The WvW is alot of fun when/if you can get past the que but…

Its very impersonal currently. All i know when im running around is kill red/blue or green…

In DAOC for example you would encounter a well known player or rival and get excited about it,,,with GW2 its just blah when you kill someone, you will never know their name.

Where they horribad?..doesnt matter you dont know their name

Where they an exceptional player? doesnt matter you will never know their name.

I dont understand the logic in hiding players names & guilds…

I was a big fan of the kill spam in RvR in Mythic’s DAoC; you could tell where **** was getting real and who was killing who.

One of my favorites was a player named Drowning killing a player named Abagofkittens in a location called the Morgur River: [read: Abagofkittens was killed by drowning in the Morgur River]

Its the same in WAR also as Daoc when you’d get that great 6v6 fight (in gw2 case 5v5) and you would get such a rush knowing who your fighting and telling if you can keep up with them. They should remove this “invader” “defender” stuff and just put they’re name and colour and guild. The reputation should be given to those who deserve it.

It’s also sad that you can’t talk to the opposite faction anymore as in beta. It’s making it become very dry. Some of us like to roam in a group and not roam with the zerg. With the LOD issue it’s sometimes you’re in the middle of a zerg before you even realize it..

i do feel like they carebeared wvw a lot. but also i think things between servers and guilds on seperate servers are already going to get really sour when 2 week matches start. the last thing we need is the ability to know who just killed us and danced on our head so we can whisper them and rage…

i already hate [Res] so bad i dance on their bodies and sleep with their slain womens corpses on the battlefield.

I disagree I like nameless enemies, just seeing their server and invader/defender. But I come from DAoC where all your enemies are nameless as you are fighting them just there race and realm rank is whats displayed. Unless they are realm rank 12 THEN you can see their name, in which I think that is really cool and maybe someting Anet should think about adding, something similar atleast. Anyway I think the nameless enemies is fine plus you can see their guild and you can ‘mark’ players by their gear, and it really doesnt matter until the 2 week match-ups take effect.

You could see the enemies name in the combat windowby clicking on them, or you would see it in the combat window when they kill somebody or when you kill them.

I am not sure if anonymity does anything. I actually thought they did that because it would mean less lag in huge battles, but if the name is in the combat text, than the information is there so my hypothesis was way off. That actually thwarts the carebearing idea because you can still see who you killed with your combat log if you really wanted to. What’s the point?

I completely agree. I was really hoping for another DAOC style war between 3 realms with keep and tower takes as well as small mans, soloers, duoers, etc. It was so much fun getting a group of 8 or even 2-5 people together to go defend the realm from other small groups, avoiding zergs, killing pesky stealther groups (you know who you are). WvWvW from the small amount I’ve played feels like a casual zergfest.

For game that says they loved DAoC and seemed to want to re-create some of the best parts of that game, I am supremely disappointed.

Yeah because in other games I would look at someone’s name, alt tab, and then look them up in armory or google them to find their guild website and see how much they play and how good they are. Then I alt tab back into the game and decide if I should be scared or not….

Cmon people. I still dont get it. At most there will be 10-15 people on each server that people on other servers have “heard of before”. Even then those people are probably elitists (Commanders who play 24/7 and stream 12/7 with 500 twitch followers). Who cares if you know those few people?

I think it’s refreshing to be able to PvP for the fun of it on any class I feel like making with any weapon setup I feel like using regardless of the outcome. Once I realized that WvW was completely anonymous I started becoming more adventurous. I’m doing more in PvP in GW2 than I ever did in any other game.

In DAoC, WoW, and Rift I played PvP extremely competitively and would not even enter PvP until I had perfected my gear and rotations (standard PvP preparation). I admit I did enjoy having characters with good PvP reputations. However I played classes I was good at, not always classes I enjoyed or wanted to play.

I’m really really enjoying the freedom of PvP in GW2 WvW.

I agree it would be nice to be able to do SOMETHING productive in WvW with a group of 3-4 people. The only place I have found with this aspect is the jumping puzzle in the instance. Actually had some great 4v4 battles there last night, and although it wasnt for WvW points, it means alot when you are fighting not to die and jump through 30 minutes of crap again…lol.

Lack of names overcomes fear of failure.

Looking stupid, loosing or failing in the eyes of others is one of people’s greatest fears. A competitive environment like PvP is an almost continual series of tests where you may fail, loose or look stupid.

