Has anybody considered that not allowing players to damage gates and walls might reduce the zergs in WvW?

At the moment having a big zerg (80+ players) has a huge reward in damaging the gates of a tower/keep.
It would be very nice if the gates and walls would not be able to be attacked by a player and only with siege:

  • doors: ram, catapult, ballista, trebuchet, golem
  • walls: catapult, trebuchet, mortar, golem
  • professions that can create mortars and/or golems can attack the wall/door depending on the above rules

The walls and doors should however be able to be target but should not be able to be attacked to avoid disabling the waypoints. The waypoint should be contested when the keep/castle is attacked with the correct siege weapon (basically when a door/wall is damaged).

Any thoughts on this?

I cant see how this would reduce the zerging. zergers zerg to jump on a KT, to take advantage of strenth in numbers, and to hide their participation (or lack thereof) in a mass of bodies. not being able to damage doors wouldnt really prevent any of that.

Need 9 to build 3 ram
Take 9 ppl without running to build 3 ram
3 ram hit 3x harder as one ram and get door down 3x faster
Zerg will be still be there.
With Zerg you take objective faster and easier than a small group and get the same reward.
That why people zerg. Your idea won’t stop that.

It is a good idea the problem is that if they removed so you can only attack a gate with siege you would get even bigger zergs or even blobs. Simply because the amount of supplies that would be needed would require more numbers in form of players. Since as it is now you can put down a ram and use waterfields and blasts to be able to survive and therefore take down a tower with a smaller amount of people

Also zerging will always exist in this game due to the simple fact that all ppl in that zerg get max rewards.

60 ppl taking a tower should get 1/60 of the reward to reflect upon their 1/60 effort put in. That would end zerging. Would also be funny to see the crying if a change like that was ever made…which it won’t btw.

actually i agree on the whole pvd thing as a 60 man zerg can down the gate almost without siege. also the consitant thief gate tagging is annoying and should be removed.

walls have to be made safer for defenders so the enemy actually needs siege to getthe ac’s down. pulls are ok, but ele dragontough and meteorshower is ridiculous. also necros marks reache too far in and their autoattacks completely ignore los and can even hit though walls. same with behind the gate theenemy should not be able to spam 1 on staff guardian or insta kill people that go near it to repair. all these things are in favor of masszergs.
make defending possible for outnumbered servers. allow us to actually put siege up. make the zergs work harder and not just pvd and mass aoe the walls

Anet should increase the HP of gates significantly and at the same time increase the damage that siege does to gates as well. This way siege takes gates down at relatively the same speed as now but zerg melee DPS on the gates becomes mostly insignificant.

The key here is that you still do damage to the gates when you tag the gate, thus you still get credit for the capture event.

I agree with OP that it should be changed. How it’s now just favors zergs, you never see small groups trying to destroy gate without siege, it’s always that 50+ zerg.

fire spells work best on gates because they are wooden. it already makes sense. i’m pretty sure i’ve seen burning damage ticks on gates from fire spells, although its still very low damage and the gate doesn’t show it has burning condition or anything.

Nope, I’m constantly using the #3 Staff skill in Fire Attunement (can’t think of its name), and it does its little damage and it never applies the Burning to the doors/gates. Wish it would, since its the only condition that makes sense against it.

Can’t crit hit or apply conditions to structures or siege afaik; they’re considered environmental.
