Gift of Battle Feedback [merged]
No I think the point was that legendaries shouldn’t be something given away like candy. If you want it, you need to master both game modes. It makes getting one extra valuable because you put in the work, whether it’s in pve that wvwers hate but follow the rules, or in wvw, that pve players flatly refuse to do.
You’re not seeing the dichotomy?
The bottom line is you have a choice. Put in the work and get the shiny, or just don’t get one. It really doesn’t have that much impact on your game play by not having one.
You’ve obviously missed the point then..
I’ve done two old Legendaries, the “oldschool farm” way (farm dungeons for Gifts, farm WvW to get Badges/WvW rank to get Gift of Battle, farmed WvW and PvE events for Karma to get Obsidian Shards, farm world bosses to get rares to salvage for Ectos etc, not to mention all the Wood/Ore runs done to make Gift of Wood/Metal).
I’ve already done my work in WvW to get the Gifts of Battle, I’ve earned them. The only thing is that now ArenaNet have taken away my ability to buy them. To me, this doesn’t feel too far from doing World Completion for the Gift of Exploration only to have those taken away from me because I didn’t convert them to a Gift of Mastery before a certain patch. Sure, if I had “stocked up” on them I could’ve been sitting on 15-20 of them in bank atm, incase I decide to do future legendaries.. I just never thought I would have to. I’m sure most people will agree it’s stupid to spend currency on items I “might use sometime in the future” rather than keeping the currency as is, incase something more interesting is added that I prefer buying for it.
The old Legendaries could (and still can) be bought for gold straight off the TP.. That includes Gold bought with Gems that in turn are bought with Real Life Money. They have never “required” effort, and they still don’t, but people have chosen to put effort into them instead of real life money/farmed gold.
The only Legendaries that actually require effort are the 4 new ones, and they require a LOT of effort. Each of the new ones I’ve crafted have taken me 2-3 weeks doing collections, specific events, crafting time-gated materials, gathering map currencies in both Dry Top, Silverwastes and the new zones, maxing out ALL Maguuma Masteries (apart from the Raid ones) and the Legendary Tyria Mastery.. The 8-9 hours added by the WvW reward Track is hardly a gamebreaker, it’s a bloody drop in the ocean timewise, but it’s a kick in the face to anyone that actually earned their Gifts of Battle already, and as such people feel miffed. It’s only natural.
TLDR; Legendaries are still “given away like candy”, this change only affects the people that have already chosen to put in effort instead of just straight off buying them.. How is this fair? I should be punished with extra farm for chosing to farm rather than buy my Legendary?
If a person already mastered both game modes, doesn’t your entire argument fall flat?
(edited by Najten.2418)
If you’re going to nullify hours upon hours of work to become eligible to purchase Gifts of Battle and obtain enough badges to purchase them, the least you could do is not make it another grind of hours upon hours of work to get one. Better yet, you could not require people to go into your woefully unpleasant pvp mode for… well, any reason, really. Running around aimlessly with a gaggle of idiots from your server until your gaggle of idiots gets annihilated by a larger gaggle of idiots is not fun. At the very least, let us run faster so we can get the running over with more quickly.
As a casual player currently working on a precursor collection who could have bought the gift with badges before this change but didn’t, I have to say that I’m okay with having to obtain it via a reward track instead.
I do think ANet should have issued a reminder announcement about this after the poll where the community voted for reward tracks to leave beta, but I don’t think they should reinstate the vendor because they didn’t do so.
This is also one of the easiest crafting components to acquire from the legendary journey. I thought this topic was more related to earning the gift from badges/vendor (now removed) versus the amount of work required to obtain via the reward track.
You’ve always had to do WvW to get the component of the legendary, and anet never changed that aspect. Why are so many posting insinuating that ‘we will come and do the least possible’
Because some of us already put in the hours required to get it. Now those hours are worthless.
If all you gripping wvw’er played half as much as you say you do….you would have the GoB by now.
We already do? Atleast I do, can’t speak for everyone else.

The real question to the people who said they saved up on badges.
Why didn’t you just buy the gift when you had 500 badges if you dont even need them for anything else?

