Gift of Battle Feedback [merged]
I accidentally got one the other day. I don’t get it? Whats the big deal? PvE nerds (I swear i mean nerds in a good way) super spoiled ? Don’t like doing part of the game you hate to excel at another? Bababababalance
I agree that they are much easier to get now THAN WHEN WE EARNED THEN BEFORE and they removed the vendor so we cant buy the Gift of Battle WITH THE CURRENCY WE ALREADY EARNED.
Nothing to do with balance or playing WvW when it’s a change that simply prevents us from using the rewards we earned.
No thanks to putting the Gift of Battle behind a whole bunch of masteries that I do not want to complete and are not WvW related. It would be different if they were locked behind WvW related masteries. But Fractals aren’t WvW. Jumping Puzzles aren’t WvW. The open world bosses aren’t WvW.
If you don’t like WvW and can’t stomach it long enough to get the Gift of Battle, then you can still get a legendary. You just have to buy one off of the trading post.
Gift of Battle is to show that you have played WvW. Open World PvE is not WvW.
Your last sentence is not correct. The Gift of Battle is now to show that you have played WvW, earned the rewards you sought, lost those rewards when Anet hid the language on Legendary Weapon components in WvW patch notes, even though there was a Legendary section, and now you have to do it all again.
That is what it accurately shows. What I said is correct.
Whether or not ANet handled the switch properly or not is entirely separate issue than one being discussed in this thread. FYI: I don’t think they handled it right and should have had the vendor still sell Gifts of Battle for BoH for at least 4 more weeks.
Yes, it may eventually be correct. The reason this thread is here though is to eliminate the need for playing WvW to get the Gift of Battle. That is partly desired because of how this was poorly communicated. I think we should be required to play some WvW for one Legendary component. If I want more, I will play WvW more.
They should temporarily replace the vendor and eliminate part of what is driving this threads discussion.
There is no eventually about it. It is currently correct. It was put in place to get players to play WvW to get the Gift of Battle if they want to make a legendary.
To me, the OP reads as if they just believe that WvW should be part of legendary creation since most of the creation of it is PvE related.
And no amount of better communication will change that. They could have put it in big flashing letters on top of loading screens starting one month prior to the change and made a forum thread to discuss it and it would not have changed the reason behind the change. They could have also not put it in the patch notes at all until the change went live and it would have still not changed the reason for the change.
The reason for the change and how well they communicated [or how badly in this case] the fact that it was changing are entirely separate.

We’ve always had to do WvW for legendaries (unless we bought them finished ofc), there’s nothing new about that.. So no, I wouldn’t say we’re “super spoiled”. We just dislike having the work we already put in reduced to nothing. I have a feeling you would to.
Also, how in Tyria will being forced to redo WvW in any way make me excel at PvE? A shinier looking skin won’t make you better at the game, if that’s what you think. :P
On top of that I find it very odd, that in the SAME patch the WvW devs give WvW:ers access to Runes, Sigils, Armor- and Weaponstats previously only obtainable in PvE at a VENDOR in WvW (a response to complaints raised here on this forum about WvW:ers having to do PvE and how that just wasn’t right), they remove another WvW vendor and replace it with a WvW Reward track effectively FORCING PvE:ers to WvW (again)..
To me that says “We don’t want to force WvW:ers to PvE; but we’re gonna force PvE:ers to WvW.” It rings bloody false to me.
It was already a requirement to play WvW for the Gift of Battle. No change there.
The OP here suggests we only play PvE to get it, but leave the track in WvW.
So, no WvW required. I think we both disagree with that but I firmly believe part of what is driving this proposal is the effect of the poor communication.
Aside from the other tracks and rewards, the only significant change was the removal of the vendor that let ALL players spend their rewards earned in WvW, without actually ever saying when, in any patch notes ever.
For some of us, your last statement will be totally accurate when they replace the vendor temporarily, and not before. It’s not an attack on you or disagreement in what you are saying, it’s just more than that for some of us.

