight lower ranks, like 16th vs 17th vs 18th if 16th will win he needs to wcompletely stomp other servers to gain enought points to actually gain some rating.
Look Pikens are able to skip 3 ranks only because there are 6 servers inside 100point difference. For Arborstone this is really a big problem, well its a problem to any servers trying to get from bronze.
Because even if you have players, if you are winning a lot, that gap will actually prevent you gaining ranks which will prevent your guilds having gvgs and such(not many in bronze) so nobody will ever want to try to trabsfer to you, because you dont even have a change go up.
For lower rank servers, that not even a problem of coverage, of skill, its just a problem of freaking rating points.
While between rank 1 and rank 15 there is difference of 262 points and that means there are 15 servers splited in 262 points, in next 262 points there are just 4 servers.
See my point? Even if lower servers will get some transfers, it will take months to gain enought rating to actually go up.
BB was able to drop 6 ranks in 1 week. They lost 75 points and that cost them 6 ranks. They have different matchups now. But As need 200 points to actualy gain 3 ranks. To evens tart fighting servers they have strenght for right now. When RoF rank 17th competed against rank 16th and 18th and win, RoF gained 32points. Thats 7 weeks until that server will climb up to compete with others.
You know what I am talking about now?
Jeknar yes EU has more variety, but there are maximum 3 servers sharing same hunder of rating. but in NA if you look on it, if you count difference of 262 points as in EU, you will get maximum of 5 ranks. Thats 15 vs 5 ranks.
And in NA there is no 200 gap between servers.
What I want Anet is to look on this. Anet is killing lower tier EU servers just by this 200 points gap. Because we have no chance going up. Thanks to glicko.
You forgot that variation is a two sided thing. If you just increase variation, they may as likely roll down extremely as they may roll up.
The only way to climb is gaining rating by winning, and so far they not even passed RoF nor Drakkar, so they may gain rating by winning against you, they get more, if they win more decisive.
So, if you wan a get rid of them: Loose more decisive.
Its not only about arborstone.
Last fight against FSR we beat them, not much a difference but we did. Rak 14th pikens won, rank 16th RoF was second, rank 11th FSR was third.
So we beat 5 ranks higher servers and you know how many ranks RoF gained?
And thanks to that Gap we have no change fighting FSR again.
That gap was always there, sometimes a bit smaller, like one a 6 months, somethimes much bigger. This gap effectively prevents low silver/high bronze to actually gain ranks. Even if its possible we would beat FSR again. They are fighting GH now and they are even so we might even win against GH, but we have no chance at least to try it.
Same applies for any server that will be rank 16th or lower.
Even BB lost last week against FSR, so RoF might be even able to beat BB, Arborstone is definitelly able to beat BB. But without a chance to try.
Anet please look on this. Look on servers performace in last 5 matchups. Look how they are gaining ranks or loosing ranks. look how they did.
That was RoF’s last week opponent probability: (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Matchup-wishlist/4149841)

An increase in variance means that more extreme matches become possible/more likely. (And as a consequence closer matches become less likely.)
You already have a chance from Gandara till Fort Ranik, with increased variance like before season 1, you would have a chance of SFR till UW. And believe me do you don’t want to fight SFR or UW, not even Vabbi or Gandara.
Concerning the gap: It was build by glicko because it was adequate, it will disappear/reduce when it is not adequate.
Maybe the adaptation rate of Glicko is to konservative, but increasing variance is like increasing the caliber of a mortar shooting on a flying sparrow. It doesn’t increase your chance of a hit, but it ensures an increase in collateral damage.

What Anet needs to do is to fudge the numbers occasionally.
What Anet needs to do is not have leagues that cause 9-10 weeks of ratings isolation.
