Explain Pips and Rewards like I'm an idiot
Join Darkhaven at http://www.darkhaven.us
1. You have to get to participation level #3 then you’ll earn pips. When you fill the pip bar, you get a chest (and rewards)
2. They are tallied on the skirmish timer
1. Kill stuff and cap stuff.
2. Watch 5 minute timer go to 0. No pip notice above minimap? Repeat step 1.
3. You get chests containing stuff some of the ticks. Pick whatever.
Pips are the points you get that move your progress bar for the chests you get on the right side of the screen. The more pips you get, the faster you get chest rewards from the reward track = the faster you get the chests and tickets.
You can only go up to diamond once a week and get tickets… after that it just repeats with no ticket rewards… but you still get the chests from the pips you get per skirmish tick. Approx every 5 mins.
- When you do stuff in WvW (events, kills, wall repairs etc.) you earn participation. You can track your participation in the bar above the mini-map.
- Participation comes in 6 levels.
- At each tick, i.e. every 5 minutes, you gain participation points :
- The amount depends on your participation level. You can also use some boosters.
- Participation points fill your reward track, you can check in the WvW UI : the chest icon.
- You can get loot from the reward track, the nature of which is determined by the reward track you chose.
- At each tick, i.e. every 5 minutes, and providing your participation level is at least 3, you get pips :
- The amount of pips is determined by your server rank, your personal rank, and various bonuses (loyalty, commanding and outmanned)
- A given amount of pips earns you chests. Wood, bronze, silver, gold, etc. each new kind of chest requires more pips to unlock.
- Chests provide determined loot, amongst which claim tickets.
- The countdown atop your screen tells you when the next tick will occur.
- The countdown on your participation bar tells you :
- If it’s green or yellow : the time remaining before your participation starts to decay
- If it’s red : your participation decays, and the countdown tells you when it’ll reach zero.
I hope I haven’t forgotten anything. Feel free to ask if you need more information.
I’ve been away for 2 years. In the past I’d always been more of a defensive player in WvW. I enjoyed building up the defenses on a tower, keeping an eye on the nearby guards and camps, chasing off roamers who came into my area, etc. What I’ve seen over the past week is 0 roamers trying to cap camps or guards – only zergs would attempt it after they took a nearby keep. And nobody trying to kill yaks at all except for the day that was one of the dailies.
So I’d sit in my keep for a little while, but there’s nothing to repair so my Participation Level would be crap. And building defensive siege doesn’t count for anything, so there’s no points for that. Eventually I’d get bored and go join a mini-zerg to capture a tower and get my PL up, at which point the other team would naturally cap my now undefended tower, trashing all of the siege I just built.
It all seemed like a pointless exercise. Nobody even seems to care about defending objectives anymore. And I couldn’t help but feel like a big part of it was b/c you didn’t get any rewards for it. Am I missing something?

