WvW is in a state of flux right now with all the patch changes so some information may not be as correct or relevant as before; just remember that when researching.

You should also consider getting into a guild, getting a mic, and start learning to use Team Speak. Learn to use Team Speak even if you dont want to be in a guild as Worlds have setup public communities for everyone to use for FREE! Bear in mind that some World have different rules for using it to combat spies.

Hi

As mentioned above class balance and WVW in general are in quite a bit of state of flux at the moment, so giving out specific advice is not really feasible, but I can give you some fairly sound general tips which are still good, I have helped many new players get into it in my time. So here goes:

Get / install teamspeak, you do not need microphone or talk if you don’t want to, but be able to listen in on stuff. this will really help you out a great deal.

Hop into WVW and ask in map chat for TS info, once in the public lobby, ask for permission so you can join people in the channels.

I would go with the guardian and Ele, I think they are in better spots then warrior. In fact I would recommend you start on your guardian and make your initial build heavy on defenses until you get the hang of things. In general, make a cheap build using salvagable exotics with some cheap runes and sigils, you need a ton of stunbreakers, condi cleanses, lots of HP and armor, this is a bit harder to do on Ele then guard.

Use cheap stuff, PVT exotics, you can buy some pieces for karma from temples, some from the WVW vendors, craft them, buy them of off TP fairly cheap etc. Runes, again go with cheap, available and fairly effective, I recommend Runes of Melandru. For sigils, run 1 Sigil of Generosity and 1 Purity or Accuracy, or if you can splurge, Energy.

For boons, your most important boons are going to be stability, protection, vigor, make sure you end up with around 20k+ health and around 3k armor. Have minimum 2 stun breakers and 2 cleanses, I typically run with 4 each via various abilities and trait effects.

Play with that for a bit, once you understand how things work you can start branching out and mixing things up to become part of a team comp or go DPS for some roaming or whatever you like, but do go full defensive at start, so you don’t end up just being rallybait and flat on your face in the ground all the time and actually get to to that point in the 1st place.

Hope this helps you out a bit

If you want to start out as elementalist. I should recommend a cantrip build. with earth armor, mist form and lightning flash. you have a lot of get away/stun break skills. Don’t go to squichy at the start and use staff. I think overall that’s the best way to start out as elementalist.

As a guardian be sure to use shelter and renewed focus. There both good ‘panic’ buttons. But be aware that the wells frome a necro aren’t blockable so you can’t use shelter to bunker a well spike. I think the easiest way is to start with full pvt armor and trinkets. You will do almost no damage but you will learn the flow of battle. Then you can start out to swap some trinkets to berserker when you feel the time is there.

Two useful tidbits about metabattle.com if you choose to reference it.

1) metabattle have some good builds in the wvw build section, titled “GvG”, but it is far from comprehensive. The build diversity in all varieties of wvw is much greater than pvp and yet it may appear the opposite way round when comparing the GvG and conquest lists.

2) I tend to find that metabattle builds are too glassy for me when I try out a new build. I make plenty of use of soldiers and/or dire gear when trying something new and gradually slot in glassy pieces of gear one at a time until I find the sweet spot between damage and surviving. It saves a lot of running back from spawn and makes for much running to a safe tower when I’m learning how a build or profession functions.

EDIT: Correcting poor grammar

Just get in there and enjoy it. Hop on whatever voice comms your server uses and join a WvW focused guild to get builds and strategies. A lot of the stuff people tell you on the forums become irrelevant once you join a WvW guild as many guilds do different things in different ways.

I do have to stress the WvW focused guild part though. There are many guilds that advertise they do WvW, but it’s usually like, 2 people roaming around for a few minutes.

I think the best advice to give is to not get frustrated. You are going to get killed. It happens and it could happen a lot. Just need to try and learn when to get into fights and when to avoid them. Get on voice comms despite what the forums make it seem there are a ton of happy helpful people in our game that are totally willing to help you enjoy yourself more.

if you have never been to a WvW map – here some very basics.
choose a map to hop into (you will only have one starting point per map available at first) or go from lions arch/city portals.
open the map once you are there (M).
look at it.
there are three colours! one of them is yours, remember it for this week.
objectives held by your colour are safe for you to go to, others can be taken.

as soon as you leave the safe zone expect to fight and/or run and certainly die many horrible deaths if you meet enemies (or fall from cliffs) or if you are a spvp expert maybe not

find a camp that is owned by your colour and pick up supplies or pick them up from a tower depot. try to carry supplies always, you might need them to build or repair.

try to find your way around the map and explore it, look what others are doing and maybe follow them. You can ask questions in chat aswell.

folks go there to pick fights in any size and form and/or take and hold objectives. (the bigger the objective the “harder” to take, ranging from-to sentry, camp, tower, keep, garison, stonemist)

you can worry about builds and such the second or third time if you find it interesting.
the nice thing in WvW: you play your own game.
depending on the class you bring and your interest there is 1vs1 or 1 vs more or 3vs2 or 80vs80 fights or just sneaking about or taking little objectives alone or zerging/raiding with a small, midsize or larger groups or fights only or scouting….

