Fields are just red rings
Put on full nomad, run -condi food and bunker down and you will never fear red rings again. You will be an immortal god. 20 arrows just hit you? Just shrug it off.
My ele is healing- and support-oriented with p/v/t armor and healing sigils/runes, i slam my face against static field all the time, just because I can’t see it, i can’t see the electical cage. So, maybe I think it’s just a necro well or an ele chill field and instead I get stunned out of the blue.
My necro is power- and well-oriented with p/prec/tough armor and It’s like I’m the ball in a ping-pong match all the time. Plus I can’t always be able to see/understand/percieve where rapid shot come from.
However, the point is not how long condies last or the CC out of the blue, the problem is I can’t distinguish what I have in front of me and react properly. I just see red rings.

Immortal god with the power of a wet noodle.
I think the OP’s point is more than just put on armor to deal with it. it is a graphical thing about notifications. I’ll go even a step further that it is really breaking the game with this about of ground or aoe target effects and damage.
DaOC ran into this problem when their healers, more specifically Midgards Pac healers, could AOE cc/stun an entire party. Pair of pac healers, pair of suppression spiritmasters = dead zerg. CC was just too much. Current stat of this game with red circles of crap on the ground and AOE reminds me exactly of that problem.
Format really needs to be look at or removed. Romper room isn’t going to keep people engaged.

Range has to range. Melee has to melee. Someone has to melee…

portal bombs, veils, but if melee groups is small, since damage is easy to make, zerg will clean the melee groups w/o much of a problem, the actual changes are making even the “unbalanced” numbers even more important than gameplay and tactics.
I have been in situation like the one in the example where i put myself aside the figh and notice no one on both side were killing just a empty space where woe is being throwed in hope of a miracle to melt any overextended players, i even noticed guardian with GS at range and changed to staff when some players decided to flank that group, wich was a ~2 second fight due massive aoe spike, it is not pretty to watch nor play :S .
At least DH will work at range…. >_>

As Crapgame said, if I can simply (graphically) SEE a static field, I’ll just don’t step into it, but since those AoEs are pretty much identical I cannot say what I have before me. Same for ele earth #4, guard staff #5, mesmer focus #4 = necro utility wall… they are just red thingie on the ground.
All these AoEs requires different reactions: distinguishing a CC field from a condie field is essential.
CC field of any sort = Or you have stability and ok or you are dead
Condi field of any sort = you can decide to eat the dmg or not
However that’s not always possible even with full graphic settings on high.
I wish the red rings were MUCH more vibrant and perhaps slightly thicker to distinguish them on the field.. A know quite a few just by the circle size but still it’s difficult to tell what it actually is most of the time.
In fact ANet should re-do all the skill graphical effects to make it more visually distinguishable; easier to react. I know that’s a massive ask, but look at HoT with all it’s fancy new skills, even on the rev some skills had a specific animation with graphical effects you could at least see properly.
