I recently got this game and read that selecting a server at the start only affects your WvW. This is something I’m interested in and luckily haven’t played a lot since picking for my account. I also heard you can delete your character and repick? So before I fully invest in my character I need to pick the server I’ll likely be stuck on for quite a while.

It comes down to either FA or YB as both are supposedly good for matches in WvW. What are the major differences?

There are no differences.

Guilds transfer servers all the time and players transfer guilds all the time. The result is a arbitrary and futile attempt to label one server when that server may not even have those same players any more.

I can only speak from my experience on YB (since release). We LOVE to defend structures, sometimes using manpower and sometimes tactical usage of siege like ACs, trebs, etc. Recently when we moved upto T2, we received a few open field guilds, who are much appreciated for their efforts. Other than that YB also have number of PvX guilds if you’re looking forward to join one. Our community website: www.yaks-bend.com

As for FA, they definitely have the best coverage in T2 atm, so yeah we can use some more hand to stay competitive in the long run.

Which timezone do you play in? If you are NA, you can end up in hour long queues for 3-4 maps on FA.

A lot of servers have community forums. If you plan on playing WvW a lot, I suggest you contact someone from that server through their forum and try to find out as much information about their WvW environment and WvW guilds as you can before deciding.

No harm in choosing one of these servers and deleting / starting over again (I think 7 day cool down) if it doesn’t fit your needs… YB will also que all 4 on reset NA prime, just not as deep as fa.

Not enough people pick sith when they start. You should go YB its much more fun.

First off, welcome to GW 2. In terms of choosing a server yes it basically mainly affects wvw, there are 24 NA servers divided into 8 tiers for wvw. The wvw experience will vary with each tier, the higher the tier the more people, the more action, the more competitive it is. If your down to deciding on YB or FA, both are good servers. YB has a very nice community though they have had some issues lately with some guilds leaving, so whether or not they continue to be able to stay competitive in t2 is up for debate considering their weaker ocx/sea coverage and the fact that 2 other t2 servers DB and SoS are full. FA has been consistently stable and a staple of t2 for a long time and also has a nice community, they can put up large numbers during NA and have not suffered through the exoduses that other servers in t2 have dealt with.

If choosing between those 2, I would say go FA. Good luck, have fun.

@Dhemize Yeah sounds about right I guess. I don’t even know what I’m looking for and am hoping to find something here I didn’t think of before getting stuck.

@Niloy Thanks. It would be nice to have bases. You guys have a cool logo btw. So far I’m leaning towards YB just because I don’t like playing on teams that outnumber others. It’s not fun or challenging you know? I root for underdogs.

it would also help if you stated what your timezone is because some servers are stronger in certain times then others and might have more active guilds that might appeal to you. It also depends on what your playstyle will be, I dont know if you are new to this kind of game mode, wvw can mean fighting one person to seeing a couple hundred in massive 3way fights. Also it will be a while until you can get the real wvw experience because you will be leveling, although you can still do wvw, and you get upleveled to lvl 80, you will not be fully effective as a lvl 80 is. And this might cause you to get a negative image of wvw because you might find survivability impossible and doing damage difficult. There are alternatives to learn the ropes that will make it easier for you, so dont rush it. And as far as choosing between either of those servers, really either one is good. The main reason I recommend FA, is because it has been traditionally very stable in t2 while most every other server that has been there has collapsed or seasawed back and forth. And it wont stay open for long considering the influx of new players coming into the game.

I would strongly decide on a guild before picking a server. Guilds matter way more than servers in this game. Being in a solid guild will make the game fun even when you’re way outnumbered and unable to do anything in WvW.

If you pick a guild first, be prepared to pay for hefty transfer fees whenever your guild moves servers.

I will say this though: YB has commanders that are the most dedicated to WvW, most (if not all) servers and tiers know of them and their guilds.

We also play the way we want. You won’t be lectured for playing your way, provided that it’s not cheating.

YB rose up because of guild transfers that you denounce in this thread, it became a bandwagon server for whatever reason, and as far as saying YB has the most dedicated commanders and that most if not all tiers and servers know them and their guilds…what? Its fine if you want to speak highly of your server, but seriously statements like that just make it look silly.

Every server has dedicated commanders and players. Unless you’ve played on every single server you can’t really say that yours are the most dedicated.

Saying YB is not the most dedicated tryhard server is kind of insulting. GOOD DAY SIR!

If you are SEA and like to fight while outnumbered, I suggest you check out YB or SoS. SoS recently got a large Chinese guild named GAN. DB has a large amount of SEA time players already and FA recently got three large Chinese guilds. So in terms of who will be outnumbered, most likely that will be YB and SoS. SoS opens up as “Very High” sometime during NA daytime.