Also, once the reward tracks feature exits beta testing, the Gift of Battle legendary crafting component will no longer be available as a vendor purchase and will be earned via its own reward track.
Everyone was informed on April 19th, 2016. That is 2 months you had to get it and DECIDED not to.

Actually you could bypass it.
With laurels and badges of honor you can buy WvW experience to get to Rank 14. With badges of honor coming via achievements and you can get laurels without playing WvW at all, it was entirely possible to bypass playing WvW and still get the Gift of Battle.
How does how well/badly they communicated the change affect the reason for the change? You have yet to give me any explanation of how that can occur. So until you do, I will repeat that my statement is currently accurate.

First of all, people not interested in WvW don’t read the WvW section of the patch notes for obvious reasons.
Secondly, Anet conveniently forgot to announce when the feature would exit beta. Sure, some people who were in the WvW votes and in the forums knew about it, but most players wouldn’t even have the slightest clue.
There doesn’t need to be a PvE way to get GoB. The major problems with the change were that the warning was lackluster and that people who earned their badges got potentially stripped of their rewards, and now have to earn their GoBs for a second time.

I don’t think one has been able to purchase WvW experience in quite some time. Thus, only those that had prepared, previously, for acquiring the Gift of Battle would have been able to bypass WvW completely.
Regardless, it would be a nice gesture to restore the ability to purchase the Gift of Battle, if only for a short period of time, with better information dissemination.
If we earned enough badges in the past to buy multiple Badges of Honor, level 14 is not an issue.
The communication issue doesn’t affect the reason, but it does affect the statement.
For me and many others, the “Gift of Battle is to show that you have played WvW” but had to replay it again for the initial reward"

It doesn’t matter how many threads you post this in. While the patch notes are accurate, it only proves that no date was given. There was no way to know when WvW beta would end.
I read the patch notes, and all the following patch notes, looking for when.
THEY DIDN’T SAY.
Thank you. They are both correct and I should have tried to make that point without questioning correctness.
At the end of the day i and many others shouldnt have to play wvw this is my only thoughts on it i have played many MMOs over the years and i feel yes wvw does invite its own style and game play but its a side thing pvp in the same way there not the core game not saying there not part of it if even i would say there big enough that they should have there own weapons and armor myself i cant wvw and to do all my work for my legendary only to be forced to do wvw fishing against others i i feel its unfair.

You can get a legendary without playing any content you don’t want to. Save up gold and buy one off of the trading post.
And have you actually tried WvW?
I played WvW for a long time. Earned the rewards I sought and now they have no value because the notice was buried in WvW patch notes, that players not currently playing WvW skim over. Not only that but the “Poll” they did yea ranking up in wvw you would get a mail for it but most that don’t or rarely play wouldn’t get those. Even after i had voted then finally after hours of digging and reading couldn’t change my vote in the poll. This is really not fair to ones that do pve mostly, wvw mostly or a combination of both and pvp. Anet has to see what they did is not only causing problems but people leaving the game as well. It takes 1 gift for the old Legendarys but the new ones take more. Is this really reasonable of fair? No. I as well as at least 50 others in my Guild had no problem spending some money to buy gems 1-2 times a month for something we wanted or needed. Our guild is 9 years old and moved from GW1 we have a married couple that would spend a couple of hundred of dollars a month on gems to do guild giveaways for pre’s and other things to our guild. We have all decided to stop buying them now until this is reversed or changed. As we see it Anet has 4 options on how to fix this. 1. Just simple put the merchant back so we can get what we already earned. 2. Make the merchant available temporary time to allow us to get what we earned. 3. Unlock the merchant after doing the track once like a lot of the other merchants unlock stuff. 4. Make the new Legendarys only take 1 gift like the old ones did. I read patch notes too and this one was so big i even missed it cause of the way they did it let alone like others said those that don’t wvw much wouldn’t even have seen it and probably never look for a thread here to post to. This is one of the biggest mistakes i’ve seen Anet make to date. Yes there are bugs and things that need fixed some have for a long time. I have Nevermore and Chuka pre’s made and have stopped because of this. I do WvW daily but I am not going to grind for so many gifts to finish them. Anet said a long time ago they didn’t want this game to be a grind well they made it one with this now.
At the end of the day i and many others shouldnt have to play wvw
Fortunately you don’t.

