Now im not sure how other servers are but IoJ players love their PvE…me not so much, but there has been countless times that I have ran into Lvl 80 players with some stacked gear that didnt even know what WvWvW was. They didnt realize why they get extra health during the week (baffling but true). Also when I go into in LA and try and get regular players into W3 I usually get laughed at and told its point less because there is no reward.

Its sad but true, victory and a good fight is not enough for some players. So my idea is that why not increase the rate of rare drops in W3? nothing to extreme but enough to get regular players in and get them to stop whining about repair costs.

One drawback I can see from this is players just going in to farm NPC’s but I know that if this was something that anet implemented, I would lead some people into those caves and kill the farmers :P

soo I ask you GW2 community, what would you do to get PvErs into WvW?

Have the bigger guilds stop WvWing for a week. Go on strike. Make them notice that there truly IS a reward for WvWing, and that reward is passed on to their PvEing butts!!

I was a staunch pver, hated hated hated anything pvp …. But I’m also a completionist and had to get 100% map done …. Which meant going into WvW maps.

What made me stay was A: my loyalty to my server … TC has some of the most fiercely loyal players out there, which leads to server pride and a sense of duty …. But the more important reason I stayed was B: the leadership. I’m sure other servers have fine commanders … But ours tend to have the utmost patience with newcomers, take the time to explain why you should do this or not do that, and encourage us all to rally together.

Now I make sure I put in at least a couple hours a day and I love WvW!

If I hadn’t witnessed this kind of leadership on map chat I likely would have ninja’d my vistas and pois and not returned. I think a lot of servers miss this golden opportunity as new folks enter the WvW map to get their 100%.

To be honest I don’t think the buffs were all that enticing. I certainly don’t care about it when I do fractals or whatever. And if by PvEers you mean people who does not like to fight other players, basically nothing you can do will make them want to WvW.

What WvW needs is a purpose, and it’s not lucrative loot drops or whatever (keep the farmers in PvE or they’ll flood the forums with 9000 duplicate threads when they get farmed themselves).

If you didn’t have the buffs from WvW, I am positive that you will notice the difference.

The buffs reset every week. We all see it. Difference as in the number of max HP change by like 1000? That’s not even one hit from a minion.

Re the NPC issue have better drop rates be simply on player kills not NPC kills.

As a PvE minded IoJ player, I have a very hard time adjusting to the demanding reaction speed/strategy etc needed for PvP. It is a different mindset. I still get in there occasionally, but rarely feel like more than just another number following the herd. And caught alone I’m more often than not screwed.

WvW results support PvE progress. I’d like a way that I, as a PvE minded player can also support my realm in a meaningful way. It would be nice if there was a way to make the world feel more united, with both PvE and WvW contributing, but I can also understand the complexity of such a concept.

Granted most of you can point out the obvious solution “grow some PvP balls” but sometimes its just not that simple.

I think WvW really needs to offer better rewards than what it currently does. I came from another MMO which had most, if not all the crafting resources in the main battlegrounds. I think if the devs implement something similar, then we might be able to get more PvErs into WvW.

Do you really want pvers in pvp? Do you really want that mindset out there of I need a carrot on the stick all the time? The only rewards should be equal gear to pve. Do you really want pve players doing something else out there other than helping the server fight their opponents? They’d be taking up valuable spots for real pvpers. Especially on those reset nights. Putting more bodies out there under the wrong mindset does NOT generate better pvp and sometimes will make it worse.

i think recruiting can be a crucial part to WvW, especially in regards to coverage time. i myself am mainly a PvE-er but when i get most of my “PvE” goals out of the way i plan to WvW more seriously right now, i delve in every so often and try to help out and learn as much as i can. i’ve seen people call out in LA asking for help in WvW. which i think can be helpful. however, what even MORE important is what happens on the BL’s and in EB after these daring PvE-ers decide to venture into PvP land as a server. do you remain by their side, telling them what to do? or do you just rush off and do your thing? not telling you to hold their hands, but give them a rundown perhaps when you’re calling out. explain the situation. RP a little even or at least give a background story. at least, THAT would intrigue me.

imagine if you convinced someone to go in. and they eventually DO. but then are just left alone. first time being in WvW< it can be daunting as you’ve no idea what to do, where to go.. so that just turns them off. especially if after someone invites them they’r ejust left there. so stick by them and affect a small group at a time, instead of just getting pure “numbers”. you can offer a show tell session in LA. announce it before hand and those interested can come listen and you can educate them. and hopefully, when they get in, and follow you and help you complete objectives and experience pretty darn fun PvP, they’ll be willing to come back. and through that, they’ll tell their friends ideally. and word gets out that your server and WvW is fun. and more than jsut about the rewards.

