I don't like / understand WvW
Yesterday evening prime time on Fissure of Woe we were a huge team in Edge of The Mist. No coordination, no chatting, nothing, we just steamrolled everything. In 90 minutes we just met the enemy once or twice and we litterally disintegrated them just because of our number. They spent the rest of evening hiding because they had no population.
Edge of the Mists is not considered WvW, it is a karma train that generally does not care about defense nor fights. There are people who try to take it seriously, but the majority of EotM is simply that. If you want to experience actual WvW, visit any of the borderlands or EBG. I can’t speak for EU servers, but I do see that FoW is in the lower tiers which I will assume is not extremely zerg-oriented and you may be able to find groups that fit your playstyle.
Vicious Instinct [VI]
First and foremost: Edge of the Mists is NOT WvW… It’s a karma train and you should expect nothing less. Zerg blobs deliberately avoid one another 90% of the time in order to speed up the karma train and exchange objectives.
The real WvW:
Sticking on commander is not required to fully enjoy WvW at all. The “Stack on me!” is normally in open field to blast finish static fields for speed. Before a zerg v zerg fight blast finish fire fields for might. (Just check out what 25 stacks of might does to your power/condi damage)
But by the sound of it, you are in need of small/roaming group action. Normally on borderlands is where you will meet up with other roaming groups. Flipping camps and the odd tower is your key to being a general pain in the rear for your opponents. You are provoking opponents to come out and fight and if you are lucky you get 1v1, 2v2… 5v5 something like that. If you are proving to bee too much of a thorn in the opponent’s side they might send a zerg your way…. how long can you hold lake/briar tower against a enemy zerg with your 5 man group? Can you upgrade said towers to fortified? Can you siege it up with X trebs and X sup ac’s?
You’d probably have to get fingers dirty by soloing camps\towers…. you will soon see who the usual players are you run into doing the same thing. Join their guild, or just friend them and start running together.
Hop on the commander tag anytime you see your zerg going for keeps. Could be zerg vs keep lord, or you might just find yourself in a 1hr battle for bay\hills\garrison.
If all you are interested in is 1v1 fights, then head to a bl south camp by the windmill. This is the unofficial duel spot. The official duel spot is in OS.
Keep the Faith (and stay out of AC fire)
You are not wrong.
Even on “real” WvW maps, 95% of the time blobbing up in one group is the most effective way to take objectives and that is what you will see. You should run with dedicated WvW guilds if you want anything other than that type of gameplay.

EotM puts all same-colored servers in one team, so it wasn’t entirely FoW (trust me, we don’t have that many WVW players).
If you are active on FoW and wanna do some WvW, feel free to add me in-game (or follow one of my guildies when he/she is roaming around). We normally run around with 3-4 people, taking towers/camps/keeps, picking off stragglers and avoiding the blobs.
As was stated here before: FoW is a small low tier server, so we rarely have a zerg to fight for us.. The only times that occurs is when we are matched against even lower servers, since then everyone is interested again in WvW.. But the current matchup has indeed quite some blobs running around in the maps..

Fissure of Woe
For a moment I was very confused! Fissure of Woe having a massive blob, what kind of black magic is this?
Blob, blob, blob, blob
Zerg, zerg, zerg, zerg
Arrow carts, arrow carts, arrow carts, arrow carts
Blob, blob, blob, blob
Zerg, zerg, zerg, zerg
I mean how can you not understand that?!
What?? Blue got out of spawn?

Hey oldmaster!
The problem is, as others have mentioned is that you are running in EotM. In EotM all people from all all severs that are the same color are put together in 1 team.
This means it lacks server goals or any reason to fight. That leads to people just running around, leveling their characters and farming champ loot bags and karma.
If you want to experience WvW in it’s better form, try one of the borderlands or EB.
You basicly have 3 basic options for this:
- Run with the commander group (if any) – this will be kind of the same as EotM but with a bit more tactics involved, and with the sense of you actually fighting for “your own people” – you can get some good fights from time to time
- Run with a guild group – this is the more orgaznied version – usually smaller in numbers than the commander group and using way more tactics, specific builds, specific classes – requires TS mostly
- Go roaming – meaning you run solo or withaa small group taking small objectives and looking for fights
Both of the above mentioned 3 options are a lot more enjoyable than EotM, so give it a go!
In hopes of stomping you on the battlefield,

I didn’t know there was teamspeak in EotM.
Not much to worry about in EotM, just the Fearomancer, the occasional guild group, the solo defender on oil or arrow cart.

^this. Also leave EOTM for what it is, as other people said, its nothing but a karmatrain farm where everyone runs around in blobs taking stuff for the free wxp and gazillions badges. I got bored of it within an hour cause of this and it has nothing to do with the real WvW and its faulty score system.

Don’t argue with idiots, they pull you down their level and own you with experience.
If you don’t like zerging go solo or form a small havoc group its way more fun. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OBhfkJ1J3MY

WvW is a complicated game with money and politics as well as fighting and strategy.
as an uber casual your pov is from that of the cannon fodder dying on the front lines
Zergs are like traffic. Complaining about it while being in one is absurd since that person is part of the problem. If you don’t want to fight a zerg, don’t be in one… roam, skirmish, GvG there are lots of other ways to play the game than follow a dorito chip.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
Most servers have a sever wide voip for wvw. I recommend finding out if ur server has one and trying to connect with people on there.

They do 2 or so times a week recently, because they organize “events” in wich quite some PvE players partake, a lot of people usually not playing WvW because there is no point on FoW due to the lack of numbers and the fact T8/9 are massively imbalanced for the past 6+ months (ie : FoW is one of the server that is either roflstomping the lower ones, or getting rolfstomp by the higher ones, added to the fact there is really no presence most of the time from their ennemies too), and then it’s quite nice because they keep coming and fighting.
It’s quite impressive to see i must say (not fun when at the same time you have what’s left of Bt’s prime time might before it totally crumbled and left to fight) and quite fun.
Don’t feel bad. Anet doesn’t like/understand WvW either.

Exactly! Nobody was/is ever forced to follow a commander. If you don’t like to play that way try doing something else. I personally try to do a bit of everything.