Karmic Converter, guild commendations, HoT map currencies can all buy wxp. Former has been able to afaik ever since it was added, it just doesn’t come up often in it. The latter two have been able to buy it since HoT.
Really! I had no idea. Well, color me informed now. Thx.
Edit: I can’t find the acquisition method in the Wiki; could you post a link?
Nothing under Guild Commendations, nothing under WXP, nothing under Airship Parts that I can find.
I did find Liquid World Experience consumables as a chance in the Box of WvW Supplies from the Karmic Converter, though. So, there’s that. Might take quite some time to accumulate enough WXP from this source, as it is a chance within a chance of it being available.

My only regret…. not buying a bunch of these with my like 10k badges before the change over. But, I totally forgot they said they were doing that. sigh
I don’t understand why a WvW item should be required for Legendary Weapons. That’s like requiring some PvP item to get Ascended items.
Legendary weapons are the top tier of all weapons, they’re not specifically WvW weapons.
I don’t have a problem with WvW play being required. What I do have a problem with was the way Anet handled the change to acquiring GoBs. They stashed the announcement away with a small blurb in a gigantic patch note several months ago. Even if people saw it there was no date announced. It just stated once beta testing was over. Something this significant to those that don’t normally play WvW but want to work on a legendary should have been announced better. I think it would be fair for Anet to bring it back as a vendor item for say a few weeks.
Edit: I can’t find the acquisition method in the Wiki; could you post a link?
Certainly! Though you mentioned it in your post.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Box_of_WvW_Supplies#Acquisition
I’ve always gotten 2500 wxp when I open one. I actually didn’t know they could give any other amount until looking for that link for you. X3
It pops up very rarely in the Karmic Converter. For commendations, I’m not sure how often it comes up with just one guild hall. Four of my guilds have halls, and I see it in one of them every few days. One of the HoT currencies will have it up every few days, too.

Yes Ive played WvW, Ive been playing gw2 from day one but WvW for me just isn’t something I’m or many others are interesting in, atm you just follow the zerg get keeps loss them and re-pit Ive put many hours in to WvW as well back in the day but i really don’t enjoy it in any way.
And you cant buy the new legendary s on TP and even if you could whats the point of that i like making them and i like playing PvE legendarys give me that extra reason why playing something to move towards.
Also in saying that i cant get WvW armor in PvE and that’s fine but i think Legendarys 99% PvE should have WvW forced on them.
Also i have already Farmed 13 Legendarys over the years throw pure farming so im not a lazy player.

Just like they are stashing away any threads about it into a forum that few people whom it affects will ever visit. Just like they’ll do with this thread.

That is not what I said at all. I’ll probably have to do my track some day as well when I decide to work on another legendary. I’m not even high enough WvW rank to buy one right now if they brought the vendor back temporarily. I got my last one before they made that change, which was announced much better. I do not have a problem with doing the track when I need a GoB. I have a problem with how poorly the change was announced as it seems to affect a lot of people given how often this topic is brought up. Therefore, I think a small grace period to make it available via vendor would be well accepted by most.

