Why I dislike WvW seasons:

1. Too long
WvW seasons are too long. Playing the same servers repetitively is boring. After the first 2 weeks, we pretty much know the server ranking. Heck, you can pretty much predict the ranking http://mos.millenium.org/na/ before the seasons even started.

2. Pre-determined Rewards

Like mentioned before. Rankings of servers are pretty much pre-determined and the rewards are already locked in depending on server size.

The only way for you to get better rewards is:
A. By having lots of major guilds paying to move to your server.
B. Paying to get into a higher populated server.
C. Lucky enough to already be in a “winning” server.

WvW seasons are not server tournaments. It is a reshuffling of guilds/individuals in hope for better rewards.

I just don’t think that they’re healthy to the WvW population overall. At least for the hardcore one.
People getting burned out, servers breaking, huge population shifts (more server stacked and more servers empty), drama everywhere and more.
And in the end, the rewards are, uhh, not great. Seriously, mist runner? Really?

I 100% agree.

Not only do they prove nothing, but they make WvW even more toxic. They create q’s, they break up servers with transfers, and they bring out the absolute worst in everyone.

Now sprinkle a dash of Megaserver into the mix and you get a lovely stew of hate and trolling where ever you go.

Completely agree with both posts. Season’s promotes and/or exacerbates poor behaviors in players. What’s tragic is that it actually affects those that care the most about WvW and the game.

B. Players buying gems to get into a higher populated server.

WvW seasons are not server tournaments. It is a to boost gem sales.

Alot of people are naturally competitive, burning out is your own fault if you don’t take breaks to enjoy the game.
Yes wvw as a competition is a bit of a joke thanks to anet, I don’t see the problem with drama and the forum wars its all part of the experience although some people take it too far that it becomes toxic.

Yes wvw as a competition is a bit of a joke thanks to anet, I don’t see the problem with toxic behaviour its all part of the experience although some people take it too far.

If ANet’s design problems are best solved with “stop playing” then I think there’s probably a legit issue, don’t you think?

I kind of like them. Sure we shed some guilds, but we gained ones as well, and we’re still getting a small trickle in.

It’s actually kind of bringing our server together in some regards, seeing a lot more CO tags attempting to help. Guilds are organizing with each other, more communication between groups.

CD is silver league… dunno if that makes a difference.

Keep seasons (no more than 2 a year, spring and fall tournaments is plenty) for the AP hunters and as a way to maybe convert some PvEers into WvW junkies but make them shorter and make the matches during seasons shorter as well, like two or three days. Maybe even go so far as to only have the weekend matches count for the season score and have regular match-ups during the weekdays. Of course also adjust the AP tracks accordingly but this way people can have a choice and enjoy some non season influenced WvW in between or get it over with more quickly.

I don’t particularly care for Seasons myself but some seem to get excited over it so there has to be some compromise in the middle there. Of course they are pretty darned meaningless unless population imbalances and nutty scoring methods can be addressed but I am pretty sure ANET is very well aware of those issues and likely trying (so far unsuccessfully) to find some fixes.

just decrease the number of maps. Silver and below can barely queue 2 on a good day. NO need for BL maps. EBG seems to be most intense and easy to find fights. Just put 2 ebg maps maybe 3. deal less with getting ninjaed and more on actual fights.

I like this idea. Maybe make a second EBBL style map so it’s not an exact replica.

Could use the EOTM map to relace the BL maps every once and awhile for variety.

I think simply reducing the length would solve the issues and let ANet get their gem sales boosts from the transferring. 4-5 weeks down from 9 would keep it competitive, as it’d be much closer in terms of points and much less time to invest. Don’t really know why they insist on 9 weeks to be honest. The longer of their living stories last for no more than 4 weeks usually.

For that matter, an elimination tournament might be better than Swiss style, with brackets and all.

Get rid of the leagues. Everybody in the Swiss style tournament.

Gold Reward: Servers1-6
Silver Reward: Next 9
Bronze Reward: Last 9

Free transfers to Bronze servers in the weeks leading up to the tournament. Expensive/Zero transfers to Gold.

This season, in both EU and NA, some of the bandwagon free transferred servers that are dominating silver might be good enough for gold, and some of the bandwagon bronze servers are good enough for silver. This, plus do or die matchups in unbalanced early round Swiss style makes every matchup meaningful.

In NA Instead of the boring Black gate cakewalk we have now, we’d have compelling drama over whether HoD (a formerly dead free transfers bandwagon server) could knock out somebody like Dragonbrand for the gold. And, results in every other match could have an impact on this.

