GvG Scene and anet
WvW != GvG
gvg scene is long and gone
It’s dead because it never got the attention it deserved. Anet can bring it back up but they aren’t going to do it because they make no money from it
Okay so I’m back again with the same idea about why it would be great if anethe brings back WvW season with GvG tourneys. Anet make a website where guilds can sign up then do off season skirmishes between the guilds and choose top 10 guilds who will be able to participate in the on seasonew tournaments. A lot of people are like fix the scoring system, merge this, link this okay great! That’s important but it still doesn’t fix the pale state of the game. A lot of players have left tel he game because anet never recognized GvG as a game mode that could be a lot more than just an made up game mode. Hell one time one of the anet devs interrupted a gvg and trolled the two guilds that were about to fight. That did make a lot of people angry and they quit the game. I think the lack of recognition for GvG scene by anet is also one of the reason why a lot of people quit the game. If anet brings back WvW season with tourneys and GvG leader boards I can imagine a lot of people returning back to game. Hey anet I know you wouldn’t make money out of WVW season and GvG leader boards as much as PvP season but hey sometimes do something for the players not just for the money
.
It was stated that after each tournament there were permanent losses to the wvw playerbase.
GvG ship sailed, and even if it came back, it shouldn’t be hosted inside wvw maps.
If you are that passionate about gvg then maybe start your own ladder and host it in your guild hall.
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
It’s dead because it never got the attention it deserved.
Eh, there’s multiple reasons it is dead, one of which is that everyone played it out.

Many guilds seemed to die shortly after HoT hype died down, just after getting back into the game after a break. It’s likely a case of, too little too late.
Raiding as a Guild in wvw is something I enjoyed a for long while, it’s not quite the same as GvG, you also take objectives and defend when needed, while fighting other guilds and blobs.
Toxicity was a problem yes, there are many egos involved, plenty of drama.
You want new guilds to form, stay active, especially if so many guilds disband. In the end, you’re just left with the what’s left, stacked in the handful of Guilds left, not spread out and every guild trying to form/reform, disbands, or just 1/2 guilds disband in the meantime, to make way etc.
tl;dr there is little new players joining the gvg scene nowadays, it’s just the same players moving between guilds constantly, until they get caught up in rl or another game.

GvG probably could have been esports for GW2 — certainly much better than the PvP it has now — if it had been supported 2-3 years ago. Lost opportunity by Anet, who never liked GvG.
Honestly the GvG meta tended to follow the WvW meta. CC, Aoe damage, and Tankiness are key. Pick teams have much fewer “targets” to go after. Nomads gear is much more prevalent. And the matches can often be decided by just who can get there murder ball on the slightly less tanky backline first since the two murderballs pretty much don’t do anything to eachother until the cooldowns are gone.
So the gameplay (while still fun) can grow stale after awhile. Many of hte old builds people enjoyed don’t exist anymore (Pick rangers for example were only a thing for a couple months but with HOT disappeared entirely. There is simply too much random projectile defense in the game. And a scrapper can just chase you around until you die causing most “druids” now to run nomads like the frontline.)
The guild halls also split the gvg guilds in half. Some guilds are willing to fight in arenas. Others aren’t.
Then you have the current prebuffing. Its entirely possible to stack your frontline with 2 bloody minutes of resistance and protection. Not to mention permanent swiftness, regen, fury, and might. And with the way revenants pulse boons it makes stripping those stacks almost pointless. You rip it off and its back on in a second with the duration steadily rising.
This means that classes that don’t have a method of piercing through boons don’t have much of a place unless there frontline capable or boon producers themselves. WIth further reinforces the aoe pressure meta as opposed to focusing a target down one at a time. Pressure the group until someone misses a cooldown. Then gang up on them and move on to the next. Where before it was possible to single a target out ahead of time and really focus on killing that one victim forcing the rest of the team to either attack one of yours to force you off of there ally or cover for them. That IS still possible but its much more difficult.
Tl;DR. the current dynamics of the game don’t support terribly diverse methods of GvGing. Where before you could see multiple teams had completely different strategies involved. Now there is typically one general meta with very small differences between compositions. This caused many guilds to feel that it had grown stale. And they simply weren’t willing to go through the trouble of dealing with glitchy guild hall maps or dealing with trolls interfering with there gvgs in OS
Luckily there are still guilds that run there own flavor. And I feel its mostly them that are keeping the GvG scene struggling along until something changes.