It was in the notes, it was in the forums, it was on reddit, it often came up in LA map chat. I even saw it frequently in my pve guild chat, so I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if other pve guilds did the same. Did you want it on a neon sign on every loading screen, too? Why would that kind of change even need to be announced in advance, anyway? The entire point of the item was to require wvw, and the old way didn’t require it at all. At least this one does, so NOT announcing it in advance would have made the most sense.
I’m not sure there was any announcement of when WvW Tracks would be going out of beta; certainly not in the patch notes.
Luckily I was told about this a few weeks before the patch so I was able to buy a gift before it went live.
I did the WvW track grind for another last weekend, and it took me over 12h (utility primer ran out) I would say probably 15-18 hours in EOTM just following the blob commanders. IDK if that’s the most efficient way or not because I don’t usually WvW.
I will say this though. I had fun.
It’s a game mode I usually don’t participate in because I don’t have to but I got used to it and it ended up being pretty cool and got some spirit shards and champ boxes to boot.
So overall I think it’s a good change. Forces you to move out of your comfort zone and you never know you might end up liking it!

Most people who play this game are adults. We don’t need someone telling us to eat our broccoli because we might like it. And if we have already decided we don’t like WvW then what? Do it anyway or no Gift for you.
Doing things I don’t like is exactly why I play games… /sarcasm off

Except in this case, a lot of people have already eaten their vegetables, and now mom is sayin “that didn’t count, you have to eat more now.”
How about this idea:
WvW no longer gives players Badges of Honor, but instead a new currency.
ArenaNet reinstate the Vendor, and he sells the Gift of Battle for Badges of Honor just like before.
This way those that already earned the right to buy the gift(s) can do so, while those that did not can do the new track. Less frowny faces.
The gift of battle reward track forces PvE players who want legendaries to be in WvW for a period of time to FARM the thing.
I had to go spend hours upon hours in PvE land trying to get my gift of exploration and I am a WvW player who hates to do PvE. PvE players should be forced to play my game mode just like I am forced to play theirs if they want legendaries like I did. I think ANet put the gift of battle perfectly in line with how much of a pain it is to do PvE for WvW players like myself.
With petty people like you running around in WvW, who in their right mind would even want to go there? Wishing your own discomfort on others is just a sign that you’re not over it. And think about this: disgruntled PvE players in WvW can do a lot more damage than disgruntled WvW players in PvE. I’m not one of them, but if you’ve kept up to date on this discussion, you know there are plenty out there thinking about it, and probably plenty also doing it. But enjoy your WvW, if you even still do in its current state.
Care bear. I play WvW daily, it’s the best mode in the game. I enjoy it greatly. What I don’t enjoy is when anet forces me in to PvE to get things I want that are only available there. This is the only thing PvE players are forced into WvW for. Get over yourself.
1 – You sound extremely entitled
2 – You don’t even understand the complaints that people have over this issue. Until you do please stop just posting nonsense and QQing about it being “fair that PvE players have to suffer because I had to suffer” That doesn’t even make sense
3 – Players are upset because the communication over this change was pretty much non existent. 1 sentence buried at the bottom of patch notes almost 20 thousands words long. A sentence that wasn’t even under general game changes, but in the WvW section, a section that players who don’t play WvW will probably not even read. No date was given, it only said it would be removed when WvW reward tracks were removed from beta. But no announcement was given on a date for that either. Apparently there was a poll, again though the link to that poll was in the WvW forum, a forum that people who don’t play WvW wouldn’t read. So the vast majority of PvE players didn’t know that the change was coming, or for the few that did they never were told a date. ANet never made it easily accessible (ie an in game mail to all players) knowledge that the vendor was going to be removed in this patch. They never did. They actually went through a pretty large amount of effort to not make this information easily available to every player in the game even though it affects every player in every mode who may ever want a legendary. That is not ok. Especially when it invalidates all of the work that people already put in to get their gifts of battle.
Whether or not you agree that 500 badges was a fair price for the gift of battle does not change the fact that thousands of players put in the effort to get 500 badges so they could buy the gift of battle when they needed it, and now that was taken away from them. That is not ok because its just invalidating work that they did.
Grow up, realize that this isn’t about you and how much you had to “suffer” through PvE to get your gift of exploration, and that people are genuinely, and rightly, upset and kittened at a royal lack of communication on a very significant change that invalidated the work that a lot of players put into the game. That is never an ok thing for a company to do with their game.
I don’t understand why a WvW item should be required for Legendary Weapons. That’s like requiring some PvP item to get Ascended items.
Legendary weapons are the top tier of all weapons, they’re not specifically WvW weapons.
When the game first came out you could only take legendary weapons into PvE and WvW. So ANet made it so you had to step foot into both areas to get a legendary. There is no buying your way out of map exploration and when the game first came out, you had to do the 4 WvW maps to get 100% map exploration for the Gift of Exploration. You also had to get 500 Badges of Honor to get the Gift of Battle. Which initially you had to actually play WvW to get as the Achievement Point chests weren’t in the game at launch.
The first change was allowing for Badges of Honor to drop from AP chests. This removed having actually play WvW from making a legendary. You could get exploration done without actually playing if you were patient.
Second change was to require you to get to Rank 14 in WvW to buy the Gift of Battle. This was again to try to get players to actually play WvW, but there are workarounds to buy your way through this (not as easily as before though).
Third change was, imo, an unintended side effect of a solution to a worse problem. When they added the new borderlands to WvW, they added way too much RNG to which maps players would get and so took the WvW maps off of map completion so that players wouldn’t be stuck at 99% through no fault of their own and no real way of predicting if next week would be any different. They did not do it to make it so you did not have to play WvW to get a legendary.
So in reality, they’re only changing it to be more like it was when the game launched: having to actually play WvW to make a legendary. And given most of the changes have been to increase player activity in WvW, I doubt they’ll reverse their decision any time soon.
You either have to grin and bear it if you want to make your legendary or if you want one of the HoT legendaries or you have to buy an original legendary off of the TP.
I’m not too fond of WvW myself, so I’m arguing for a position that forces me to play a part of the game I’m not fond of myself. As I’ll likely want to make another legendary at some point. I’ll actually probably have to play WvW more as I’ll find it easier to grind out WvW for dungeon tokens than trying to deal with a dungeon (dungeons aren’t my favorite part of the game either).
I’m not too fond of WvW myself, so I’m arguing for a position that forces me to play a part of the game I’m not fond of myself.
Why?
The only reason I can understand that a person would do something that they don’t enjoy in a GAME is because they’re a masochist. Most people aren’t so Anet shouldn’t try to force people to do a type of content that they don’t enjoy.
(edited by Djinn.9245)
Thank you Anet prolonging our grind making legendary weapons! You just added more reason for players to be more burned out! One thing for sure, you guys never fail to disappoint us gg …..