Yep. That was like the most beautiful q.e.d possible in this situation I guess.
Still, its a bad situation for everybody, even the people that are here being so very polite people that dont show any schadenfreue ever… Or may be a bit weird when they are, on one hand dismissing our argument “Why does Anet insist on forcing content on the [PvE] community that we clearly dont want?” here in such a mature fashion but bringing the same argument (Its a quote. They just wrote about the wvw community, not the pve) in other comments..
Why I havent bought mine? Because I still need 9 levels and I DONT LIKE PVP. That includes wvw. So basically I have putt off the plan of leveling up for when I have every single other component of the legendary except this.. (And also was leveling up indirectly via purchasing wvw-educational supplies which help leveling up without having to set foot into wvw)
I dont really know how leveling up in wvw works, whether you get xp for having points and where you get xp from anyways.. Wanted to look whether I could use tome sto level um my global wvw level.. But that wasnt really important because I still need enough t6 for might n magic and I still need 146 silver doubloons which I farm JPs for atm.
So over the time this woulda slowly increase my wvw levels n stuff and if that hadnt i just would try to kill the animal enemies there (warg or something? ) and look at vistas n stuff. Doing pve basically. But this decision just took any motivation towards the game out of me tbh. So, eh. I dont have any other options anyway so I just try to get through with as little risk and effort possible.

Just to be clear….
So you logged on played some WvW (the best game mode) and just by simply playing as you normally would…you received passive rewards and the GoB? and it didnt cost you 500 badges??
Then why the KITTEN KITTEN are you complaining?
You have your GoB, plus all the other rewards on the track, your 500 badges in front and the change to the acquisition of the GoB CLEARLY wasn’t that big a deal!!
ITS NOT THAT BIG A DEAL PEOPLE!!! Move on with your lives. And stop harassing the dev’s with these ridiculous complaints….so they actually have time to deal with real issues.
And for the record I think the rest of my post was pretty dam good.
Also anyone loose their car??

Her wall teleport funkiness. That I know from actually doing fractals and paying attention to my game mode
Keyword: your game mode. The people negatively affected by this are people who don’t play WvW (you know, most of the playerbase) either due to disinterest or having long ago abandoned it for irredeemable dumpster fire it is. So logically they would not pay much attention to a patchnote section they don’t think affects them as they’re not psychic and can’t be reasonably expected to find the one bit that affects them in the wall of bad decisions that is a Guild Wars 2 patch Note update.

Not anet’s problem if people dont read patchnotes in any length, including the massive quarterly updates.
I also managed to miss this change. I do read the notes always very carefully except the WvW section which I just skim through since I’ve never played WvW and was not planning to do so.
I wish it had been informed in some other form too or indeed under Legendary/general changes section in the notes.
I’m not a WvW player by any means, but I might just try some, just to see how long it does take to get one.

It’s absolutely Anet’s problem. Having bunch of kittened off players is 100% Anet’s problem. Whether or not people should read all the patch notes, it’s unreasonable to think most people do, and even a guy like me (who didn’t have the badges anyway so it wouldn’t have mattered) didn’t remember, or I’d have reminded my guild.
It’s not a stealth change, but it feels like a stealth change and in this business, appearance counts for a lot.
The majority of players probably don’t even know where to find the patch notes, and nor should they imo.
In response to the OP’s commend that badges are useless, they added a lot of vendor items that use badges for more than wvw items including bags, skins, and food.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Outfitter
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Permanent_Portable_Provisioner
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Skritt_Trader
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Badge_of_Tribute
So they are far from useless and are actually a pretty decent way to make/save money, even if you’re just working through a back stock of them.
Simply terrible communication on ANET’s part for something that affects so many players. There should have been much more of a warning than 2 lines of text buried in that huge set of patch notes.

Have never seen them post on WvW forum. I think she/he’s all yours
I’m not a WvW player by any means, but I might just try some, just to see how long it does take to get one.
I’m hearing it takes about 8-8.5 hours of just afk standing around based on getting the lowest points per tick. If you actually just follow a group and actively participate, you can 4x that amount which would drastically cut your time down.
Regardless of the notice, if you’re making a legendary, spending a few hours in WvW (compared to say map completion) isn’t a big burden at all. Think of all the WvW players that have to play much longer PvE content.
Hey man we WvWers have to do kitten ton of pve to craft legendaries so I don’t why is there a problem for you to do WvW. We WvWers find pve boring af too but we still have to do it. Also gift of battle is literally 2% of the legendary so if you can’t do 2% WvW then you don’t deserve it.
Why not make it easier for WvW people instead? Add a reward track that awards 1/6th gift of exploration. Doing it 6 times would be pretty much same time as 100% world but you could do it in WvW, doing what you like. Also a lot of PvE players hate map exploration for nth time, it’s boring as hell, especially renown hearts.
that is a great idea

