So everyone always wants to have 24/7 coverage for their server in wvw in the higher tiers, right? Well, here’s an easy solution for you.

Mix EU/NA and ZH (if possible) servers.

Now you may have some concerns with latency issues. Simple solution to this, transition the server over time so that during EU prime time, the wvw servers are using an EU server as the host, during NA time, it uses an NA server, and if we can somehow fit ZH servers into the mix, have a ZH server active during ZH prime time.

Thoughts? I think it’d be a good place to start. If any devs have input they’d like to place as to why this wouldn’t be possible, that’d also be great, such as why EU and NA have to be separated and can’t be combined in this manner.

I think China has politics of not being open. Every game that have China servers are blocked of any outside interaction, so that’s clearly not possible.

Now about mixing NA/EU, the latency issue will continue with your proposed change. Let’s say Ruins of Surmia become guest for Jade Quarry. In your idea JQ is host, so they use NA servers for that, which means players from RoS will be experiencing the latency change. And if it happen the otherway around such as Eredon Terrace becoming guest for Desolation. Players from Eredon Terrace will experience the lag due Desolation server being in EU.

This is a technological innability and I’m not sure if there is any way around that. Mind you that I play from South America, so for me that make no difference (I have high latency on both EU and NA with EU being slightly worse).

Not that I am opposed to these sort of things, but I think its just impossible to do now this late in the game. It would have to be designed for this from the ground up, hardware, networking, then software, everything.

I played Eve Online for quite a while and that game has only 2 servers, the main server which I was on has players from all over the world simoultaneously, and the lag is perfectly managable. I live in California so I am like the furthest away from the server, yet its perfectly playable.

So for stuff of this nature, I think A-Net is just way better off doing it in their next game, rather then this one.

We’ve been asking for it since launch and have always been told it is impossible given how ANET decided to set up their servers so I have to agree with Tongku, the next 24/7 RvR / WvW / MSPvP game has to take this approach but no sense in crying over a past poorly made choice. I just don’t think ANET will ever be trying large scale combat in any of their future games given those who were fans of it have left the company and how much trouble WvW has been for them.

It is also very unfortunate that internet infrastructure is so poorly managed in the US. Most other developed countries get way more for less out of their connections and if the US stepped up we might be able to find a more central location that could offer more equitable speed connections across the globe. Gamers (along with streamers) just need to get together as a voting block to make some changes happen that would be good for the entertainment industry as a whole.

I didn’t know anything other then money and force was counted as votes. But yes most of the US internet infrastructure is behind the times so to speak.

Not possible (as is). They have told us before that this can’t work, the way they work they have 2 different data-centers, and to change from one to another would be the same as a transfer. So this solution would disconnect everyone every 8 hours (example, if using 3 different time centers), to transfer the entire data-center over to the next one.

Unlike just a transfer, this would likely need to include a complete data-dump to get all the players that has player and done things the last 8 hours etc, and would likely take more time than the few minutes to transfer single account.


The only way to change this (that I can see) would be to either: Make 1 data-center for entire world, so who gets the lag? or: Completely redesign the server/data structure, which likely will be about as much work as building a new game engine.