Tl;DR. Shift the goalposts, equalize rewards more and eliminate leagues and you get interesting seasons

In season 1 I lost the majority of my guild and many friends. Many came back to GW2 after a few months, but this thing is not healthy. It is basically taking a several week long period and saying “if you are playing for fun, not for points, you are hurting your servermates.” That really stinks.

Season one also surely had much to do with the collapse of the previously strong and organized SoR server. They were dealing with a lot of other things as well, but it seems to me they would have recovered had their problems not been happening during the season.

This season in tier 1 we have a complete joke of a competition that I have seen all sides complain about – and one of the chief reasons I have seen given for this happening is the functionality of the tournament forcing drastic measures to be taken by the servers that experienced an early loss (not my reasoning but it certainly makes sense). There have been days of complete boredom by all three servers, because actual good fights are counter productive to the strategy being implemented here.

Lower in the gold league we see Dragonbrand being given 9 weeks of absolute terrible matchups, because they did not tank their rating like they could have before the tournament started.

In the silver league we see population disparities that make me question what, if any logic was put into grouping up these servers.

At this point in the game I think WvW needs a complete overhaul, as what has been done with it so far is not nearly enough. We need new maps, new objectives, new rewards, new mechanics.

But mainly we need ANet to never make a godkitten wvw tournament again.

With the mega servers taking away a chunk of each server’s identity (for a good cause, I think), we need WvW solutions now. Whether it is guild alliances in place of servers, server score combinations (not forced mergers, Akkadian wrote a phenomenal idea about how to do this the other day, adding a red, blue, and green servers points over 3 tiers), or something else, WvW needs a change.

Right now it is a gametype that many people take very seriously, that seems to be completely misunderstood by the developers managing it. One side of this system has to fall, whether it be the players starting to view it as a complete joke, or the developers starting to put some serious resources into improving it.

TLDR: WvW tournaments bring out the worst, never do it again ANet.

I applaud a.net for attempting to bring a more competitive spirit to WvW, as well as the addition of mistforged weapons. WvW players deserve rewards that are unique to their format, same as other players from other formats, and we’ve waited about two years for that.

Still, without a fix for population imbalances, tournaments won’t make much sense. All seasons accomplish at the moment is rewarding those with the right zip code, while everyone else gets to run in circles for nine weeks. The format is fundamentally flawed at the core, and any tournament structure you superimpose upon it will inevitably inherit those flaws.

I don’t imagine for one moment that there is a perfect solution for player stacking. But there are systems that consistently mitigate the impact of that behavior, many of which have been presented to a.net already, and I would prefer the majority of them to the status quo.

I can’t speak for the op, but that’s not how I see this topic. I think the point isnt to stop working on wvw, or ignore the problems with regular wvw play, but to redirect the minscule amount of effort that they employ to make these seasons to improving those things.

I been in SoR since first week of the release of GW2 when I joined my old GW1 guild. I have seen SoR go from the bottom to the top. It was really sad to see how season 1 destroyed all that work in few weeks.

What I do like to see is a way to put all your new WvW weapons and other WvW rewards in a “Reward Track” like in sPvP and let people unlock it by playing WvW and not because of a reward for wining a long and boring league that makes no sense (at least to me) in a WvWvW game mode.

I agree with you 100%. I know all three NA Tier 1 servers (JQ, TC and BG) are at the point that a lot of the major hardcore WvW guilds on my server just went on break. Because what was friendly tactical competition, has turned into hatred.

It has been HOD/FA/SBI or YB since week 2. Yeah very repetitive for some servers.

This season is not a competitive competition, it is a competition to see who has more coverage. At least for the majority of servers. Until the scoring takes in account the coverage WvW will never really be competitive unless you’re in T1 where every server has coverage.

in the first week, we queued 2-3 Bls each night (4 on reset). Pretty much the same at the beginning of our 2nd match, but once it became a K-train week, not as many people came out.

After that, we would be able to queue 2 Bls a night, with a potential 3rd, if we didn’t attack another BL. But, in our HoD / FA match ups, we aren’t coming out in force, instead saving up some energy for our IoJ / CD matches.

But yeah, I have noticed that IoJ and CD do not have the numbers we have. We were able to keep IoJ on their BL and EB at the end of the week during NA, and we still had people to defend our BL and assault CDs.

I can’t speak for FA, or HoD much, but I have noticed a decrease in the amount of people they have this match, as opposed to 2 weeks ago.

Not true for everyone, Anet allowing that window of opportunity for mass amounts of players to stack on a server for free or at a reduced cost though, I can imagine some communities suffered from it.