Hardcore players love that, but the casual player does not. (And here I mean casual by attitude, not by hours spent ingame).

It’s the right way to go, and will ensure WvW will have a healthy playerbase long-term.

Lol, this is not a problem of anonymity, it is a problem of self esteem. Sure everyone wants to win and play well, but if you cant have fun because you are scared that one guy will remember your name and say “that guy sucks”, well then that is not the games fault, it is yours. I understand that fear of failure is a common human condition, but I disagree that anonymity overcomes it. If you trip and fall walking across a busy street, you are embarrassed. I don’t think I would be any more embarrassed if I was wearing a name tag. People laugh that you fell in the street, they don’t care what your name is. They go home and tell their wife, “I saw this guy fall in the street today”. They don’t say, “I saw this guy named Michael Moore fall in the street today, better write down his name so we can make fun of him again when we see his name again.”

Regardless of if your name is present or not, you failed and people saw it. Overcoming fear of failure is to succeed after failing. Everyone fails, no reason to fear it.

But walking across the street, and accepting the risk of tripping, is something you have to do as part of your daily life. It really isn’t a voluntary choice.

Tripping while walking across a stage in front of an audience of a hundred people, however, is a different story. There is a reason so many people avoid the voluntary activity of public speaking. It is the same reason casual players would avoid WvW if their names were visible.

I have a different opinion about that. Since I’m playing classes now that I’ve never touched there’s a lot to do and will probably keep me entertained for a long time to come. I’ll probably not do sPvP unless I feel confident in my competitiveness with any of them (which I don’t feel right now).

Another area to consider is that ArenaNet does a good job of removing the “bad guys” from the game, eliminating the reason some of us PvP in the first place. In other games I’ve kept KoS list of players with nasty attitudes to hunt down. But since ArenaNet takes care of that for us, we’re free to PvP for the fun of it and not to be a vigilante.

Actually your analogy (to be logic) would have to be this:

People avoid public speaking because they are scared of failure.
Casual players avoid WvWvW because they are scared of failure.

OR

Casual players avoid WvW because theyre names are visible.
People avoid public speaking because their names are visible.

By your logic, these “casual gamers” would be fine with public speaking as long as no one in the audience knows their name….I seriously doubt that.

Again, that is your choice, and you are allowing AN to dictate how you play. We are free to PvP for the fun in any game. Did Blizzard Account Security say, “If you dont have a KoS list, we are banning your account”?

Some people actually enjoy PvP much more when they HAVE a list of KoS people. AN took that option away, so in essence we are more limited in what we can do. I actually am not a KoS list person, because I KoS anything that is red in any game. That’s just how I play. I have casual friends that play on other servers that I dont talk to in vent. I could run by one of them on the battlefield and not even know. That is ridiculous….

I just saw this, and I never even thought of that. That really makes no sense. If people are scared because other people will see their names, people on our server can see you suck it up, and those are actually the people you will see again tomorrow in wvw who will remember you suck.

If carebearing was the real reason, it would be more important to hide names from allies than enemies.

I’ve played on PvP servers on other games, for many years each, very familiar with grinding to the end and getting beat down by higher-level players along the way with the resulting in-game insults. But at some point you realize that you’re just not effective with class “A” and never will be, but you are effective with class “B” even if it’s not your favorite.

Imagine playing a sport where you’re competitive at a position you can tolerate, but never will be good at the one you want to play. If you want to be in the game at all you have to play the position you’re good at.

I agree with everything you just said. So do you want to be good or do you want to have fun? For me, whatever class I am the best at is the funnest class. I don’t see how playing a class you suck at could be your favorite class, but to each his own. There’s only 1 thing I don’t understand.

Where does your name come into this? Regardless of your name being shown or not, Shaq figured out that while he likes to play PG, he has the best chance to win at Center. I get that part, but I dont get why his name being shown or not on his jersey is going to affect that decision.

I always envied ranged players who could do their thing and manage to escape from attacks. I tried and failed to effectively play those classes in every game, but I was very effective as an assassin rogue in every game. In fact I was especially effective at taking out ranged classes and was always impressed if one escaped from me. If my pride was not an issue, I’d have played a ranged class.

