. The other day I saw 5 players go down when a single Elementalist cast a Meteor Shower on a zerg.

The other day, i saw 20 players run away after being hit with barrage + Sigil of Torment + Keen Edge + Spirit of the Sun + Sharpening Stone + Sharpening Edges.

Meteor Shower is very strong indeed, no doubt about it. However it only do damage, and maybe, just maybe you can add some burning procs if you spec for it (waste of trait points imo).

Difference is, while your Meteor Shower does say 3k/hit against a paper enemy. A rangers Barrage does 2.2k raw damage + 600hp/sec condition damage for the next 7 seconds (if not cleansed).

Burst wise, elementalist comes out on top due to sheer raw damage. Extend the duration of the attacks and ranger comes out on top due to consistently high DPS. To be frank, i’d rather hit for 2k all day every day, then hit 5k for 3 seconds and then wait for the CD to wear off. Truth be told, if you actually go full glass on a ranger, with careful aiming and positioning, you can do more damage to multiple targets then any other profession can hope to do in the same setting.

I just play ranger in WvW, and srsly it rocks.
I run the RRR build with apothecary armor and trinckets, sigils of geomancy + healing.
For roaming I use sword+torch and axe+dagger, the pets are wolf and fern hound.
For zerging just grab a LB, Rangers are great in Wvw and pvp maybe they suck in pve but this is another story.

I think what would seem convincing that rangers are good is not stories from people who play them but stories from people who fight them.

I used to play a hybrid beastmaster with shortbow / greatsword and wolf / panther. I had a lot of fun back in the day and I very seldom lost a duel. I often even went 1v2 with great success, and with careful timing, I even won some duels from down state. I stopped playing it after several unwarranted nerfs. Pet swap haste stomp was removed, pet damage was reduced, healing spring used to give a lot of vigor through traits, and range of shortbow was severely reduced.

Is that character and that build still capable of dueling and roaming? Sure. But I just started to dislike how every patch seemed to nerf ranger for reasons I could not understand. Also I don’t play ranger much these days because I grew very tired of Anet never addressing the issue of how easy it is to kite my pets. If they would attack on the move, things would be different, and all these balancing changes could make sense. But since any enemy with perma swiftness can avoid 90% of my pets damage…. what warrants continual nerfs?

All I play is Ranger small man and solo roaming and I dare say I hold my own vs most…

Several accomplished Rangers on the forums, if you can play a Ranger effectively would it not be easier to play the more synergized classes equally effectively?

I personally choose to play the Ranger because its a challenge…

Xorus, Feax to name a couple are quite kick kitten Rangers…you may well change the negative perspective if you run into one of them ; )

1200 range max. Strike one, two, three and you’re out. Also, traited staff has 180 AOE, which means it has a maximum range of 1290. Dealing 324 damage with 0.85 power-coefficient.
Longbow AA is 1800 range max (manual fire) traited. Dealing 332 damage with 0.9 power-coefficient.
Math…math…math…. at range, ele loses hands down. Why? Because ele fire staff 1 is actually slower in rate of fire, range is shorter, damage is less, and just one more thing. the AOE is capped at 3 players. Piercing arrows can go through 5.

Sorry Ather, but you need to look up on rangers a bit more i guess.

You will never hear those stories. Because any self respecting player that does not play ranger will NEVER admit that he/she lost to a ranger in the first place. No matter how crushing their defeat.

^ haha so true. Back when I was roaming ranger a lot, and I would pwn a thief, or some cheese build, I always wondered “Do you think he will tell his friends he just got slapped by a ranger?”

So your only value is the max range, something impossible to maintain in an active game? Well then obviously Ranger wins since no class has a 1500 range weapon. And you’re completely ignoring the fact that Ele is the highest DPS class in the game? Come on dude can you be any more of a biased appologist?

Then again the fact is that while using staff, they are undoubtly the highest DPS profession. Due to their AOE coverage. However at the same time, to obtain that DPS, their survivability goes down the drain. A ranger can maintain high survivability compared to damage output.
Also, dude, how conceited can you be? Warriors, Engineers even thieves has a 1500 range attack or weapon. However out of those, ranger has the best long range DPS.
Another thing we are blatantly ignoring here is pet. While most pets are useless, utilizing pets such as the Jungle Stalker with its might, or the Red Moa with its fury will drastically increase DPS once more.

Then again, while i am biased towards the ranger, i also DO have an ele that iv’e been leveling for ages.

Ele has perma fury and 5+ might on their own as well. So those benefits from the pets are meaningless. While the coefficient and speed are less on the Ele, the Ele has the benefit of their other skills actually adding to their dps in a meaningful manner. Didn’t bother bringing it up because you wanted only to compare AA (which Ele still wins once you factor in traits even if you assume max range instead of less than 600).

Both classes will end up being 2 shot by a thief playing this way so survivability tanking or not isn’t really an issue. I’d bet money that most thieves would target a Ranger before they target an Ele though. And the Ele still provides enormous utility with the staff whereas the Ranger provides next to nothing.

Look… the Ranger isn’t useless. Not even I’m trying to say it’s a lost cause. I’m simply saying the class doesn’t have enough in the wins column to offset the cons. Especially when we’re dealing with small/mid size groups as opposed to roaming and dueling.

They are not terrible, but they are not really strong at anything either other than having the longest reaching attack with the longbow. The pet is a negative more than anything in WvW, it is dead almost instantly and unfortunately counts as DPS for you. If you could somehow stow the pet and add its spirit to your bow damage it would be nice.

Na, it isn’t hard to say a Ranger killed my Warrior the other day, my Warrior isn’t set up for 1v1 and the Ranger was. Rangers are great solo, the problem comes in with group play. Rangers go down faster than fast when focused. So, how does anyone say in a Zerg, I killed 4 rangers, who knows 3/4’rs of the time what your killing when 20 folks drop around you. My ranger is bunker built, and in zerg work survivability was poor, especially if I tried Melee, either GS or Sword/torch or Axe/Horn.