Some commanders will share squad participation with those that defend certain strategic objectives. What happens is if the commander’s group caps a camp, the scout gets participation; if they slay a zerg, participation. Usually you will have to ask for it.
1) The rewards – the ones that consist of Skermish chests and claim tickets – how do I get those? Do I have to fill up the Pip bar?
There are 7 skirmish reward tracks. For each track, you need to fill 4 or more pip lines.
See the WvW interface, second tab, for the pip line you are working on at that moment. Once you fill all the pip lines in a track, you move to the next track. Once you finish the seventh track you can repeat it, but will not get skirmish tickets for doing so.2) If not, how? Are Pips tallied up every X minutes? Is there a clock for that somewhere?
There is a timer at the top of your UI while you are in WvW. It counts down from 4 minutes 40 seconds (or thereabouts). Once it hits zero, there is a short delay where the timer just shows – - – then the timer resets to 4:40 or so and if you are Tier 3 or higher in participation, you gain pips. You build participation by doing stuff in WvW. Killing players, guards, Dolyaks, and completing events (e.g. capturing stuff mostly) add to your participation. To see your current participation, click the circle on the upper right of the minimap. If it says shows you as Tier 3 or higher you gain pips when the timer resets.
3) Is there anything else I should know, which I clearly don’t?
Participation tier decays if you stop doing things. There are two different timers on the participation bar. When the one that’s there while the bar is gold (yellow, amber?) counts down to zero, your participation starts to decay. The decay timer (there when the bar is red) shows the amount of time left before your participation is gone. Whatever color the bar is, doing anything (kills, captures, events, see above) in WvW will reset the bar from red to yellow and adds time based on what you did. If the bar is yellow, then doing something may not add time. If what you did would add 2 minutes, but you are on 7 minutes, you keep the 7, the timer does not go to 9.
I play in WvW regularly and have earned 6 claim tickets since this new system rolled out. I can only figure that I must be leaving before I earn the rewards, and that I just keep missing them.
Thanks for your help.
If you are playing but not getting pips, then do the following:
- Be aware of your participation level. Do stuff until you get to level 3.
- Once participation is up, keep doing stuff for as long as you want to play WvW. If you keep participation at 3 or higher (it goes to 6) pips will take care of themselves, and you will get a pop up bouncy chest just above the mini-map each time a pip line maxes out.
- When you want to quit, you can continue to gain pips for 2 or more timer cycles if you remain in WvW. I usually do inventory management at the spawn point, to take advantage of the time left on the participation timer.
If you are doing stuff in Edge of the Mists, these things don’t add participation, nor can you gain pips there. Finally, the skirmish track resets once a week at the weekly WvW reset, so a partial line (unfinished) will be lost.
Some commanders will share squad participation with those that defend certain strategic objectives. What happens is if the commander’s group caps a camp, the scout gets participation; if they slay a zerg, participation. Usually you will have to ask for it.
Thanks for the tip.
Last night I ended up building a treb at Anz Pass and attacking the castle for a while. That kept my progress bar filled nicely. I even used it a few times to run off small groups that tried to attack my tower, but it didn’t seem like I was getting any credit for defending the tower. The event timer would expire and just disappear, no participation medal or anything. I suppose since I generally didn’t hit anyone that the game didn’t count me as helping. But just the threat of getting hit by the treb was more than enough to scare them off.
I did manage to get 2 kills with it from guys trying to attack the nearby guard tho. LOL
Thanks to those who took the time to share all this information. And, I’m sorry for the late response – my city (Houston, TX) got leveled by a hurricane and I’ve been dealing with my own problems and helping people with theirs as much as I can.
So, I do things to raise my participate. If I’ve participated enough, I get pips in my bar every 5 minutes. I get a chest with Claim Tickets in it when I fill my bar. Yes?
And, none of this has anything to do with WvW Reward Tracks, right? – like, when I pick the Bloodstone Fen reward track, for example. Right?

The reward track at the skirmish reward track run in a concurrent fashion. Tier 1-6 provide progressively more progress towards the WvW reward tracks (i.e. Triumphant armor or dungeon tracks). The higher the tier, the more progress.
The skirmish reward track needs at LEAST tier 3 to give you Pips, and as long as you stay above tier 3, you get a number of pips regardless of how much higher your tier is. A higher tier protects you more from a period of being AFK, like to go to the bathroom lol.
Hi friends. I am trying to understand the system of Pips and Reward chests so I can earn Claim Tickets. I Just don’t get it… I need to have it explained to me like I’m a 5 year old idiot. I’d be grateful if someone could talk down to me like I’m an imbecile, and go into extraordinary elaborate detail so my small brain can handle it.
First though, yes, I press B, view the second tab, see my pips, see which reward I’m on – like reward 2 of 4 – and I know that I earn Pips through my participation, and that that participation is different from Reward Track participation. I get all that. But…

As REQUESTED, 5 year old explanation:
-REWARDS AND PIPS are the same thing. You start GETTING PIPS after you get a certain number of REWARDS.
-You get them by attacking and defending the coloured objectives on the MAP. Those circles are either blue/green red. You get MORE by attacking though.
-YOU lose rewards/pips by NOT attacking/defending frequently. YOu Will seee red stuff in the BAR just above your minimap when this HAPPENS. RED IS BAD.
