Gear In WvW

Get the weapons first, Jewelry next, and then armor as you are able. It makes a difference. Not a giant difference, but noticeable, especially the weapons and jewelry.
It makes a pretty significant difference as you get into the more skilled parts of the game. Since the removal of stats from traits, ascended gear has gotten a pretty big buff over exotic, so the difference is at around 15% now rather than the previous 10%. If you’re 1v1ing a full ascended with full exotic with the same class at equal skill level, you’ll notice the difference pretty quickly. Granted, this game isn’t balanced around 1v1s, but the point still stands.

Ascended armor and weaponry is completely irrelevant. It’s incredibly expensive fluff. You will be better off carrying 2-3 more sets depending on the current situation and types of foes you meet.
It’s all about skill and what class/build meet which other class/build. No amount of ascended will make you better equipped to meet a perplexity mesmer putting 15 confusion stacks on you and no amount of ascended will make a zerg build challenge a roaming build in a 1v1.
Even if we assumed the exact same classes fighting with the exact same build and gear stats, a single dodge or stun at the right time more than make up for any exotic/ascended difference.
Ascended trinkets on the other hand is so easy and cheap to get there’s no point not carrying them (I have a banktab full of stuff, as well as 9 characters all carrying ascended trinkets… several sets of them).
Trinkets>weapons>armor. Armor makes little discernable difference for how much you spend. Trinkets and weapons are worth what you spend on them.
The best reason to take armor over the other ascended trinket or weapons is the ability to change up the stats using the mystic forge with relative ease so as to try out different sets and combinations of the same.
As in not enough vitality , than change up one or two pieces of armor to Valkyrie from zerker. This is better then having exotic sets you are always storing or salavaging as you tweak your build.
It also very nice if you decide you tire of a certain type of build and want to change up. If going from a power build to a condition build it a little easier to switch up two weapons than it is 6 pieces of armor that are exotic. If you find you do not like it than you can switch back using the forge.