I always envied healing classes who could stand in the middle and keep their team alive, while escaping from attacks. I tried and failed to effectively play those classes, in fact my attention span was not nearly as good as it needed to be to keep all the right people healed. If my pride was not an issue I’d have kept trying to play healer.

I’m a retired military war veteran, not risk averse but definitely favor acceptable risk. Not ashamed of pride in doing a good job, even if it’s not the job I favor. I want at least a greater chance of winning than losing.

Thank you for serving our country, my Dad is a War Vet and my brother is a Marine. I’d like to thank everyone on this post for your contributions as I better understand why there are no names in WvW, although I still do not agree that it encourages vast amounts of people to play that would normally not pvp.

LeCreaux – I still think you are the best at rogue type classes because those are your favorite type of combat mechanics, whether your realize it or not. If you really liked healing more than backstabbing, your attention span would have been better. I always thought it would be great to be a healer because everyone needed you, but when I healed I noticed the same thing that I was bad at it, mostly because I would get bored or disinterested.

I was a mage in WoW, an Assassin in SWToR, and a Guardian in this game. I like to mix it up, and I am probably equally sucky at all classes :-).

I understand where ArenaNet is coming from, in that they want as many people to enjoy WvW as possible without being intimidated or feeling singled out, and that the compromise is that the people who are really into the player rivalry are the sacrifice.

That said, if it were possible I would choose the option to enable my own name to be visible to enemies (with this option is disabled by default). Some number of other people would do the same, and we’d have fun knowing we killed a nemesis (there aren’t that many worlds, and now that worlds have found their ranking, we’re getting matched with the same 3-4 all the time now). Maybe people would single me out and kill me more often because I have a name, but I’m fine with that. Everyone else can remain anonymous if they choose.

I disagree, and if you view the WvW discussion on Guru you can see it’s plenty personal. The rivalry is at a server and guild level, as it should be for WvW.

However, as Guru even foreshadows, when people get personal it can get ugly.

I remember in WoW PvP some people would rage to the degree they would log onto your server just to insult you. No thanks, I much prefer how GW2 handles it with anonymity.

I like how it is now, because it’s not like sPvP where everyone looks exactly the same. We still have our unique dyes and gear. I can still identify enemy players by their appearance and remember them from match to match. I think it’s just personal enough to have rivalry, but it doesn’t enable inflammatory immature attacks by being able to fully identify someone.

you can’t see enemy dyes

we might as well hide names from allies then

I just saw this, and I never even thought of that. That really makes no sense. If people are scared because other people will see their names, people on our server can see you suck it up, and those are actually the people you will see again tomorrow in wvw who will remember you suck.

If carebearing was the real reason, it would be more important to hide names from allies than enemies.

This. I think it’s to prevent opposing worlds from pming each other. You can probably figure out why that would be.

I believe you really wont see this type of RvR in DAoC ever again…unless they compeltly copied DAoC to the T. Even then, players would not like such a game because to them it would be way to hardcore.

It was an amazing game, but with how gamers are catered to in MMOs it would never work. WvW in gw2 is prolly the closest thing you are going to get to DAoC anytime soon. As for enemy names, I think it is fine the way it is. But it would be nice to see kill spam in the game. It showed who was fighting who and in what area..

While I prefer DAoC’s RvR system (it’s much much better than the current WvW, but it wasn’t like that from day 0 either.. so let’s give ANet some slack.. it’s a great start).. but I see one issue if they added the names in the combat log and killspam.. the issue being you can send whispers to people on other servers.. so soon enough you’ll get the usual childish trash talk and e-chat fighting.
Hence if they ever add names, they should disable whispers to other servers in the WvW zones.

As unfortunate as it is, I do agree. Casual players are ruining the hardcore gaming industry.

Nobody seems to have mentioned this, but you could never send tells to enemies in DAOC even though you see their name.

Agree there. Since I played an assassin rogue in WoW my role was specifically to kill players when they weren’t ready. That led to many, many instances of getting some really nasty whispers in game and cyberstalking on forums. No thanks, I much prefer to be a nameless invader.

I disagree, and if you view the WvW discussion on Guru you can see it’s plenty personal. The rivalry is at a server and guild level, as it should be for WvW.

However, as Guru even foreshadows, when people get personal it can get ugly.

If someone logs on your server and start raining kitten on you that means you did something right. Whats wrong with it? You can just ignore and report him,People get banned for saying “kitten” on public chat, they don’t stand a chance.
