Guardian or Thief
I would suggest a guardian, the reason is … a lot of people cry out thieves and I wont go into details why but chances are they will get nerfed at some point whether they deserve it or not is irrelevant because it will happen. Guardians on the other hand I believe most will agree are in a good spot balance wise. So if you don’t want to deal with a lot of QQ/nerfs go guardian.
I have played guardian and its a lot of fun, I have never played a thief past lvl 5 so I can’t comment reliably on them but from what I’ve heard they are a lot of fun as well.
So do you want to be nerfed at some point or not because it seems both classes are enjoyable.

Guardians have been nerfed every patch since open beta. Not sure wtf you’re talking about.
I have both a guardian and thief at 80.
If I want fun I log on my thief and run around killing people, especially low level people, and get a lot of badges. If I want to play more support then I log on my guardian and either hold the front line or charge in to break up opposition zergs. You can set both professions up to be support or offensive. Guardians don’t all have to be bunker build guardians and thiefs don’t all need to be backstab build. It all depends on what profession mechanic you like better and what suits you.

Awsome! Thanks for the post and suggestion. I am curious though, you say if you want fun you log on your thief, does that mean the guardian isn’t fun and you log on it more to help out the team rather than you yourself enjoying it? That is kind of what I fear from the Guardian, that sure, I can support my team and they will love me for it, but I will never be able to actually get my own kills or be sufficient on my own.
I understand what you are saying, that you can build your character up a certain way. It just seems that even if I went all out offense on a Guardian, you wouldn’t be able to get the kills / do as well solo as a thief since thieves are so slippery and yea, stealth is so much fun lol. I do love the plate however, and the 2 hand weapons are a blast. Ahh, tough decision it is!

Every class has had “nerfs” the guardians haven’t really hurt the class, my concern is thieves will eventually get hit hard. OP asked a question why not try to answer it instead of coming here to troll.
Thief if you like killing people.
Guardian if you don’t like dying.
Thief if you like killing people.
Guardian if you don’t like dying.
What if I want both?
Hah, but I see what you’re getting at. I guess in the end being an impenetrable wall wielding a huge weapon with plate mail and being an asset to my friends sounds like the best route for me. Guardian it is! Thanks everyone for your advice!
D/D elementalist, if you want both :P I know that’s irrelevant to the subject… just saying lol
just play a hammer guardian. It’s the best style out there.
Highest dps, highest utility, almost unlimited blast finishers at 5 sec cd, almost impossible to kill with altruistic healing and the right spec…
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
Make a thief and you wont regret it.
Gaurdian if fun, but the support role had been nerfed to oblivion with a 5 cap heal.
Thief you can farm badges 10 times better.
Check out some tube vids about both classes if you are unsure, i would defently suggest thief class in WvW tough.
Thief if you like killing people.
Guardian if you don’t like dying.
I think otherwise. Choose thief if you don’t like dying. As a thief, you will NOT die. When your hp hit a low threshold, stealth and do a alt-F4 to exit the game. No one will kill you for sure.
Thief if you like killing people.
Guardian if you don’t like dying.
People try really hard to condense down the professions to one-sentence wonders like this, but the fact is they’re both malleable in what they can do. If you don’t like dying as a thief you can just spec for 7 dodges in a row, fastest movement in the game, stealth, high HP/regen/condition removal, etc. You will never die, but you won’t be able to do much else.
You can also spec guardian to be a high-offense 1v1 powerhouse and camp out looking for people to destroy, just like you can with a thief.
A guardian will generally have a more reactive playstyle whereas a thief will generally have a more proactive playstyle though.
Guardian all the way.
Thieves kill things quickly and die quickly.
Guardians kill things slower (but we do still get those kills) and never die unless overwhelmed in numbers.
Only ever lost to thief in WvW once. And this is after a 5 minute fight with a broken mouse (though I do admit he was the best thief I have fought so far).
Guardian destroys rangers, Warriors, Elementalists, Mesmers, Thief, Engineers, Necro (depending on build)….I better stop before another nerf bat comes our way.

As a guardian, the only professions I generally avoid in combat are guardians and warriors…just because often we can’t kill one another. Thieves run from me if they get lucky, and mesmers/rangers/eles are insanely easy to drop if you know what you’re doing. Necros are a bit annoying, but no more difficult than the others.
If you’re a skilled player, though, it doesn’t matter what you pick.
as u can see guard can be more than support its one of the best dueling classes if you learn to play it well and have some guts you can do allot, thf also great roaming solo class but i would go gaurd
Asura -Thief

there is literally no guardian that has ever killed me in wvw… but I am one of their worst nightmares… a condition thief.

Well my guardian only has toughness gear on it at the moment so I can’t kill much unless I’m left completely alone with a guy for a few minutes. I am working on getting dps gear (guardian just turned 80). Whereas my thief has 3 different sets (played since launch). I will add that I do play as a burst spec guardian in sPvP and it is fun and if your good enough you can kill people easily.
Since my guardian turned 80 I am enjoying it more than my thief and overtime might be my main.
in terms of efficiency
every guardian will feel efficient in an zerg, or an small group,
His utility’s just shine over there, wall of reflection , staff 3 /4/5 , 2 buuble’s , retreat are increbile skills on assault’s / hold the line on defensive, stand your ground for toe to toe.
on the other side, thief is a lone wolf, can take supply camps , hunt yaks with an lower risk but in an zerg vs zerg his efficiency is low compared to an guardian.
he can be tactic and only scout the map for his ally’s but group utility’s are limited.

I get most of my kills on my thief in Zerg v Zerg. Reason being is you will find a lot of low hp targets to burst down for easy kills. This also helps your force because if you down a player and finish then that’s one less person to worry about and if you don’t finish them chances are 2 or more people will go over to res. people ressing won’t hurt your Zerg and thus allow you to charge forward. You can get straight into the heart of a Zerg, kill, and get out.