not saying that you don’t do this already, but i feel it helps. and in case you needed a reminder. ; )))

These are good points, and when I do have my tag up I try to throw humor in while explain why we are doing something. as for the show and tell, we have an aussie guild that does that and Drgn is going to be setting something up like that for NA timezone…we just forget a lot xD

Edit: I’ve gone to lengths to shout in Lion’s Arch about the Mist Wars and how every sword helps! It helps when your borderland is on the verge of collapse during off hours.

I am sure if I really wanted to I could dramatically boost TC’s WvW participation with some well written messages to get people interested in dying for a cause.

Also, trying to recruit WvW-ers from your opponents in the upcoming matchup isn’t the way to do it [DRGN].

I agree that WvW isnt as attractive as other areas. As already stated the rewards are very few, and the repair costs are high and very very regular.

Thanks to bots you no longer get xp or karma from running dolyaks, and getting dolyaks to keeps is the most important thing in WvW! But as there is no reward for doing so anymore noone wants to do that.

Anet needs to do more on fixing problems than simply removing them! If things continue and they just remove an exploitable issue, WvW will just die as noone will want to do it.

Macros, you can use them as long as they arent macros.
Remember to buy the officially endorsed GW2 Steel Series Keyboard, it supports macros!
WvW, we only care if it affects the servers we play on.

I’m sitting here trying to think of ways to entice others into WvW, but in it’s current state, I just can’t do it. Class balance is completely out of whack with Thieves destroying you in a second. You basically have to build for swiftness, ranged DPS and condition removal lest you be left behind snared and bleeding with your sword uselessly hanging in your hand. The rewards compared to PvE are paltry at best. It’s a complete money sink for most people.

I just don’t know what to tell people. On occasion, sure, you’ve got epic battles. But mostly you’re either zerging, getting zerged, or attacking a wall, gate, or waiting for a camp supervisor’s immunity buff to drop. Personally, being a DAoC vet from way back, I really looked forward to WvW. I’m a casual player due to family life, so only have about 3200 kills, give or take, but I’m out every night I’m on. Sadly it’s been pretty disappointing the entire time. I haven’t quite gotten myself to stop the habit, but I’m getting close.

More to the point I can tell you what is putting players of WvWvW.
1. Lack of rewards compaired to expenditure
2. Extremely low FPS and lag when high numbers of players are fighting.
3. The exploits of Culling and AoE percentage of being hit
4. It’s viewed purely as a Karma farm.
5. the over reliance of Zerg mentality to achieve anything of merit.

WvW is essentially PvX.

TRUE PvP is found in the Heart of the Mists.

WvW is PvP as much as anything else, the entire point of it is competiting against other players / teams, that is the very definition of PvP, there is no player vs enviroment in it, the “PvE” elements provide zero competion for a player, they are all inconquestional as they are balanced on the basis of other players being there to provide the difficulty, PvP does not mean player combat.

Best way i can think of is something that was talked about by my guild for a bit. Make the Fractals dungeon (or any other highend popular dungeon) only accessible to the leading server in WvW. It can be reset daily so that one server doesn’t have it for the whole week.. This would make a lot of peope that do fractals have an incentive to help out in WvW. Jumping puzzles should be removed altogether too, along with vistas.

That’s just silly. You’d be cutting out two realms of players from content. Think of cases where a particular server dominates, or one simply cannot stand up to the others.
Technically you would also be welcoming ‘trading’ of winning position with this method. Loose example; this happened in WoW cataclysm with the prison island. Horde and Alliance teams had organized it so they would lose/win for their later benefit. Of course this isn’t the same conditions, but it fits.

And on another note, something nagging me at the moment is a certain attitude I feel around here;
Just because you (anyone, I don’t mean this to seem a direct attack.) want to label yourself as a WvW player, doesn’t give you the right to start taunting and belittling those who do not get the same enjoyment from something as you do.

One point I’d like to drive home is that I have avoided joining any ‘WvW’ guilds so far.
I do my research into possible circles of people to become friends with. Occasionally I have noticed anti-PvE player remarks, I’d imagine not usually made on purpose. But they are still around. These put me off joining such groups. Sometimes for fear they would not agree with or allow me to enjoy what I want also.
I don’t mean to target anyone with this so please don’t misunderstand, but more let it be known in hopes to aid your efforts. Some of us may feel targeted or discriminated.