Outside of WvW guilds, almost all servers have a server community established forum where many of your questions may already be answered. Ask around in mapchat for your server. There’s usually a helpful soul.

Anyone who’s played wvw has done a thousand faceplants.

Get back up. Respawn. Go at it again.

Eventually it will happen less frequently as you hone the timing of your class.

Once you let go of a fear of dying, you’ll play much better. And enjoy it more, too.

There are websites out there with quite decent info regarding team comps in WvW or even just roamer builds, Zerg builds and GvG ones.

Metabattle is the norm and an okay starting point but I recommend branching out from that and tweak your build to suit YOU; if you need more defense.. Put some soldier gear into it etc.

As for classes the ones you have listed, primarily Guard + Ele are always a welcome sight in WvW seeing as guardian has access to easy stability share & is the frontline tanky role but also Ele being back line support. I am not too fond of Ele so I will leave it to others to explain it’s role in WvW better.

If you are starting out I highly recommend installing TS3 and get to know the server’s channels so you can be ready to join them when out there in battle. It also vastly helps if you are in a guild, furthermore – a guild that has a passion for WvW and can assist you in learning more to do with team comps and what you should be running to benefit the outcome of the scenario as a whole.

It’s okay to die – it happens. A lot. Do not let it clamp you down, just get up and get back out there but be mindful and situationally aware at all times; especially with enemy bombs. Getting stuck in a mass CC bomb with condis is certain death so I suggest make sure you have stability or stun breaks and condi cleanse + appropriate foods at hand.

Try different classes, see what you like! Experiment!

As others have stated the “meta” is or could be shifting a bit so some builds on websites could be outdated.

Hope that helps and happy hunting!

Regarding TS.
Expect a community that has its own heroes, villains, drama and prejudices. If you want fun stay clear of the drama. Right now there is a lot of salt and bitternes in quite a few comunities, if you are knew stay clear and concentrate on the game itself.

Regarding attitude:
- your own:
Fights may get chaotic for you, look how other guys arround you do it.
Do not over commit in an attack. If you guys push, stay with the main body, there are often skilled focus groups that take you out quite fast if you isolate yourself.
Try taking camps with your zerg gear and build to learn your build.
There is nothing wrong with zerg fights, its a question of taste. Do not let other people tell you what to do be it roaming vor zerging.
Get to grips with the map, defence and offence often happen a certain way.
Get to grips with siege weapons.
Learn what supplies are for and how to use them to your team’s advantage.
Find a role you like. You have to like it, not some random kitten on the internet.

After those things you may think of joining a wvw guild.
But please do try to make some experiences of your own. Do not believe everything people say on TS. TS has the Option to mute, do it rather than argue with every random Bob about stuff that will not matter in 30 years.

Have fun. If you don’t stay clear of wvw. Finally if you do not like THW people vor their attitude on your server, transfer. People are fond of expressing seither that it’s the same every where or that server\nationality XYZ is evil incarnate while they are XYZ Leonidas 300 skillzor… I think you see what i am getting at.

Once again: your experience counts, your taste and fun

Consider what kind of WvW mode you want to play.

Casual / solo : Focus your WvW traits on guard defense and offense, solo flip camps / shrines / sentries, scout, sentry. Class: Any class

Havoc : Find a guild / group of friends (3~8) to run around a map and flip objectives (camps / towers) and fight small enemy groups. Get cata / ram / supply WvW traits. Class: Ele / Guard

Guild : Find a guild in your time zone. Get siege def / ops WvW traits. Run with them every day to learn where to place siege, what to do against enemy groups / siege. You can flip keeps. Class: Staff Ele / Staff-GSword Guard

Zerg : Find a pugmander. Stay on tag. Class: Any class

Hey. My guild and I posted a video series on Youtube some time ago. Some of the stuff is outdated, but overall I think it still gives a good introduction to the combat in WvW. I hope you’ll enjoy it
