Q:

Remove skins and other customization.

Each enemy player would show up as a default (or even random) character of whatever race they are. Their armor would be the color of their Borderlands for the week. Their armor would be the default level 80 armor for its type and their weapons would be the default skin for its type.

There you go, 1/2 to 2/3 of the information about each character has been removed and no longer has to be sent for each player.

Why not (other than Fashion Wars 2 of course)?

Or they could pull a Kill Zone and have low res textures the farther away the object/player, its not like we’ll see every spec on that armor when its barely in draw distance anyhow.

They had this in Aion, it worked reasonably well.

Assign the character/race/class a higher priority than what exact armor they’re wearing or what cast/action they’re currently performing (what animation). That way you just have many unanimated bland characters standing about somewhere while the lower-priority information about these characters (custom. looks, armor/weapon, animations) is pushed to the clients which are updated on-the-fly.

Sounds simple, probably there’s more to it than that though I’m sure the devs have already thought of these or other approaches and have decided against them for good reason.