Instead of alienating PvE players, time and effort should be finding ways to introduce and welcome them to contribute towards a servers progression.
And in this I don’t only mean currently existing ways, but possibly evolutions to Guild Wars 2, both in WvW and PvE that could be propositioned to Anet.

Hopefully I haven’t upset anyone with my post but rather hope it may help in your efforts.

The best way to entice more players to WvW is to have it be more rewarding and more fun. Just like any game, and in all reality that is Anets job not ours.

We were all PvE at one point in time. But I have to say unless they come on their own, we don’t really want to drag them there.

What I see happening (yes right now) is that skilled WvWer’s get kind of irritated/resentful that they basically have to baby sit these players and watch them make all kinds of silly decisions (often with a bad attitude). But on the otherside PvE players get resentful that they are not taught well enough or appreciated or even more so talked down to. Most do not want to be told what to do, so they continue to do the wrong things.

So like I said, it only works if they come on their own with interest in learning or playing.

It would be nice if we had a system that was not so heavily influenced by large numbers of generally unskilled players so we wouldn’t have to worry about filling our maps with randoms.

We may notice it, but will we care? I feel quite confident that if this thread had been started in GW2 Discussion forum, you’d have PvE players stating that they’d prefer the buff system be removed from the game, as they don’t want their play to be influenced by what’s happening in PvP (Or PvX if you prefer). I do WvW because I enjoy it. Yes, I think increasing the rewards would be good idea, but I think that about the game across the board. I don’t believe that the buffs provide any meaningful incentive for PvE players to get into WvW. There clearly are rewards that will encourage PvE players to at least load the map, as we have seen with 100% world completion; I wonder how effective that strategy has really been though. We don’t have the data on this, but it would be interesting to know how many players actually stick around and how many just get their POIs and vistas and then leave and never look back.

Frankly, I think all that can really be done is to encourage them to check it out by stressing how much FUN it is. Any enticement that begins to feel like coercion will only breed resentment, and I can tell you just by reading these forums that that’s how some players feel about the 100% world completion requirements and the monthly achievements (I’m not making a judgement on that, only stating what I’ve read). Appeals to a sense of duty or even worse, obligation, are unlikely to work, nor in my opinion, should they. I completely agree with @Skribbl’s post on this topic, and would add to it that there is absolutely NO obligation for any player to play the game in a way they don’t enjoy. WvW is in no way inherently “more important” than any other part of the game.

When I made the move from pve to wvw, I was an engineer. The costs for repairs from death after death from thieves and wars mostly, became a major concern. This would not be so bad if I was able to actually contribute, and get some kills myself. Sadly, this eventually taught me that the only chances I had with that kittened class was to run in the zergs, or run artillery. Learned to run, rather than fight. I understand there is some learning curve, but being rofl-stomped by /laughing invaders endlessly is seriously demoralizing. With exploits, culling/stealth, lack of emphasis on defense, and high emphasis on mobility. Some classes are just not balanced in wvw. So, I’m running a guardian, and raising my thief and soon mesmer to play. Ele/nec/war/ranger will be along soon.
Outmanned buff on player team means “money sink active”. Repair, siege, upgrades will be made, and the zerg will usually win.
Outmanned in particular does nothing useful vs the zergs or the costs.
Thick-skinned is a requirement to keep going, but people that have lives outside of wvw, may look at this as a waste of their time and money.
I fully expect the L2P comments to follow, but the wvw meta is not that hard, it’s the unbalanced aspects of this that are of concern. Zerging has become the dominant play-style. With a guardian, I do pay my way, but running around solo is still not going to pay off.

How to get PvE’ers into WvW: By Commander Bird Song.

1) Acquire a large stick (staff may be used)

2) Find a large sack

3) Fill sack with rocks

4) Write the words FREE LOOT on bag

5) Place bag on stick

6) Run around Lions Arch and then through a WvW Asuran Portal.

7) Repeat until you have a queue.

PvE players will join WvW to do three things: to get map completion, to get monthly achievement and to get gift of battle if they want to make a legendary.

That is our chance to “get them hooked”. Be patient and don’t be rude to them – we have all been noobs in WvW. I know I have tried to take supply from camps and leave them at the supply depot in keep…

To me personally the biggest draw to WvW is that it is the biggest challenge in the game. Battle of skill and wits against people from other servers – really epic battles to either capture or hold heavily fortified keeps. Figuring out that one person can make a difference between victory and defeat… Also, I found a great guild through WvW and met a lot of great people there.
If you manage to get new people or passer-by who just wants to get 50 kills for monthly to appreciate what is so great about WvW you will maybe get a great new player.

