Elementalist or Ranger?
Staff Ele has more 1200 range ground targeted AoEs, that’s a big advantage in siege situations. You can put them on the walls when attacking to hit siege equipment and defenders out of sight, or under the door from the inside when defending.
The Ranger can trait for ground targeted traps at 900 range, but can’t have that and a longbow spec at the same time. Longbow at 1500 range is argueably the best spec to stay in the back of a zerg and finish off downed opponents and you’ll have plenty of time to pick up the loot.
The real secret to farming bags is being in a decent group 100% of the time though.
So in the end, which gets more loots?
When not grouped I’d say LB Ranger, You actually need to kill opponents to get bags, just tagging them isn’t enough. Being grouped makes much more of a difference than class though.

Are you certain about this? Because I can drop into a zerg, throw on Dagger Storm, run out, and come back once it’s clear and pick up 5-20 bags depending on how many people I hit.
A ranger will do more AOE damage but an ele just plain has more AOE and will tag more, doing less damage.

The ranger does nothing that the elementalist does not do better.
For AOEing groups, CCing groups, small scale and large scale battles, killing siege up on towers, mobility, and even 1v1 combat the elementalist is superior to the ranger in most every way. Even a melee elementalist is better at AOEing zergs than a ranger.
It sounds crazy but is true.
don’t blame the messenger please, blame Anet. (yes i have both at 80)
Haha, the one question I am qualified to answer!
Ranger for sure, Meteor Shower is very inconsistent. Ive dropped it on entire zergs and had it only hit 1 target since it selects its 5 targets at cast and if they move out of the circle it will hit nobody even if there are people still standing in the circle.
Base shortbow attack will hit a target 3 times standing on a wall edge before they react, couple this with the longbow AoE which never seems to miss anyone in the circle even with more than 5 players there and you have a badge farming machine especially if you take Quickening Zephyr.

I’m not talking about delivering the killing blow, the target needs to die rather than be just downed though. Not sure what the deal with Dagger Storm is, I don’t play a Thief.

I’m not really sure that is the case – in my experience meteor shower isn’t like usual AoE spells as every meteor can “connect” with target – you don’t even get a red circle when it is used against you. I must admit I haven’t counted when casting but I’m pretty sure I have hit more then 5 people with my meteor shower – it could have been same 5 people though…

Ele has more AOEs than just the meteor shower, and can basically drop a new AOE non stop. The ranger’s AOE is on a pretty long cool down, so most of the time you’ll just be doing single target damage.
However….. As a person who doesn’t group often, I get more loot as a ranger because I can drop single targets myself and I get loot that way. As a staff Ele, I do far more damage against zergs, and likely tag many more enemy players, but I don’t do enough damage on each player to get much loot.
So if loot is all you care about, you need to decide if you play mostly solo or mostly grouped. If you group, go Ele, if you solo go ranger.
When are people going to figure out there’s a war going on?
Im someone who played Ranger for the first 2 months then switched to Ele and for me ele is so much better in large groups staff is amazing, i had 8k kills in 2months and got 3k kills in a week of being an ele.
For solo/small scale D/D bunker build is way better than ranger and also alot of kitten fun so its the spec i use 90% of the time now. D/D you can 1v1/2/3/4/5 get a kill or 2 and get away something you cant even dream of doing on a ranger.
I still want to play ranger but i dont think anet will ever fix them, they were underpowered all the way thru gw1 and i have the feeling gw2 will be the same
O and persoanlly i think barrage is actually better than meteor shower in many ways as the hits are more consistant and the cd are similar but the staff has other smaller aoes that have a much shorted CD as well which make it so much better than LB

Personally, I believe that if you know how to play each class, then you’ll find that all it comes down to is personal style and opinion. While I have only played ranger and not elementalist, I can go into a zerg with one of my guild mates who is an ele, and we’ll be getting quite a bit of loot no matter the conditions of the battle. Each has their own play style, find the one that’s right for you and enjoy the game.

Personally i think rangers lack dAmage and defence unless he is specced for conditions, and they get removed all the time.
And i thought you needed to do 10% damage to get loot, not sure about this tho

Seriously, is everyone forgetting rangers can have pierced arrows?