Because I want the optional legendary weapon that comes from doing it. My desire for the legendary outweighs my dislike of WvW.
I have yet to find a game that I didn’t find something that I was not fond of that if I wanted to win the game or get some optional item I had to do it.
And legendary weapons are not required for any content in this game so ANet is not forcing you do to anything you do not want to do. You’re only forced to play WvW if you prefer one legendary skin over another. You can get a legendary weapon of your choice without playing WvW at all.
I don’t see how forcing players to play wvw ( gw2s deadest and kittentiest content) to craft their legendary weapons is going to spring life into wvw, it’s not. The reward track is cool, but removing it from the vendor wasn’t necessary at all.
deadest.
atleast in wvw we can use our legendary to kill a player, not just a random no iq monster in pve.
yeah, but atleast they should not removed it from vendors.
Or maybe get reward track progress for killing players, i’m in T1 wvw group and i’m easily 1v4ing 80s at 1000+ wvw rank in fractals gear. wvw is a joke.
Could also add the reward track to Spvp, the pvp in GW2 that people care about :^)
Nah i think having it on a wvw track is a good idea but the reward track system should be implemented a little better. I don’t think having a cap on the amount of points you can get per tick is good, after you reach that cap you can’t do anything at all to gain additional progress and it puts a needless time gate on getting that gift of battle while in the meantime you aren’t encouraged to do much more if your only goal in wvw was to go after that gift.
One idea i have is that perhaps it could get exponentially harder to get to the next tier of points per tick, there would continue to be a point to participating in wvw content to get even faster progress on the track.
Another idea is to have no cap on points per tick at all but instead to have a cap on rewards per day. It could even be balanced exactly as it is now so that you couldn’t exceed the amount of rewards you could get in a day through the current system but it would be better because even if you don’t like wvw you would be encouraged to participate more to min max the time spent in wvw versus the reward track progress
Awhile ago I had stacked up badges (Joined a good WvW guild) and saved purely just for cashing in for Gift of Battle as I didn’t like it but this would avoid the pain…
Just starting to craft Staff (currently doing collections which is a pain) and only just found out now I’am being forced to play WvW AGAIN!
Tried WvW after the update and it was dead, dull and consent out-numbered…. had no chance completing any reward track. I don’t have money to waste to transfer to a live WvW server just to do the reward track….
Please return the Gift of Battle back to vendors… I rather have WvW map explorer back instead of doing reward track for gift of battle…
or add it into a sPvP reward track.
I’d like to show the other side to this decision.
I hadn’t stepped foot into WvW in well over a year (where did the lakes go?). I had no drive to do so, even though I had had enjoyable moments in the past. There was no push, no itch, and no true reminder that it existed. I had a few thousand Badges of Honor; I was content.
Since this change, while I haven’t spent much time in WvW, I’ve found it exhilarating. Big battles, 1v3’s (which I handedly lost), 3v1’s (which we handedly lost), but a whole ton of fun. I would never have clicked on the WvW button; would never have enjoyed myself; would never have put up a (semi)-good fight for people on the other team; had it not been for this prompt to give it another shot.
It got me into WvW, it’s got other people into WvW, and completing the track is nowhere near the level of time and dedication that other portions of a legendary take.