As I (and probably a lot of others) have said before, it takes 8,5 hours with MAX participation/points per tick (195/5mins = 2340/hour, track takes 20k so 20.000/2340=8,54 hours)
Sure WvW playes have to do PvE content to get a legendary but they don’t destroy the PvE mode while doing so + they can do it whenever they want. Forcefully putting PvE players in WvW just makes them waste supplies/kill a sentry to keep participation up and will make your zergs smaller. WvW isn’t worth playing during the morning/early afternoon either since no one’s around so when will they afk to get their gift of battle? Right, during the prime hours.. :p
If WvW players must participate in PvE to be able to play their game mode; and they do have to PvE to be able to WvW, then why is it anathema for PvE players to have to spend 8 hours in WvW to accomplish something “Legendary”?
Apparently it is so burdensome on PvE players to have to go into WvW that they are sabotaging their own server in protest. What kind of kittenstorm would be kicked up if WvW players went into HoT-land and caused meta after meta to fail?
WvW players have been dealing with far worse than this since the game launched.
Everything in this game is given out too easily. I believe they said years ago the legendaries were meant to be long term goals. They were too easy to get then and they are too easy to get today, just a little longer with a few requirement changes. I propose they add some spvp reward track requirements to the legendary crafting so you can show off your mastery of all game modes not just 1.

If you want to show off sPvP mastery then get the Ascension. Adding additional requirements to legendaries that people already have won’t make them show off anything, as you have no way of knowing if they were crafted before or after the changes. Besides, the old legendaries can be bought, which makes such ideas even more redundant. If you want a legendary that shows mastery of every single game mode, just ask for a new one.
We need new rewards and new content in this game, not adding more work for rewards that have been available for years. Anet needs to stop reworking old content and focus on new content instead.
Feels like this change will show increased numbers of people “playing” www in company reports, without adding actual reasons to play www. This change does not improve game mode imo, so i do not understand why it was made
I’d humbly suggest that stockpiling Potions of WvW Rewards (obtained from WvW dailies) is a time-efficient way of obtaining the Gift of Battle.
Consuming 80 reward potions will finish a track, which allows you to obtain a gift of battle and some other loot. You can get 80 potions through daily achievements in WvW over 20-40 days, and that small amount of WvW activity will get you extra reward track progress too (so it is achievable in less calendar time).

It still requires them to be in WvW.

1) You call WvW the best game mode; I disagree. There’s a reason I spend 95%+ of my time in PvE rather than in WvW, I find PvE vastly superior. What you think is up to you but don’t for a second believe that’s how everyone feels.
2) If I was playing as I normally would, I would have been barely halfway to my Gift of Battle by now. I join a couple of guildies and do some dailies in there, most days but not all (all depending on if I feel like WvW or not). This gives me ~1000 points progress/day, making the GoB take ~3 weeks to obtain.
3) I have saved up Badges of Honor that I have obtained both from WvW and PvE for one simple reason; to be able to buy Gift of Battle when I needed it. Not having “spent them” does not in any way make me feel better.
4) I am complaining because I had to spend 8.5 hours straight doing a game mode I don’t like in larger doses than 15-20 minutes, when I was expecting to join WvW, talk to a vendor and buy my Gift of Battle in one minute, with the funds I had already set aside for it. Would WvW:ers be happy if LS1, LS2 and HoT zones were added to World Completion all of a sudden? I think not.
5) The other rewards I received, in 8.5 hours, ammount to the same passive rewards I’d get for doing the Dragon’s Stand event ONE time. That would take me ~1.5 hours, and be something I actually enjoy doing. Ofc, I also got some Molten Slivers, Molten Fragments, Molten Shards, a Molten Core and a Molten Lodestone… None of which I actually need for crafting anything I’m interested in but I guess I can always sell the Molten Lodestone for the 90 silver it usually sells for… Yay, I’m almost rich!
6) We’re not harassing the devs with ridiculous complaints, we’re letting them know we are extremely unsatisfied with the lack of information prior to this change. A one sentence long sidenote “hidden” under WvW beta info, that most PvE players are going to skim past since it “doesn’t concern them or their preferred game mode”, is NOT ok. They’ve made the same mistakes in the past with lack of communication and they seem to have learned nothing, which kittenes us off even more.
Now go pour salt in someone else’s wounds.
Instead of fighting with each other, let’s propose a fix to this change:
1. Re add the vendor for 1 week so people can make use of the Badges for one last chance.
Why? I think Anet communication with this wasn’t clear and noticeable enough, doing this would ensure everyone is happy with a last chance.
2. WvW reward track vs PvP is REALLY slow, WvW should be buffed to PvP level.
Someone made calculations early, I’m okay with the participation stuff and time ticks, but make it go up to 500 EXP per tick so that’s on par with PvP level of progress. You can go +100, +200, +350, +500 progress scaling with participation. Right now WvW track progresses TOO slow and requires to waste a LOT of time doing something you may not find enjoyable.
Those are my 2 cents and I bet a 100% that’s a change everyone would like.