Some thoughts:
Guild recruiting banners with some benefit/ bling for both?? (more for or just for the recruit?)
A better “Outmanned” buff that has a multiplier for new to WvW players?

double the amount of achievements available only in wvw, make them 3/4 as hard to get.
yay!

chance for drop for some crazy cool skin that is only found on keep lords or whatnot

outmanned buff should negate repair costs from deaths while buff is on u

soo I ask you GW2 community, what would you do to get PvErs into WvW?

It’s down to reward to time and effort spent. Right now there is, as you’ve pointed out, little to zero reason for a PvE minded player to touch PvP.

Since this game is base on a horizontal gear system to some degree. A big boost for fresh meat to PvP would be to give the best, and I really do mean the best looking armor and weapon skins to PvP as rewards. This should be across the board for SPVP and WvW. Hell if Anet made the Cash Shop makeover kit a reward from PvP Glory or Badges, WvW and SPVP would be flooded by care bears.

The same way you get WvW’ers into PvE.
Simply put the best gear in the game in WvW and watch the attendance soar.

This should have been part of the equation. Release of content where best gear was attainable via both PvE and WvW.

How many PvE events /patches have there been ? Seems like NPCwars2 …

Now I have serious doubts if the player attrition could be reversed in a meaningful way.

A simple solution is you only get the PVE rewards if you actually participate in WvW.
It doesn’t have to be anything that difficult (maybe player kills/completing events) that they have to do say,every 48 hours to get the bonus’s.
It’d help numberswise and as most of ye know,you can go into WvW just to use the portal and end up still there two hours later :P

PVE-ers want rewards, so emphasise how easy xp/karma/coin comes in WvW?
Also, trying to recruit WvW-ers from your opponents in the upcoming matchup isn’t the way to do it [DRGN].

Recruitment from other servers is something that Drgn has done well before I joined Drgn and ascended its ranks…we also were recruting from FA well before this upcomming match

WvW isnt fun anymore :(

The whole WvWvW is already pve, my warrior who now adjusted for team buff/aoe stun can tank easily Thief D/P build of the month. If there a random died by them which quite often happen. Then I considering them a pve already. And my character is considering quite a child play.

Better rewards/XP.

I’m not saying make it rediculous, but alot of PvE ppl get discouraged. Maybe if they could make some decent coin, a kitten decent drop rate, and level up with relative ease they may give it a try.

You can get xp fairly easilly depending on the situation in WvW but other times you get very little xp/coin/drops.

Increase the drop rate and xp for killing players, increase the XP for defending, and increase the loot drop rate for pretty much everything.

One at a time.

Your standard player will go into WvW, have no idea what to do, run towards the nearest objective, then die horribly.

Rinse, repeat two or three more times.

Said player now has lost money on broken armor and has nothing to show for it.

However, if you bring said player with, say, a small group or even just a roaming buddy, you can show that person how fun WvW can be, how to play, tips and tricks, etc. They’ll be more likely to return.

Alternatively, a game wide movement to encourage players to not be kitten. I know it’s hard—I oftentimes see one server standing around and congratulating each other on 10v1ing someone, or a maxed geared thief dancing when they ambush a level adjusted character and kill ‘em in like two hits. No, wait, not hard, downright impossible, since servers can’t even keep outright cheaters from doing it. Nevermind.

So yeah, just play with other people not exclusively in your guild, I suppose.

PS Making WvW rewards not-crap would help too.

As a “PVE’er” I’ve set foot in WvWvW precisely once… I had no idea what was going on, put out a map query that was met by 3 “L2P” type responses, ran off to the nearest objective (for lack of any other ideas), died immediately/horribly, as per Lina’s post above, and then promptly left! I’d like to get involved, but, as an introduction to something that’s supposed to be “fun”… It really wasn’t

I like the idea, and I’m willing to learn, but my previous experience, reading through various threads and seeing terms like “care bear” bandied about, as well as a perceived need to be fully kitted out in exotics (getting there, but a way off, yet) doesn’t help matters

I’m on Gandara… If someone wants to show me the ropes I’m all for it!

Overall, I like this game…
But I’m concerned about where it seems to be heading!
Distinctly less shiny than it once was
