You don’t, you give them an option. Run X build for the good of the guild or find a new guild.

Pretty much this.

If you’re trying to become more of a “hardcore” guild, you need to tell your guild that you want to become a more hardcore WvW guild and what that entails.

In case you don’t know what that entails, here you go.
1) Proper group comps (X amount of which classes, you can figure that out.)
2) Proper builds to go with those group comps. You can also figure that out with simple Google searches if you don’t know.
3) Tell them what classes you DON’T need or how many of which ones you do. Example, I generally tell my guilds that we don’t need rangers or thieves since they’re both near useless in larger scales fights. One mesmer is pretty much all you’d need, the rest you’ll probably want 2-5 of though.

You won’t “force” anyone to do anything, but if you want to force your guild in to being a more hardcore guild, you need to recruit people with your same goals.

A good leader will inspire people to want to be better at something, you’ll never do that if you think you’ll force anyone to do anything.

You don’t. That’s a good way to run them out of WVW. What you want to do is have “fun runs” where your entire guild uses a single profession. This will show them the basic mechanics of said profession and may even make them interested in picking it up in the next serious event. We recently did one called “Perma-Moist” where just about everyone was running a staff ele… people enjoyed it, and even a few said they might consider using a staff ele in the future.

One thing I do is have one of our raid nights designated as “alt night”. Guild members are allowed to play whatever class they want or bring an uplevel or run some alternate build on their main class. That helps them feel like they aren’t stuck to playing one class all the time. We adjust how we play on those nights because group comp goes out the window.

Haven’t found a way. The two sides are too polarizing and people are frequently too stubborn to realize what team based play entails.

Even if you show them videos, give them the math etc.. it comes down to usually 1 thing. That persons desire. It takes a special group of people to be willing to have multiple viable characters and builds. The odds of finding them in a casual guild is about as good as hitting the lottery.

Forcing people to do anything in a videogame sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I can see only three options:

  1. if the group you are playing with is decently skilled, you can probably find some build and class setup that will work for you (even if it’s not “optimal”) to play together as a group
  2. or… you manage to convince them that running the meta builds/classes is better
  3. or… you find another group willing to try either option 1 or 2