Oh I got an in-game mail, I just felt since I don’t play WvW frequently and therefore don’t give two tosses about any beta changes to some Reward Track I hadn’t really tried out in that game mode anyway, it wasn’t my place to vote on it.. Guess I was wrong. :’)

Very true.
My main argument is still that this should’ve been better advertised in the first place, and since it wasn’t there should be a grace period where the vendor is returned for a limited time (just like with Karma Boosters cough cough)..
Just to add my 2 cents worth, I never play WvW except when I need a gift of battle as its utter garbage as far as I can tell. Now I am trying to build a couple of legendaries and have just come up against the GoB requirement. I am not very happy as I have to play that crap to be able to get my legs, ANet are a bunch of kittens for doing this. Why force us to play a game mode that is an utter pile of kitten simply because they feel not enough people play it?

Yes= Because I DONT PLAy WVW… The only time I did wvw was 2 times with guild members. SO I think I am level 5 or something?
So, yes, of course I didnt get it because I care atm more for my cats litter box than for this modus. So Why would I play it? Therefore where would I get the level from that are requirements to get information about dirt that seems to pertain me now all of a sudden
The real question to the people who said they saved up on badges.
Why didn’t you just buy the gift when you had 500 badges if you dont even need them for anything else?
Easy answer. Few PvE players posting here knew they had another value. They were a one use item, for many years, with a natural expectation that significant time would pass before we would need another one. Most of us simply considered them the currency they are and always expected to spend them in the future. That’s all they were. To assume we would buy a bunch at once and then store them doesn’t make sense. Why would we take up additional storage space like that while storing all the components for a legendary?
Did the Gift of Battle have another use before the change that eliminated the vendor?
Dear me. This thread makes me appreciate WvWers. Some of the comments are just unbelievable, coming from adults.
You think the WvW players are being any more mature than the PvE players? You must have been reading a different thread. The WvW players were the ones spouting off such gems as
“I had to suffer so its only right that you have to suffer too”
not the PvE players
No I think the point was that legendaries shouldn’t be something given away like candy. If you want it, you need to master both game modes. It makes getting one extra valuable because you put in the work, whether it’s in pve that wvwers hate but follow the rules, or in wvw, that pve players flatly refuse to do.
You’re not seeing the dichotomy?
The bottom line is you have a choice. Put in the work and get the shiny, or just don’t get one. It really doesn’t have that much impact on your game play by not having one.
I agree that Legendaries should require effort to craft yourself, I don’t think I ever said otherwise. But this change was the wrong way to go about doing that. For one, why does ANet expect me to be content with having to put in an extra 7+ hours of WvW specific play for each legendary I want to craft compared to the people who crafted them before this change and could buy all of their GoB? Why am I expected to be content with being required to do extra for the same reward? Why does ANet think that the people who were saving up their badges instead of buying GoB right away to save inventory space (because with all the bags and junk we get inventory space is a premium for most players, a lot can’t justify wasting a space to hold a GoB indefinitely while they gather the rest of the materials to craft the legendary) will be content with their work now being negated? They put in the work at the time to earn a GoB. They did and you can’t deny that. So why was it taken away from them?
Yes. Crafting legendaries should require you to participate in all game modes and it should not be easy. But this was a particularly poor way to force that to happen
I take back all previous arguments about people sabotaging.
We had a few people qqing about it in mapchat.
I ended up picking up 3 other people, we stood around, chatted for a bit, did a bit of roaming, followed the commander, afk’d for like 20 mins and then repeated.
was fun.
They are now very casual wvw players and new guildies.
GG to everyone thinking they’ll just be able to AFK the reward track in WvW. You’ll only be giving Anet a reason to reduce the inactivity timer, which they probably should do come to think of it.
And it’d be hilarious if they actually did. Afk for one tick = booted from WvW and no points for participation.
Yeah, none of these Pve’rs are smart enough to use all your supply everywhere building worthless seige. That’s not an issue is it. Even if that seige wont defend when there’s no supply to repair.
The fact that we’re even discussing the pontentiality of PvE’rs trying to ruin WvW over this just goes to show how petty the complaint is. How can they expect Anet to take the matter seriously if all they’re going to do is throw a tantrum and ruin things for others if they don’t get their way?
Why does Anet require WvWers to go into pve and complete content/grind pve for theirs?
WvW isn’t a punishment. It’s actually quite fun if you spend more than an hour in it. It’s teamwork and strategy unlike any dungeon you’ll crawl. My best guess is this is Anets way of trying to get people to try all content.
Prior to this game I hated hated hated anything pvp. But I never really truly tried it. Dipped my toe in, got jumped, and went yep, it’s just what everyone else says it is. Gankfest. But I just had an opinion, without truly testing it for myself, based on 10 minutes of play and what everyone else says about pvp.
Anet forcing the OCD in me to get map completion forced me to hang out in WvW for a couple of days while I got my POIs. Couple that with a welcoming map commander who helped me to get them, then I felt obliged to stick around and pitch in for the team.
But WvW is different. You have a whole map as your team. It’s not you alone (unless you want it to be you alone).
Now I cannot think of any game mode I love more — simply because other players are unpredictable; it keeps the game fresh, and forces you to think. And there’s something utterly gratifying when you stake your first enemy after faceplanting (learning) so many times before. It leads to wanting to learn/hone your class further and then eventually handle 2v1s with little to no effort. And that invests you into your character further.

