Hey, I’ll try to keep this short. Flame if you like, but imo this would fix the majority of the current issues.

- Merge servers into 4 tiers, make the transfers free + every next change 400 gems no matter the tier
- Offer GW2 WvW Edition as F2P (locks game to WvW & Eotm, add antihack software)
- Set Eternal Battleground and Borderlands to level 80 only
- Add better and unique WvW rewards that are hard to obtain (skins, ascended gear etc)

EotM was designed as an overflow for WvW. Perhaps you should only be allowed to enter EotM if all four maps on your server are have a queue.

Restricting WvW access to only lvl 80’s is probably not a good idea since this goes against the game’s original design of having a very non-linear levelling path, granted most of us wish we would never see an uplevel from our own server again.

Unique as well as hard to obtain rewards for WvW would be nice as long as it doesn’t encourage PVD.

Rewards are a good idea especially if they are tied directly to kills. GW2 players are very motivated by fashionable rewards. It would be great to get more players grinding on killing the other guys. That would provide training and lots of action.

I’d rather stuff that discourages mindless zergs and encourages people to do small group stuff. Like 5- man groups more often in wvw and less of the 50 man blob nonsense.

The level 80 to join EBG and BL would only apply to F2P accounts (I see how you can understan it that way, my bad). That way we wouldn’t have so many trolls and hackers if they managed to pass the antihack software (those “shield” apps other mmos use), cause grinding it out to lv80 in EOTM would take a while, most wouldn’t bother.

GW2 WvW is in dire need of player influx, T1 don’t have queues apart from reset night/weekend and evening EBG. And it’s been like this for months, that’s alarming!

I am 100% sure that a lot of the F2P players would buy the game, buy gems etc, when they could try the game for themselves before purchasing.

Zetsumei: the level limitation would only apply to F2P accounts. That would “help” people learn the game mechanics etc via EOTM. As we know EOTM can level up your toon really quick, get you a decent amount of gold etc. It’s a nice starting point. For those who would like to experience more, they’d have to buy the game.

I know Arena Net staff that lurks the forum probably won’t even notice this thread, but I have to try. Not saying anything won’t change a thing.

I strongly feel F2P (for WvW) is the way to go right now, along with server mergers and better rewards. All of this could be accomplished with little coding effort.

Maybe I’m just a dreamer.

The problem since day 1 has always been rewards. Why bother coming in WvW when PvP offers a far more balanced (lol…) playing environment and rewards you 10x better for your time and effort than WvW does? It’s the same excuse in EotM… same overall format, 5x the reward. And PvE too… invest half the time and effort, get more rewards for that effort.

Rewards…rewards…rewards…

The next problem with WvW is it’s worthless. The only reason to do it is for the lawlz. Not only because of the lack of rewards, but because there’s no lasting benefit for doing well. No lasting hindrance for doing poorly. Heck, there’s no real server identity outside of WvW anymore thanks to mega servers. The whole format is worthless. There needs to be more to WvW than logging in, playing for 30-60mins before you’re bored, then sitting around afk talking to people over guild chat. What made frontiers such a valuable part of DAoC? Why was sieging enemy towns such a driving force in Shadowbane? Why did we want to attack keeps and towers in WAR? Why don’t I care if I log into WvW or not?

The last thing is overall balance. I’ve played the game for 2 years and never once heard a commander ask for more Rangers or Engineers. I’ve heard them ask for a Mesmer (singular). I’ve heard them ask for a Thief (singular) to perma stealth to res said mesmer. Half the classes have nothing to offer other than yak slapping?

Rewards, purpose, and balance… that’s what we need most of all. Stale maps, stale gameplay, and stale strategy can be solved second.

Mystic clovers, Obsidian Shards, Skins, TOMES OF KNOWLEDGE! Better drops (though I must say, I’ve had 3 ascended pieces from WvW rank chests within the past few months). Something more along the PvP lines of reward tracks?

Fix server balance, then make tournaments more frequently. I don’t want bonus chests based on my server rank. I want tickets at the end of the week to buy something fun.

