Q:

Hi trolls,

As a regular Eve Online player, I was wondering how, in the current state of the WWW, one could play Guild Wars 2 in such a way that it would mimic some gameplay features of Eve Online.

I’m having a hard time thinking about some features being available in Eve and not in GW2 because GW2 is definitely not sandboxed.. Maybe the question is : what parts of GW2 are inspired, in your opinion, from the ‘sandbox’ context ?

I get the impression that winning at Eve is all about winning the metagame, but I haven’t played it. I guess in GW2 that would amount to doing things like dropping spies in their voice comms / server transfer chars on a second copy of GW2 to snoop their team chat; spawn / jumping puzzle camp your opponents until they get demoralized and log off then cap all of their towers, etc…

zastari : yeah. Good ideas there. Do you think some guilds are willing to do that ? I guess the problem is, most of your ideas are considered metagame in Eve while considered griefing behavior in GW2 (and I would understand, as these two games don’t have the same target). What good meta-game can be done around GW2 which doesn’t involve something banneble here (while not bannable in eve ?)

I play on Maguuma where we have a big population from Eve’s Goonfleet. I know some groups that definitely keep spies on enemy servers and watch their comms. The problem with GW2 is that they make it too easy for you to cross the line from metagaming to exploiting, so it’s hard to draw a boundary and they have to be ridiculously stern about “exploiting” to stop it. For example, we had someone come to our server who had the same guild tag as one of our opponent servers, walk up to the orb at north, grab it and then transport it to an enemy garrison. Situations like that tell you that ANet didn’t create this game with enough metagame in mind since they left open obvious holes like that. Because of that, they’re probably going to get rid of most of the fun ways to grief/metagame people since it’s way too easy to take it too far. It’s a shame because I really like that side of tactics.

Well, in your orb example… I find it great we can do that. That really mean the WWW is broken somehow. In Eve you are supposed to do that if you can do it (That’s why some people just LOVE the eve gameplay and metagame).

But I do agree that adding friendly fire in GW would be great, that would prevent such things to happen, or at least make it very very fun to be able to do it without anyone from your own team killing you..

Does that make GW a carebear game ?

Eve is nothing like Guild Wars 2. Not sure why you’re compared or trying to incorperate ideas from Eve into Guild Wars 2, it would never work.

Where have you read that EVE is the same as GW ?

About friendly fire, in my opinion that would be super awesome. Cry babies would just be punished and care bears as well. Orb stealers also What means ‘going so well’ in your opinion ? Don’t you think some guys like games that are a little bit more open to gameplay than running and zerging like headlesss chickens ? The issue is that WWW leaves no place to indivisual gameplay. Want to take a camp alone ? well good luck if the guild master is buffed. Well, what else ? Jumping puzzle ? and, after that..what ?

Maybe not an ‘open fire’ but the ability to declare war on someone from your server would open miryads of possibilities in new gameplay as well as infinite tears !! I would love it.

Friendly fire would require full class rebalancing — it would render most AoE all but useless and completely change the dynamics around keep / tower sieges. You might as well just delete the Ranger profession. ;-P

Personally — I loathe the use of meta tactics to change the battle. So I’m glad it’s about 99% likely you will never get your wish. If you really want that style of play so badly, I suggest you choose a different MMO — I don’t know…maybe…EVE Online.

More importantly, if you are running around zerging like a “headless chicken”, you aren’t all that successful in WvW unless your opponents are completely incompetent. Yeah, zergs dominate siege on towers and keeps. But supply and efficiency / speed are the real key to dominance between two (or three) forces of near equal strength. My experience has been that in order to really rock a map in WvW, you have to use at least two zergs and coordinate their activity really well. I.e., expect where the zerg needs to be before it becomes obvious that’s where it needs to be, not run willy nilly attacking things with a different color icon. That way you conserve time and take minor objectives efficiently on the way to the major battles.

The best commanders repeatedly display an ability to hear a call for help in defense, first take a camp (or two), resupply the zerg and arrive just in time to wipe the siege attack right before it succeeds. They are thinking two or three fights ahead, not responding to the latest “OMG zerg is here and going to take the tower! Everyone come help!” Headless chickens need not apply.

I would remove the graphics engine and make everyone look like a square. Then instead of grass and trees, I’d put stars. Instead of 10 button UI, I’d flood the screen with NASA-like information boxes.

it would work by forming uncanny alliances with other servers. other than that the game mechanics are simply different and some things you can get away with eve are considered exploits and violations in GW2. you can’t play checkers in a chess kind of way but you can have a poker face in either. In the end, it’s all about how we interact with each other with the given mechanics. IE – agreeing to have an alliance with an opposing server to take out a common enemy, then suddenly flipping the script and taking their property when they help, but in the end that would backfire because they would then inadvertently ally with your enemy by wanting revenge and focusing their attacks on you along with the enemy.

Some simple ideas from Eve that can improve WvW:

Fleet Finder: an interface within a guild to find open groups, instead of spamming guild chat to see if anyone has an opening.

Broadcasting system: we have minimap waypoint and John Madden drawing capabilities, but no basic party or squad notifications. Simple things like, Hold fire, enemy located here, OMG I’M IN STRUCTURE, etc. Anything to clear up chat coms in an efficient way.

Aggression Timer: so tired of people rage logging when downed. In Eve, if you have aggression, your ship will stay in space for a few minutes if you log off so you can be killed like the coward you are.

Improved Target calling: In Eve, there was the option for primary, secondary, and tertiary targets.

As for playing the game like Eve? I don’t know. How about having a coordinated guild that can make proper maneuvers to destroy the enemy, despite being out numbered? That is the epitome of Eve.

Yeah don’t know how I’d play it like Eve to be honest but I can see a few things that would improve WvW from Eve. Most are already listed in here but to say them again…

- Using the acronym HTFU in every other forum post
- Teach people what “check check” and “battle comms” mean on TS
- Allow fleet command style skills and rework the entire squad system
- Allow proper target calling and switching
- Log out timer
- Add reinforcement timers to keeps
- Introduce some form of diplomacy tools across servers

What can be done like in Eve ummm…

- Mesmer portal like a Titan bridge?
- RvB fleet fights aka zerg vs zerg?
- Sov upgrades but only for small localised systems aka keeps, towers etc.

YOU KNOW THERE AIN’T NO REST FOR THE WICKED, TILL WE CLOSE OUR EYES FOR GOOD.

well, there is one thing that could help a little ….sometimes when commanders aren’t on…it’s hard to tell where the zerg is at …..

It would be nice to have some option to join a zerg without a commander …

Ie – there would be an option in join party section ….Zerg A – Zerg B – Zerg C

each zerg group can have say a max of 30 members ..this way when there are no commanders on – we can at least form some sort of organized group – this would certainly help the lower populated servers that wouldn’t bother spending 100g in a low tier wvw match.

This is also my problem with having commander zerglings ….. when you see 3 commanders in one keep fighting together ..that is a mis-message that the entire server should be at that location ……this is a horrible tactic as you cover your kittens and leave your face wide open.

An Option to join zerg a b or c would counter this logistical flaw – brought about by the human nature of wanting to show off your commander status than actually perform like a capable commander.

If GW2 was like EvE, there would be no determined buff near entry gates. Certain classes would be able to get permastealth and portal camp people coming out. We would then be able to send tell saying how much of a noob they were and to come back again.
