I could see why it would be considered a good idea to make people explore more aspects of the game overall with the recent edition of this item that is required to make legendary weapons, which is a long time goal of many who play this game. The world vs world aspect of guild wars 2 can seemingly be fun for many as well as rewarding at first glance, but is it?

Before making this post I took the liberty of reading over some of the piror posts and replies by others and sadly I am seeing the same thing i see in game as well as in this forum time after time, in addition to the reason I am posting this myself. I am kicking myself for not having bought this before it was moved to only be obtainable via WvW because of one thing: how unbalanced it is.

I am sure it can be enjoyable for someone who is on one of the higher population servers as there’s about a billion of them in there nearly every hour of the day, versus the tiny handful of those on servers that aren’t exactly teaming with never-ending zergs. I have seen many of these enormus high population server groups infact take longer to take bases then some of the groups on lower end servers with at least 4 times as many people. Even a few of those on more populated servers have posted on this forum that “they got bored and quit because they were mowing down enemies so fast they barely had time to hit a button before the enemy died”.

I came into a wvw map today to work on the reward track for gift of battle myself, one of the few items i have left to make my first legendary, only to find we not only had 0 bases, but were being directly assaulted right in front of where you load into the map….I wish i could say i was surprised.

Every single time I enter WvW at any time, of any day, of any week it does not seem to change, from the time you enter its a constant uphill battle just to re-take your home where you enter, flooding the map with tags and squads, just to be mowed down by not 1, but 2 of the opposition who outnumber everyone you have there 100 to 1.

Apart from the mode itself, even before Gift of Battle being made WvW obtainable only, this doesn’t seem to change, and now thats its only obtainable this way seems like a slap in the face to everyone who goes in there expecting to win at least sometimes, only to remember that for every one of them, there is about 50 of the other guy right around the corner ready to make anything you could possibly do pointless. No matter how many people you get in there to try and take anything you are immidiatly run over by a large number of enemies, that they don’t even have to try, they simply punch the keyboard over and over with their knuckles and they win. I think a lot of them have actuly forgotten what it is to have to try at anything with how easy it is to take an entire map based solely on the fact that they outnumber anyone on the other side 100 to 1 and nothing else.

In all fairness, and literally, to make it even the slightest bit fair to servers without a population of over a billion or so, there should be a limit to how many people from overflowing servers can be on the maps at a single time, or some kind of stat handicap, at least something to make it even the slightest bit fair. As it stands the situation is comparable to a 5 year old attempting to compete in the olympics.

yup, that is a pretty fair summation.

the stat handicap may not be as possible but there could be a point scoring handicap if map has a certain percentage more players than the other leading to a more negligible contribution of points based on the percentage of population discrepancy. I believe the game already has ability to do all this based on scaling and bronze,silver, gold contribution medals but not sure how quickly this can be adjusted or deal with moving pops on a single map vs single “champion” or “boss” area.

The tiers were supposed to balance out the population. Because people will want to transfer it, it is better for an automatic mechanism to balance out the matches. If your world is not doing so well, it should drop after a week to be matched against other worlds that aren’t so active too

Hi there, I understand your frustrations but hopefully there is a way around this.

1. If everything is taken by the enemy, then there are plenty of small objectives likely unguarded such as camps and sentries you can take solo or with a friend or two. There is more then one map so across all four maps you should be able to get a bit of WXP a day.

2. Use your buffs, Guild Halls now offer a Reward track bonus and daily rewards give track progression potions. Vet creature, sentry, caravan, camp are all achievable individually. It may take time, but progress is progress.

3. Connect with your community. What server are you on? What time zone do you play? Have you checked out your servers website (most have one)? Are there any guilds that do organized raids you can join? Are you using map chat to look for allies? Do you have friends you can bring to WvW with you.

4. The most active time for WvW is reset, if you can make that then you will have people to play with and even if you are on a losing side have an opportunity to get some track progression.

The gift of Battle unless I’m mistaken was always a WvW item, they just changed it to a reward track instead of Badges of Honor. Just be thankful WvW doesn’t count towards map completion anymore, or you’d be really upset :P.

@OP: I don’t think things are really that dire you make them out to be. Sounds like a typical PvE argument. Right now my server is holding our corner in EB and thats it. I did rage quit half an hour ago (but also because I don’t like wvw like I used to for multiple reasons), but I know that the tables will be turned later in the day – and we’re EU, so we don’t have 24/7 coverage anyway – and even when I was on NA things were like this.

Anyway, on topic of the GoB:
I do wonder why they made it this way. Map completion of wvw was a piece of cake compared to this and even that led to a neverending flood of complaints. With precursers now somewhat easier to obtain I expect this to become another neverending story.
And well, personally: The reward tracks are kind of nice but being forced to do certain ones diminishes that.

the difficulty of obtaining the gift of battle has nothing to do with how badly outnumbered your server may be. Take some camps, take some sentries, keep moving around taking more camps and sentries, all things that are super easy to capture solo, and even easier as a duo. Enemy zergs rarely bother chasing you away from the middle sentries in the BLs. They may swarm you at a camp, but if so, move to another map. That is more than enough to max out your participation, maintain it for around 8.5 hours and you get your gift. The amount of effort required to get it is a tiny blip compared to what you need to do to get the other parts of a legendary.

The wiki even shows that the Outnumbered buff increases the participation amount from capping camps and sentries by 50%. Outnumbered is life

The best bet for the OP might be to find someone, perhaps in his guild, to partner up with that has more experience in WvW and roaming to help flip camps and stuff.

At least the GoB is not broken like the PvE event that is holding everyone up on the very first precursor for the legendary hammer Juggernaut. It’s been broken for about 2 weeks now. I earned my GoB in 5 or 6 evenings.

Hmm, never really had that much trouble with reward tracks tbh, and my server has ended up 3rd for the longest while with the worst KDR NA…. and worst at everything else really. I imagine the lower tiers always have some degree of downtime where you can freely pvdoor though it would seem t4 has been a bit messed up atm?

Maybe they should have a GoB in the middle of the track as well for a total of two. This wouldn’t affect anyone that plays WvW regularly.

Ermm, your concern isn’t about balancing even if you did typed a wall of text of it. Your main concern is obtaining the gift (and whatever) EASILY. For that, you can do what others have done (which has upset the balancing inorder to obtain everything EASILY), stack on server.

Anyway, on topic of the GoB:
I do wonder why they made it this way.

Because ANet knows well that without a huge influx of PvE players, WvW’s statistics would show their efforts for fixing the game mode are largely too late and are not actually fixing the problems, but rather symptoms.

This way, after mass departure from HoT, they can make claims that population levels are fine, despite the fact that other audiences of players are being strong-armed into the format to make investors happy and players feel like their developments are going well.