If the track was not time gated you’d have a point. As it stands for me personally I’ve not gone into WvW for any great length of time since the last tournament, and before that it was just map completion. Being able to have fun in WvW is very dependant on having other people on your map, that are on your team, and want to do the same things you do. Out side of peak time having any fun in WvW out side of the EoTM K trains is non existent.
The change to the GoB will not make people play WvW again, it might make some, but not all. I can think of better things to do with the 8 hours it would take to fill the track(this is how long people have been saying it takes). It’s not like WvW is the most rewarding game mode to begin with. If you don’t have a commander on your map you are not going to get anywhere, or have a clue what to do.
I remember my first time in WvW, walk into the map, start to make my way to where the fighting was supposed to be, get killed by a 5 vs 1. Wait for more people to go with them. Get wiped out again. If your with a blob, WvE can be great fun, if your on your own or never played WvW before, your going to have a bad day.

If it normally takes 8 hours…its gonna take me weeks to complete… lucky me!
I’ll be spending my free time after work running around in empty WvW maps out-numbered and getting killed… not really what I would call “Fun”.
Alright for the people with no life commitments who are able to join an organize groups/guilds at any time….its empty when i have the chance to play these days.
I already accepted that I will never able get a legendary armor due to time is needed. I could have still able to create legendary weapons but anet are so thoughtful and removed GoB from vendor making my stack a completely waste of time…. and made it boring, lame and hard to gain GoB….

I think the change was very poorly communicated, and should be reversed for short time.
That said… I think I understand why they made the change – they don’t want you to be able to make progress of two separate parts of the legendary at the same time – earning badges for the GoB while also making progress on one of the dungeon tracks for that particular gift.
I don’t think they should add this back to a vendor, I think the reward track is fine. However, I do think the reward tracks in WvW need work, at least the one for the gift of battle shouldn’t require as much time in WvW.
However, I do think they need to add gift of battle back to a vendor for a temporary amount of time, like a week or two. It’s bs they came in and changed it without most of the community knowing they were going to change it. They should have sent players a mail announcing it was going to be changed a week or so before hand or added it to the loading screens like they add the PvP announcements. No, I’m not one of the players arguing this so I can buy a gift of battle with badges, I don’t have many badges right now nor do I need a gift of battle; but I do understand the complaint.