WvW’ers to not get opportunity to grind like other players do, and PvP’ers don’t need to grind, because they get their rewards handed to them on a plate because they don’t want to PvE.

Repeatable achis with rewards? 1 random t6 mati and x achi point after every 50 kills?
1 world boss kind rare chest after x captured points (example 1 point for supply camp, 2 for towers etc…)
Real rewards for badges? Tomes, material bags etc…
And maybe a total wvw matchup rework. Players can select a guild every week. And at every reset the game dish out guilds to realms depend of the guilds wvw performance. Guilds should track ther members overal wxp influance on the week

You guys have no idea how good WvW actually is. Change is not always a positive. Look at the new PvP feature. It is horrible and worse than the previous. Look at EotM. No WvW player is going to say that is more fun than regular PvP.

There is no way to fix the WvW balance issues. If a server is winning, everyone wants to play and tag up, if they are loosing, no one wants to play or tag up.

I think the new scoring system may be just the shot in the arm WvW needs. I know they are trying some new rules, see how they work out. I think with finding the right balance of new rules, they may stop the blowing up of the score during off hours.

Seems like ANET has started to pay attention to WvW. Maybe things will change.

I actually like this idea. It’d promote more to WvW and less to KTrain in EOTM. Plus it’d still allow for players to be in EOTM while in Queue for WvW should a queue pop up.

Not to mention it’d make EOTM be used as intended. Instead of “Lets log on our lvl 1’s and go to EOTM to lvl to 80 guys!”

I posted this on Reddit a few days ago when a person was asking about what you’d like to see in the next feature patch, but I think it works here too.

  • Fixes to exploits and counters to siege trolling.
  • Changes to the ppt system to address some things like encouraging smart play and lowering the issues with population differences during some timezones.
  • Something to change the weekly matches that adds some degree of randomness to the mechanics of WvW and more variety beyond potentially getting matched up with a lower/higher rank server.
  • Changes to WvW reward structure to make WvW more rewarding, give more ways for WvWers to actually show off their accomplishments and rank, and give more benefits to scouting or doing the other menial tasks.
  • New WvW maps, or at least reskins for the maps and npcs to at least break the visual monotony.
  • Reworks to EotM to make it less of a constant ktrain and actually encourage some competition.
  • Reworks to EotM’s map so the sides are a little more even in terms of destructible walls/gates, bridge locations that can actually kill, point control benefits, and so on.
  • New uses for WvW ability points, including a line that could be nearly infinite so you can actually do something with all the excess ability points in between new abilities being released.
  • New types of siege and upgrades.
  • A banker in each of the starting areas of WvW.
  • More commander mechanics like tags that can be seen by the guild only and map interaction between commander and squad or vice versa.
  • Making supply map specific to help with blobs just porting to unpressured bls for supply to come back and full repair or do a sudden mass golem rush.
  • Changing the rally mechanic so a zerg doesn’t just get up from tagging a random Moa or low level ungeared player that is following just to troll.
  • Changes to the Skritt and Centaur areas in the bls to make them something more than just part of map completion.
  • More uses for badges of honor, like possibly the ability to buy a WvW only commander tag to help encourage more people to try their luck with commanding.
  • Changes to camp, tower, and keep claiming so up to 4 different guilds can claim one structure to use their guild buffs on and claims can be overwritten if a guild has more buffs active for longer than the guild that currently has it claimed.
  • The ability to display your actual character name to enemies if you want it shown.

Ultimately though, I think the problem with sustaining WvW populations comes down to three big things. One, lack of variety and wildcard elements each week to entertain people and make communities think about how they are going to fight that week. Two, inadequate loot that forces people to leave WvW so they can get the stuff they need to be more effective in it or to just keep themselves from going in the red in terms of Gold. And three, lack of getting that sense of prestige with titles that are mostly INSANELY time consuming to get or ranks that you can only really be showcase to enemy servers when you are in WvW against them.

