just naming the popular commanders shouldn’t be a deciding factor for picking a server. Determine what you’re looking for first, zerg, turtle, defend, etc, then pick an appropriate server for that. stick it out when things get bad and work hard to make your server best before jumping ship.

I think the problem here now is that with the Lost Shores final day event (I missed it but heard what dropped) gave everyone the ability that wanted to have an icon to afford said icon. I saw what seemed like only a few icons on Anvil Rock turn into around 35 overnight or more over night. I jokingly say there are 50 “commanders” here, but I’m probably not far off.
What you should be asking is a question to be answered from the individual server communities as to how their commanders behave, progress, work well with each other, if they answer questions or “expect” you to know instantly how WvW works, did they “command” before getting the Icon and how long, etc etc and so on. I know in my experience I was a non-icon commander long before even wanting to don the icon overhead. I’ve lead 18 hour assaults (very exhausting btw) and other days I just don’t turn the icon on because I see teamwork already present. I know I certainly make mistakes but I also bring a lot of siege with me and have lead massive good outcome and bad outcome battles (EPIC on both ends of the stick regardless).
Go into each server thread that your interested in, see how the “mood” is, and start asking those active people how their commander’s are and get varying opinions. It would be a start at least, but you may have to dig further. And for the record AR’s commanders are a 50/50 chance. One half know their stuff, the other half are what are known as “puppet” commanders.