Good guess, but it doesn’t excuse Anet suddenly making old rewards harder to obtain, which conveniently extends the legendary process during a content drought. If they want more people in WvW, they should make it more rewarding in terms of gold gain, while also giving it new exclusive rewards. I’m simply not a fan of making people work harder for already existing content just to create playtime out of nothing.

Speaking from experience here as someone who primarily PvEs and knows PvErs. This only leads to afk behaviour for hours on end and with the current server linking that means just more queue spots filled with ppl doing kitten all to help the match up. Ridiculous, horrible change that won’t make anyone actually actively play wvw the way ppl might hope.

The AFKing is mostly a result of a flawed participation system. Reward track progress really should be awarded immediately whenever you contribute. The current system is not only exploitable to keep your ticks going, but it also has two other problems. For one, it encourages even dedicated players to remain AFK when they are done playing, in order to get a few more ticks in until their participation runs out. It is also anti-casual, because a player who is in for 4 consecutive hours will get more reward track progress than someone who plays the same amount in 8 30 minute sessions.
Finally, I noticed that exotic daily chests only give 1 WvW reward potion. Why is this? The PvP versions give 2 potions in the exotic daily chests, while they are usually quicker to complete. WvW players should be getting 2 WvW reward potions per exotic transcendent chest.

They’ve given it multiple new rewards over the last few months, including Triumphant Armor, a return of Hero’s Weapons and a second round at the one-time tracks. They’ve increased the amount of gold you get by not only implementing the reward tracks, but by increasing the amount of gold you get each rank-up.
They’ve already done both of the things that you suggest. They are not making this change in an attempt to alleviate the content drought; they’re making this change because the Gift of Battle’s prior implementation did not do its job. The motives of them making this change now have no basis in making older content harder to complete, but because the feature was brought out of beta.

The GoB may not have been doing it’s job, but countless players have gotten their legendaries without playing the intended amount of WvW now, so I see the change as pointless. If Anet wants legendaries that truly show mastery of every game mode, they need new ones that nobody has ever obtained in an easier way.

Well I’m happy that at least we still have a flawed participation system because the alternative is much more horrible. Honestly, I don’t want to wvw for my legendary and if that means just killing a sentry or w/e every 5min during primetime on EB keeping a slot away from someone who actually wants to wvw then so be it. At least they get inflated participation numbers which is nice for their stats.

Whether you see the change as pointless doesn’t matter. This is like saying you’ve already driven over a broken road so you don’t see any point in fixing the road.
You saying they should unchange it is like saying they should re-break the road because…?
