Whenever I try to do the “small group” things like roaming, escorting yaks, and defending camps, I ended up getting trolled by thieves and/or warriors.

Some classes and builds are better for those small groups. I don’t roam enough to know myself, but mesmer’s with all their dang clones seem to have fun in small groups.

Get a focus swap, centaur runes, traveler runes, trait blink, learn to effectively do phase retreat jump swaps…mesmers can be exceptionally fast.

If your server doesnt have a public TS (any 3rd party comms), set one up or transfer. If it does and you dont have to transfer, congratulations. Hop around the open guild channels until you find the right fit. Get comfy, have fun, try different specs and professions. The most fun I have is being in a very organized smallish group of 20-30 and taking on A. server queues B. other organized groups. Roaming is fun but PvP has a 1v1 queue with out the 10 minute re spawn. Doing anything for PPT is boring unless you are with a group doing it every now and then.

Join a decent guild that does organized WvW and uses voice chat, or play a class that excels at roaming. Also, make sure your build is set up for the type of WvW you are playing; if you are playing small group/roaming make sure your build is set up for small group/roaming, and if you are doing large group/zerging make sure your build is set up for that.

I hate weapon swaps. I also hate the idea of spending my life savings so I can be on par with other professions in terms of mobility.

your choices are:

1. pick a mobile class
2. buy gear
3. swap weapons
4. combination of 1-3
5. deal with it

Find a WvW focused guild and run with them… that’s the best thing you can do. And if there’s a specific aspect of WvW that interests you, but your build or class isn’t working for that aspect, you are going to have to be willing to experiment and see how to make it work.

Traveler ruins, speed ruins, class with speed trinket, plenty of mobility out there.

anyways like it was said, find a group of people to run with and it makes a world of difference.

3rd party voice comms make things more fun

Also try using map chat to find other roamers and party up them, most thieves stop being a problem at about 3 party members

Want to have more fun? Forget about escorting yaks, defending camps etc.

Roll a thief and just kill people. It’s the most fun you can have in this game.

Don’t waste your time doing any of that PvE stuff because it is boring. You in WvWvW to fight other people… roam and ruin their day man. And if your focusing on just fighting others it will make you a much better player.

For the warriors, upgrade the camps and get caravan guards for the dolyaks. Adding a few NPCs in to the fight can tilt things in your favor. For camps, I also recommend building some siege weapons — ballistas in particular since they have no minimum range — in among the NPCs for protection. If you spend the points on ballasta mastery, they can do quite a bit of damage and I’ve downed opponents in one shot at close range with them using the spread shot.

The answer for thieves is to invest in some anti-stealth traps. Makes them a sitting duck for 30 seconds and if they stick around, you’ll kill them and if you’ve got siege in a camp, you’ll kill them. Very effective in confined camps with limited access like Pangloss, Danelon, and Rogue’s Quarry because you can almost guarantee they’ll trigger them but they can work in an open field, too, if you know a thief is lurking around. It’s actually kinda entertaining watching thieves do their routine until they figure out that their stealth isn’t working.

Also, you might want to try luring them into the water when roaming. ANet got rid of a lot of the deep water on the Borderlands maps but there is still enough of it to fight in and there is some deep water on the Eternal Battlegrounds map, too. Rangers and Mesmers, for example, are very effective and hard to kill underwater and Warriors and Thieves aren’t nearly as impressive underwater as they are on land.

Thieves by themselves are annoying, its when you have a small group of them or whole fricking guilds of them that they become dangerous.

I found a relatively small but active WvW guild with people I enjoyed hanging out with. Even if we’re not having a lot of fights because we’re defending the BL, we still have a lot of fun. And when we do find those fights, its a complete blast.

Find good people to play with as a team and get on voice comms. It makes the game completely different.
