How to use a thief.
Best use would be to kill, then toss their rotting corpse into a treb and launch it into an enemy keep or tower.
Killing overextended targets and pushing other with scorpion
I like to use my balisk and devorer venoms on the opponent when they are in front of one of my servers warriors.
Even better with the trick shot on short bow and traited for extra venom strike.

In large group fights thieves tend to struggle quite a bit, so if you run smaller groups and often take on larger groups there is one thing a thief excels at:
stomping people
ressing peoplethat should be the thiefs sole purpose.
A good thief will be finishing targets off or in the middle of their group sowing confusion and panick.
My guild was running 5 and we came across a small zerg of players (15-20) I was the only thief and basically I was seperate from the rest in the enemies back lines.
It works wonders since people tend to panick when they start dying on both sides.
Eventually tho the zerg doubled or more and wiped us…..we dropped a kitten ton of em and I was the only one to live

If they’re running 1v1 Assassin-style builds, sure.
You can’t really complain about being weak in large scale combat if you’re specced away from it. There are several viable thief setups that work great in large-scale combat, they just give up some of that 1v1 burst to do so.

I use D/D in 1v1 fights sure, but in groups or during a siege or defense it is ALL about the shortbow. They can nerf D/D to complete uselessness and I will still have great use in WvW on my thief. More times than I can remember a downed enemy starts to get ressed by 2 teammates, then its good ol’ Haste + Trick shot spam = 3 downed players.

Thanks for the great detail in explaining whats wrong with thieves,No one should be able to do this.Killing of many enemy’s while being invisi is the most unfair thing ive seen in an mmo yet,Whats the point in giving all the players all these downed skills when they are utterly worthless when a thief finish you off invisi anyways ? its close to “hacking” ( dont take it that serious ) imo.Devs gave thiefs a legal godmode hack,lol

The best uses for thief in large group fights are thier shared stealths, combo fields, blast and whirl finishers, Caltrops and Scorpion Wire. So stealth res/stomp, setting up stealth bombs, mass blinds and the ability to force enemies to over extend.

I could not disagree more… They can play high survivability, condi burst, condi outlast, damage burst, team support (Venom share, Stealth res, Shadow Refuge, etc.), separator (Basilisk, Scorpion wire, Surprise shot), oh and they have the most spam-able blast with shortbow in the game. I could go on, but no need.

We found running thieves in small groups to be frustrating. It was easy enough to down most of a zerg but the ae and things like guardian knockback in downed state made it difficult to stomp people.
Our philosophy now is try to find ways to get burst out while still running tanky specs/classes and its been working a lot better.

Excellent single target burst with melee. Excellent ranged AoE with shortbow. Can kill seige on walls. Excellent stomper. Excellent reviver. Excellent escapability. Excellent mobility.

You need to re-read the post. No where did I say I was killing people from 100% to 0% and then promptly stomping them.
No what I said was finish people off (this means they were either downed or very injured when engaged). That is what the thief was developed to do.
If your talking about a stealth stomp than you need to ditch your class envy b/c ele’s can mist stomp, Wars can invuln stomp, etc. Those are tons more effective than stealth stomping.
Stealth stomping is weaker than some other stomps. What makes it good is the frequency at which it can be done via stealth utilities and cnd.

Right, a skill with no cool down and that has a good chance of avoiding damage through stealth is totally worse than something that lets you stomp one guy and then wait for cooldowns.

Wars can invul stomp ? Explain please,because you need stability + endure pain for that,wich you have already popped up in battle and their most likely still in cd to be used when the player is down,irrelevant and thoughtless comment.Thieves stealth finishers are OP,done deal,you can disagree all you want but your just lying to yourself.

Which is why I’d never want you on my team. If everyone did the same, you’d get screwed if one of your people gets downed and stomped which would rally all of the people you left behind for “others” to deal with.

I hate thieves, but this is exactly why a good thief is essential in any small roaming wvw group, if you don’t have anyone stomping then you lose as soon as one of your allies is stomped.

Because you shadow refuged and ran awya, thiefes best friend
With my guardian I can probably kill 10 thieves all together, 1 hit takes out half their hp. Also I noticed that most thieves use backstab and then heartseek, however if that doesn’t kill you they have no idea what to do and end up shadow refuge and run or just die. It’s so fun to open with #2 hammer skill, then #3, then #4 and then k0 XD
Get a good clump in down state and cluster bomb it, never mind the stomping
You can also totally lock down a supply route with a small group of thieves. Stealth in, burst down yak, vanish. Simple. Gamechanging.
