Flax Fibres
+1
The main source of Flax Fibers are the 2 farm locations in PvE maps. Farm locations are in Verdant Brink and Tangled Depth. These are places where players park their alt characters to login, gather and logout every day. How fun and engaging gameplay is that?
The main target of Flax Fibers is the WvW upgrades. All WvW guilds’ scribes are constantly asking for more Flax Fibers to keep the guild’s warchest filled.
I refuse to go to PvE and farm, and the syntheziers in WvW don’t provide Flax Fibers. So I have to buy them from the Trading Post. It is a gold transfer from WvW players to PvE farmers.
I want WvW to be a self-sufficent game mode. Flax Fibers are a main offender.
Suggestion: Let the siegemasters sell the upgrades for Badges of Honor.

‘wvw should be a self-sufficient game mode’ sounds nice but falls on its face.
wvw and pvp have memories of battle and shards of glory for a reason. that cross-mode dependency helps to keep each mode profitable.
are flax fibers a fair pve→wvw dependency? maybe, maybe not- but that dependency should exist to some degree

letting the siegemasters sell flax fibers is better, keeps the fibers market-facing

Why jump the extra loops to buy Flax Fibers with Badges of Honor, craft Flax Fibers into Linen Supply Sacks, craft Linen Supply Sacks into Bags of Energy, craft Bags of Energy into Schematics, put Schematics into Assembly Device?

While they’re at it, they can look at freshwater pearl prices and maguuma lilies…

Memories of Battle and Shards of Glory are not needed for PvE. They are for crafting legendary weapons only. You get the same stats from ascended gear. I don’t play PvE, but I am pretty sure PvE is fully self-sufficient when it comes to acquiring ascended gear.
Upgrades (Flax Fibers) are used in WvW as part of the daily warfare. They are more that just some cosmetic touch.

I posted this a few months back- and I still think it would be a good idea:
WvW players need a War Supply Track that replaces the Boxes 5, 15, 25, 35 & 40 from the Hero Weapon track with Greater Boxes of War supplies (2 Supply Sacks, 1 random T6 fine mat, one Exotic backpack, 20 Badges of Honour + 2 Clovers for the final box)
This would give WvW players the Linen supply sacks straight away, bx bypassing the Flax Fibers now bought by WvW players and effectively lowering the price for decorations and guild upgrades
Still keeps a volume of Kurzick poems ;)
Need stuff for WvW?
Stuff cost a lot of gold?
Simply buy more gems and convert to gold!

because it’s more interesting & holistic.
if you just put the objects that Flax Fiber is required to create on the vendor directly, you immediately tank the prices of not just Flax Fiber but all the other items required to create your wvw upgrades.
it gives casuals a reason to care about badges of honor because they can spend their badges on flax fibers.

i’ve acknowledged that in the part of my message you’ve pruned, and you haven’t directly countered the point that these materials link the economies across the three distinct game modes
ignore the scale for a moment, ignore HOW IMPORTANT it is; is it important to HAVE those links between the three game modes?

To me the extra loops are just that. I wouldn’t mind so much if crafting was even remotely interesting – it’s just labour.
For the economic links… There are no items PvE players need from WvW to do their daily business. The money flow is from WvW to PvE only.
I don’t see the importance. Why do you feel it is absolutely necessary for WvW players to feed gold to PvE farmers? How would PvE players feel if they had to buy consumables, repair kits or such from WvW players?

You’re making the rather false assumption that PvE players spend all their time harvesting flax and enjoying it. Most PvE players might harvest a node when it is right on or next to the path they’re taking to get somewhere.
If WvW players harvested the nodes in WvW whenever they flip or defend an objective you might find you get as much as any regular PvE player. I know flax farm spots exist however there’s very little preventing WvW players parking their alts there and harvesting it before popping into WvW or cycling through them after WvW.
Don’t get me wrong flax fibres should drop more in general and the same could be said about maguuma lillies and freshwater pearls. Adding a node that gives a fibre to all towers would help solve some imbalances and adding a maguuma node to all keeps that drops a T6 gemstone from HoT would also help.
I am still bitter that our small guild had every guild upgrade and lost them all. For all I care the guild system can burn to the ground.
Sorry about the Fiber thing though.

+1 Flax fibers in recipes are overdone. 1 subcomponent 12 Fibers. 2nd subcomponent another 12 Fibers. Someone wasn’t paying attention when they designed the recipes.
Have not ever seen this kind of mistake in other crafting recipes. Maybe they were rushing to get things done for the expansion and QA didn’t get a chance to look this over. But a year later and still not fixed?

Originally the flax fibers were not a problem, the resonating slivers were. When they changed scribing and resonating slivers the price of flax went up like 10 times (from a bit more than 1 silver to 10 silver)
But I agree that the WvW reward tracks should have more WvW oriented rewards. And I agree that having Flax fibers in EVERY WvW tactic/upgrade is bad, especiall in such high number. Not to mention that because of the flax numbers the low level upgrades like hardened gates cost 50% more than upgrades like emergency WP.
As a scribe I wouldn’t mind even having WvW reward tracks for some specific decoration elements.
After all the raids/fractals have specific decorations (Those trophies from raids, solid stuff fragments, and holo norns from fractals) (A scale model of SM castle ? Or flat model of WvW – maybe even map reflecting the current BL state ?)

