Q:

Both Engineers and Thieves, through use of ground-targeted relocation abilities (Rifle 5 for engies and SB 5 for thieves) are capable of entering the green Eternal Battlegrounds outer keep, bypassing any gates and walls. I have verified at least one location that it works for, and I would not be surprised to find others.

I am reluctant to use this tactic, because it seems as though it would be an exploit, but if it is considered a viable strategy then I would like to use it. After searching, I’ve been unable to find an official Arenanet answer; does anyone know of one? Or could an arenanet employee respond to this?

A:

Exploit. Each time one of these crops up, where someone can jump over the walls of a tower or keep, Arenanet fixes the map so it doesn’t work anymore.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

What’s so funny about it is: why does the exploit exist?

Thieves teleport is very special even though multiple classes also have teleports. Unlike the others, their teleports go through clear through objects and terrain, while for example Mesmer teleport will only cross level ground (if even that, a grass straw can stop you).

Why? Why doesnt Thieves mechanics work the same as the other classes? Or why doesnt the other classes have the same mechanics? Its the same basic skill – teleport. It teleports you. But its not the same.

My only conclusion is that someone at Anet deliberatly made Thief teleport like this and thus, these “exploits” are actually by ANet design.

If someone can give another explanation, please, go ahead.

A much simpler explanation is that Anet made a mistake in the map and that it is an exploit.

Thief teleport used on the big supply camp archways will bring him on top of the archway (when teleporting into the underside of the walkway).

Mesmer teleport used on the big supply camp archways will bring him smack into the side of the wall at ground level.

Which of these mechanics is wide open for exploits, hm?
No really I am actually serious. I would honestly like to know why the same basic teleport mechanic is so different. ANet coded it this way, made this distinct difference.

I wish what you are saying were true – unfortunately, I stopped counting the times that my Shadowsteps got me stuck on … tiny rocks, or sometimes even nothing worth writing home about. I assure you, Thief teleports (shadowsteps, actually) don’t go through objects – if such a thing happens, that is because there is a “valid” (whatever the game considers “valid” here …) path from the Thief to the target spot.

… More on topic: exploit. Walls and doors are there to be broken down, not teleported past (in this game). Report it as per above.

Don’t bother reading this.

It’s a portal bug that happens with any TP ability by any class. It’s happened to me on my Guardian. It’s been acknowledged and a fix promised. Endof.

Right – carry on.

Except it isn’t a teleport. The engineer ability is very specifically NOT a teleport, and is treated by the game as a targeted jump, much like the Lightning Tether in the current Living Story content. Any class that can move to a ground-targeted location can do it; it doesn’t require teleport so much as extended but accurate jumping range.

Except it’s not a teleport bug, it’s an exploit. There are no bugs whatsoever involved, it simply abuses the geography of the map to jump on a ledge that is normally considered out of jumping distance. No teleportation needed.

You’re ridiculous, you just need to be told that.

Here’s an obvious thing you overlooked. Thief and Mesmer were codded at different times, possibly by different people. If you compare any of the classes, look at the skills of similar fashion, you can see all kinds of coding differences. Mesmers in particular have many different coding nuances in this way.

We could go with your alternative interpretation though. Thieves are designed to be some sort of demi-god OP class who don’t play by the same rules as everybody else. I hear A-net don’t ban any thief who uses fly/speed hacking just because those hacks play into the general design intended for thieves by the devs….