The GVG scene was extremely boring both to watch and participate in, too limited engagements, always same numbers of opponents, limited tactics. On top of that it was often toxic to their host servers and their own communities.
GVG scene died out for several reasons:
1. Toxicity to their own communities – this greatly reduced the pool of recruits for replacement players. The GVG guilds basically slowly killed themselves with this one until there was not enough members left.
2. Boredom – as stated above, too limited in fights and tactics, lack of random elements that pugs, siege and various terrain features bring into play.
3. Server transfers and server stacking – when YB was getting overstacked and artificially pushed to T1, it basically wrecked the GVG scene, especially on SOS, they all transferred to T3, but T3 didn’t have enough population to support GVGs on appropriate scale.
My personal feeling on this is, that if A-Net ever did do GVGs and a leaderboard / ladder, it should be part of SPVP, not WVW. Simply enlarge maps, make them deathmatch instead of conquest based and a limit of 20 players per side + spectators.
Done and Done. No need for arenas, no need to worry about gear, and eliminate their toxicity to the communities, all in one swoop. Therefore, you should post this in the SPVP forum, not here.
You forgot to mention time commitment. GvG did reach a pretty high level due to some serious time players put into it working on builds, practicing, reviewing video, etc. The only real way to support that was to have had some pro form of it, like what is done in sPvP, although that is harder to do with 15-20 people than 5. Without that, burnout was pretty real. A lot of former GvG players went casual or quit the game completely. The competition just isn’t there for them to return either.

If guilds would be really interested in doing GvG with a ladder system or something they would go to: http://play.eslgaming.com/guildwars2/global/gw2/open/ladder-gvg-europe/
ESL “Trailer” and informations:
http://www.clips9.com/files/2016/02/guild-wars-2--esl-gvg-lad/1Y2KZvIzHLs.html
there were also some player projects to implement sth like this:
http://www.GW2GVG.com – dead
http://www.gw2leaderboards.com – dead
that’s what people say if they get asked for a seperate gvg ladder or a pvp ladder system like clanbase (maybe anyone still know clanbase):
“there will be enough competition between guilds to hold keeps in WvWvW for me”
so if people really want something like this, do a post in every known gw2 forum (also fan-based), tell them what you’re aiming for, stack people with knowledge about HTML, PHP, CSS and other stuff and just do it!
the only is thing that anet have to do is making it possible that every guild can fight versus any guild even when they’re not in their matchup.

GVG lol……controlled situation with even numbers following a meta. A mode for bad players.

Perhaps if you had ever participated in a GvG against a truly skilled guild you’d know the levels of coordination required instead of writing them off as “bad players.” Ridiculously ignorant.

Again those were all player based not supported by anet like few people said previously if anet had taken their personal approach to gvg scene and actually turned into a mode or “esports” GvG would still be a thing and a lot of people would have loved to participate in it.

Anet really needs to test that out, 8/10 man gvg + plus another pvp model + ladder, similiar maps and mechnics to gw1 gvg.
Too little too late.

Doing GvGs, raiding with my GvG guilds and finding other GvG guilds on the WvW battlefield is the best fun I’ve had with this game. I will always remember the Anet guy telling us we couldn’t GvG at the Windmill. As if capturing empty objectives for a useless PPT system is more interesting than skilled fights between groups of friends.
It’s a complete missed opportunity that Anet never supported GvG guilds, the reason I’ve moved on and will just probably never come back
Even if the WvW overhaul they’ve been working on for “over a year” end up not being just a few tiny changes I don’t see the GvG community rebuilding itself to play on the same Alpine BL map that isn’t even as interesting as before the orbs were removed.

Seriously tho they can still implement a ladder system with gvg tourney in wvw season and try it out because everything’s is in “beta” right now. You never know how many guilds out there or players that would be interested in doing this
There are several reasons the GvG scene is dead.
1. Stability change reallllllly hurt GvGs and turned WvW into a pirate ship meta because pushing was not an option often enough.
2. Most of the bigger GvG guilds have left the game or fallen apart because of reason #1.
3. Like others said, people burn out and moved on.
4. There are too few “competitive” guilds left to even do GvGs. I can only think of a few off top of my head, some of which aren’t even very interested in doing GvG.
I personally used to GvG pretty often with several guilds, it was fun but ultimately not as fun as WvW zerg busting in my opinion. I personally got burnt out on GvGing which is why I got away from it before the stability change anyway.

If arbitrary GvG matches were possible (across WvW matchups) GvG would have been much bigger.
With the matchups restriction, it’s amazing that there even was a GvG scene. There really was a lot of buzz and interest behind GvG and Anet just dropped the ball.
If GvG was supported by Anet from the beginning when you had 3-5 guilds on a server doing it then it would have taken off and carried the eSPURTZ dream.
Unfortunately they refused to dump any resources/time into GvG or WvW for that matter, and now they are left with a flagging game. Completely anet’s fault.

What do you mean test that out? GW2 had 8v8 sPvP once and it was lots of fun. They decided to change it to 5v5. End of story.
IF they’d do it, it’d probably be too little and it’d definitely be too late.
Might just be me doom-thinking, but I just don’t see it working.

Substituted multiple times for various guilds during gvg peak, easy mode son.
All I’m saying is that anets testing a lot of things out right now maybe for a quarter anet can test this out too + I’m a very optimistic person.
I think the bulk of the hardcore, competitive WvWvW playerbase is already dead and gone so the window for GvG getting actual support is likely closed. It would have been nice to zerg bust while queued up for a GvG (guildmates on the bench could spectate or swap in). But nope! It’s either 5 man MOBA or zerg play built around the ultra casual.
