You will never get competitive WvW in its current form

WvW is not a competitive game mode. Let it sink in. WvW is not a competitive game mode and it will never be. At least, not in its current form. There are 2 main reasons for that :

Reason #1 : It’s active all day long : There are more hours in the day where you will not be able to play than hours where you will be able to play.

Reason #2 : There are too many players. You just cannot organize all the players that will fill all the 4 maps 24/7 in order to win a match up.

To become competitive, it needs to be shrink down because right now, it’s too big.

Introducing GvGvG

Here are my proposals to bring competitiveness to the game mode.

- A day is split in 8 timezone of 3 hours.
- A new match up starts at the beginning of each timezone with new opponents
- There is only 1 map per match up and the map selected is random between the 4 we currently have
- There are 3 opponents per match up, each opponent being one single guild
- A guild can chose 1 timezone it will compete in and it will only be able to play during that timezone
- Glicko ratings are now associated to guild instead of server

What to do with WvW as we know it today?

By all mean, keep it. I think that WvW and GvG (as I describe it), can coexist and should coexist. The game need a game mode where a player can just hop in at any time to capture a few towers or kills a few enemies and that mode is WvW. It’s a fun casual mode but it’s not competitive.

To get something competitive, we need something else. My take on it is GvG. A WvW version that is reduced to a scale that players can manage and have a real impact on the final score.

Considerations

It’s a rough general idea. Of course, there would be many things to discuss, change and/or polish but I really think that it would work.

GvGvG should have been what spvp is. This won’t work for an RvRvR mode.

Always found it odd how little guild there are in these wars. But currently maybe 10% of the WvW population is in a large guild?

The First thing that came to my mind reading this was:

This idea sounds like a smaller scale EotM

But that aside, My personal take on this, for many guilds, it’s hard enough to schedule Dual/Fight nights for 10 people, do a raid, set up a PvP tournament, or even do guild missions, none of which take a 3 hour investment.

To expect a guild to be able to set aside the majority of their members, or at least enough to fill a borderland, for a WvW Match, and do so in a time frame that coincided with 2 other guilds. I don’t see that happening.

Maybe, since you are already putty much putting out GvG EotM, Maybe if we just have named maps for EotM (Like we do for WvW) that players can join, like say, 4 base EotM Instances, that guilds/players can directly join and duke it out for 3 hours.

IE:
EotM: Server – Apples to Apples (Red/Green/Blue)
EotM Server – Dolyak Brigade (Red/Green/Blue)
EotM Server – Wander Lost (Red/Green/Blue)
EotM Server – Feel the Roar (Red/Green/Blue)

And that would allow guilds/players to have more controlled timed matches if they wanted to. Less Week Long Saga, More Direct Reward, More sense of being in control of the victory.

As for Glicko Score, Hang it.

If you want something like this you should probably do :
– Keep the 1 week MU
– Make alliance vs alliance. Where guild can group together. Then the ladder is about the alliance and not only 1 guild. You need alliance because you need people…
– What do you do about PUG ? Where do they play ? EOTM only ?

If you want competitive GvG what you need is a map make for that. The arena is too small and limited to HoT customers.
Then you need some ladder with auto MU. Then match can be very short. Something like PvP but with more people, or the bastion mode… You can choose between the 2 mode.
Maybe adapt that to make GvGvG.

I will be more happy with a lot of map, inter connected together and then players are free to make alliance, and those alliance have to take control over territory and hold them. But this can be very hard to balance, because people will just join the biggest team and crush everyone else.

It’s not GvG as you know it today but rather the mix of WvW and PvP. A mini RvR system where guilds replace worlds.

@STIHL I agree with your concerns about the difficulties of organizing an event like that for a guild. Like you said, just organizing guild missions is hard enough. But you know, since it will start every day at the same hour no matter what, you don’t really need to organize it if you don’t want. You just need to hop in as a player when you want and leave when you want.

Sure, if you want to get to the top of the ladder you will need a lot of organization and dedication, but if you are happy to play once a week and be at the bottom of the ladder you can do that too.

I’m just worried that it might be very boring if your opponent doesn’t show up because it’s not their raid night… An idea in progress I guess…
