that requires skill, which a lot of the current ghost thief dont have (thats why they played ghost thief)

I kind of agree on this change but I don’t really agree on how anet is approaching balance in general: If they are to finally balance this game they need to unravel a whole lot of powercreep and also traps might become useless if they ever come around to really balance stuff – this was just another easy way out.

Yeah, hard to fix stealth stacking so they took a blunt force approach and hit a number of other builds in the process.
I like how they added a 1-second delay to thief traps and not to ranger or DH traps. I doubt this means thief traps will do significant damage now either to compensate.

Why should they give delay to DH and ranger traps? They are working as intended while this ghost thing is not working as intended.
The delay has nothing to do with the fix. The fix, heavy handed as it is, was to add a strike component to reveal the thief. The delay is separate and seems completely unrelated to ghost thief or any other recognizable balance goal.

It took them only 16 days from the time that was posted on Reddit to finally do something about ghost thief, when WvW players have been complaining about it for months.
My observations: at least 1 player here had suggested many weeks ago that damage be added to thief traps so the thief will be revealed when the trap is triggered. It’s been suggested multiple times before the most recent balance update.
Months of complaints about ghost thief in WvW: nothing done about it.
Show you can solo a raid boss with it: Oh Lord Almighty! We can’t have that! Nerf it ASAP!

No, you only get to fight a large potato in the mordremoth final story instance.
reason why i didnt even bother to finish HoT :], still there are some decent thieves, rare but there are some, i think… sometimes its hard to know in this game due how gmmicks work.

Because Traps in general are not a problem with the other classes. It WAS a problem with Thief traps and Thief traps only due to other Thief profession mechanics. Conflating issues out of spite will get you no where.
A – the problem wasn’t the traps themselves, it was being able to apply damaging conditions, and lots of them, without ever being revealed.
B – Other builds can still do that, so the root problem wasn’t fixed, but this was the build that abused this by far, so most of the problem is just hidden now.
C – This still doesn’t change my point that traps aren’t at all trap-like
I thought ghost thief was part of the game/build diversity. Them tagging keeps cloaked was the issue .
But…. i have just bougth 250 stealth traps…

I’ve always been disappointed with this. Most of the traps are just AoE that you drop at your feet and in the case of Thief and Dragonhunter you teleport to people and just vomit the damage. The lack of arming time or preparation to traps makes them, well, not traps.
I was surprised to see Anet actually add an arming time to Thief traps at least. I’d happily have to to deal with arming times on my Ranger and DH if Anet choose to actually pursue this further.
An arming/preparation time makes traps pretty useless against players. Trap ranger is already crap for quite a while. And now the same will apply to trap thief too i guess. Their traps are single hit and were already easy to dodge if the thief doesn’t port onto you mid-cast. With the delay it might be impossible to land them on halfways decent players. Adding the dmg was a good change, but nerfing them further was not neccessary.

They did nerf it because someone posted footage of using the build to solo a raid boss not because the community posted 1000 vids of it over and over again on youtube in action in WvW.

QFT. At least 2 yrs ppl been asking for nerfs. Like condi Mesmer in some ways. And HoT made them both even stronger(I don’t complain though, I like tough fights unless I’m trying to get across the map). Though over 3/4 of the condi Teefs are/have been horribad at the game. There’s more good condi Chronos lately it seems. IMO it’s because it’s been the PvP meta for a while now and it’s an easy build to be good at.

Arm time on ranger traps is .5 seconds. The area said trap covers is considerably larger than is the thief trap.
The trigger radius on both Ranger and DH traps is much greater meaning the thief variant will trigger much less frequently. Ranger and DH traps also persist after trigger whereas a Thief trap is gone. It much easier to catch multiple people in a ranger/dh trap than a thief trap.
DH has no arm time on traps at all.
I fail to understand why a 1 second arm time warranted. I assure you that if a DH dropped traps at my feet and I had a FULL second to get out of that area the effectiveness of the same would plummet.

Given the glacial rate at which Anet makes changes it was probably something that had been thinking about for months.

Funny thing is though that this can still be done. You just can only use caltrops instead of caltrops+traps, takes a little longer but when the kill already takes over 2 hours what is 2 more?