The pain only lasts so long, then you reach the stage where you can laugh about it, I reached that stage a long time ago.
Another idea..
Perhaps ANet could consider a guild flax fibre node, exclusive to guild halls as an upgrade item?
Just trying to think of some solutions.

That idea is more likely to turn into a sold node from the cash shop, get your permanent home instance flax node only 1500 gems.
I wouldn’t want to see it gated behind the guild hall.
I think this just reiterates the fact that HoT killed small guilds for WvW.
We could buff synthesizers. But that makes too much sense.
Of course, we had people QQ’d that dirty PvErs were coming in and gathering them— the result is that they have to end up buying the fibers from said pve’rs.
Maybe the things should get buffs based on participation level, but that has its own problems.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
“dirty PvErs”. Lol that sent me into a laughing fit for some reason.
WvW reward tracks with WvW-oriented rewards don’t encourage more pve players to come to WvW and work toward things they need. Right now, I’m in there for fossilized insects. Other times I’m in there for mats I need for legendaries. I’m sneezing on all the flax fibers I have because I’ll farm it. Anyone who can’t be bothered to go out and acquire flax fibers for themselves can pay me for mine.
Possible solutions would be to increase the drop rate of flax fibers from the harvesting nodes in wvw. Or replace flax fibers with another material that is easier to farm but increase the amount required to balance it out.
Honesty is not insulting, stupidity is.

How about we save raw materials into the guild treasury and then we can simply use any upgrade that can be derived from those materials?

Material Promotions are all done through forging, as far as I know, not crafting. It could be done in bulk.
For example a recipe could look like this:
250 flax
1 pile of crystalline dust
5 philosopher stones
1 bottle of elonian wine
could create 10-40 flax fibers

To inflate WvW population and give vets free bags. By definition, as soon as a PvE player joins a WvW map, they are no longer a PvE player. PUG/casual WvW doesn’t matter as it adds to the ANet metrics.
And there is a small benefit that some PvE players may actually enjoy it enough to come back after grinding.
Play the way you want unless you aren’t playing (or paying) everywhere. You can always straight up buy that Legendary from the TP. And you can buy using real money converted to gems and then converted to gold.

As opposed to how we make siege? The issue is not about making the acquisition of flax fibers more fun or less boring. There are many important recipes that require flax fibers, but no reliable method for farming them as they are basically an rng drop.

Blueprints are bought by BoHs and PoHs – no crafting, no PvE, no Trading Post, no gathering, no sPvP, no daily farming. Just play WvW. I like this design.
If Flax Fibers are used for non-WvW stuff, then making Flax Fibers easily available through WvW is not a good idea. Better would be remove the Flax Fiber cost from the WvW upgrades. Otherwise you create another inter-game-mode dependency and the non-WvW players are unhappy.

I made that suggestion as well, in an earlier post. Removing flax fibers as a requirement and replacing it with a more reliably farmed material but increasing the amount required to balance it out.
Basing material costs and requirements off of what we get in WvW alone does not seem like a practical alternative. It would be extremely limited, and devalue the contributions from players in small guilds or PvX guilds, and players that are more casual. Whether we like pve or not, it offers more options, hence why the material requirements are mixed. Some of them come from wvw, some from pve.

Small guilds and casuals can support WvW efforts the best by playing WvW. PvX guilds have chosen a mixed identity and should live with that decision.
As for more options… If your team is losing the matchup, running to play PvE cannot be an option to recover. PvE is megaservers and there is no way to fight your enemies there.

- I would like to see WvW upgrades used more.
- There’s a reason they aren’t being made more available.
- Who knows what’s going on in John Smith’s head?
- I’d like to know his reasoning behind inaction on flax and whether it is wilful or not.
Anet, please look at this situation. I’m sure it would not take a lot of effort to fix. It’s killing the upgrade system and giving advantage in a PTW way.
Look at supply and demand, (and I can guarantee you that demand is underestimated), as most people probably just look at the price and decide “nope”.
This is NOT an elite material to build anything that people can sell and profit from, it’s a basic need for the WvW community to support their guilds and servers.
while i agree that it should be more accessible to wvwers considering what the main usage is for at the same time i would say if you are flat out refusing to do a tiny bit of pve to get them in the meantime you are bringing pain on yourself
It’s a fair point you make Goatjugsoup, however WvW is the mode I like to play and I have limited playtime. Last thing I want to have to do on top of dailies, pact supplies and running 2 WvW guilds is saunter over to PVE and farm for flax fibres. I’d be happy to buy them in stacks if they would not send the guilds broke.
I refuse to go to PvE and farm,
If parking chars at the Verdant Brink flax farm and spending less than a minute per character farming it once a day is too much for you…pity. If 50% of the WvW population was doing this the price of fibers(and seeds) would easily drop.
Also another thing is….don’t just upgrade structures haphazardly.

I detest PvE. Farming/gathering/crafting/doing-the-same-scripted-event-for-the-hundredth-time-with-same-tactic-copied-from-someone-else-with-maybe-even-a-tool-to-help-with-timings is not my idea of a fun game.
The PvE developers sell you this kind of content by slapping the best rewards on it. For example Flax Fibers or infusion slots. If the rewards got removed then they’d be forced to create interesting, engaging, fun PvE content instead – everybody wins, right?
My guild is small. We have exactly one person who plays PvE. I can assure you I am not upgrading haphazardly.