This. But maybe not so harsh, just 1 map in queue should be enough to enable EOTM OVERFLOW. Or receive like 50% less karma/xp/wxp if there is no queue on your server.

Background:
My server is having a very easy matchup this week, almost no resistance in wvw.

On the other side…eotm was bursting at the seams with ppl from the servers we are fighting (remembered them from their guild tags. I was (am) leveling a alt in there btw).

Yeah, they are working on this. I think this is logically unanimous among the player base.

The PPT system is fine. Changing it for the sake of changing it is irrational if you ask me. Particularly when you mention time zones. What makes a prime time players time more valuable then off time players?

the maps seem boring if you are there for the scenery. But the maps are a game board well understood by the best players. You could create a new board and game, but might not want to yank the board out from under the best players in the middle of their competition.

How you fun when new players can’t even run in WvW maps?

There’s a bad thief always wait in a spawn area. Thief like to kill newest people that want to enjoy WvW.

So that is a reason new players don’t like WvW. Nobody fun, unless a thief who can kill other class within 5 seconds.

Anet can’t fix this because it’s a marketing. Nice marketing!!!

I’m sure, that’s WvW balancing. It’s a plan to reduce enemy players. You don’t need to care this because it too late.

The real prize for the winning is more people join in WvW. The real prize for the losing is no people join in WvW

Obviously more people have more fun in EotM than in WvW, that’s why there are there.
Obviously it’s never a good idea to force people into something that gives than less fun than something they are doing.

So stop the complains about EotM.
It’s there
It’s more attractive than WvW
Stop trying to force people into WvW that don’t want to be there anymore

Admittedly WvW could have an advantage over EotM, namely competitive play.
However it has 2 design error that negate that:

  • it does not adapt it’s capacity to varying demand, I.e. Queue in the evening, empty maps at other times.
  • absolutely no balance of the most decisive resource: man-power, neither in total nor in it’s 24/7 distribution.

If those 2 are fixed it likely regain its advantage of competition, and this advantage will attract player. But as long as they aren’t fixed it’s pseudo-competition is only a source of frustration that let people avoid it.

The PPT system is fine. Changing it for the sake of changing it is irrational if you ask me. Particularly when you mention time zones. What makes a prime time players time more valuable then off time players?

I feel like it has room for improvement. Seeing as ANet is doing testing with points per kill here soon, that could help with encouraging smart play. My idea for timezones though was more with structures than what you’re talking about with timezones getting more ppt. Like a random structure that would be the same throughout each borderland might have a higher ppt then usual for that week. That way smaller populations could utilize it by either trying holding that structure or give them more room to take other structures while the enemy is tunnel visioned on that one, kind of like what happens in EB with SMC.

I don’t mean a lower tier vs higher tier kind of thing. I’m talking about things like buffs and debuffs. Maybe for a week certain types of siege are less effective, certain structures that are the same on each borderland might be more/less durable, yaks coming from a specific side in each of the borderlands are slower/faster than normal, and so on. Once the week is up then those buffs/debuffs will be gone and replaced by a different ones. These things would be purely on the environment and npcs so combat won’t change but tactics on where and what to hit might be more random.

  • Changes to WvW reward structure to make WvW more rewarding, give more ways for WvWers to actually show off their accomplishments and rank, and give more benefits to scouting or doing the other menial tasks.

How? This is a common idea. The problem is finding agreeable solutions.

For one, having it so your badges can be used to buy things that you would be able to get in pve and through the pvp reward track or possibly having a similar kind of item that’s like the pvp reward track. Two, more potential titles including some related to your WvW rank and maybe something similar to the pvp rank finishers but for WvW. And lastly, with scouting and similar issues, I think making it so yak walking/defending actually gave event rewards could help as a small buff. In terms of long term fix, I think it would need to be something like a tagging system, like with Battlefield, where the first person that marks a gate or wall getting attacked gets like the scout credit. But this doesn’t really solve issues like scouts doing things like keeping siege tapped so it’s not really an encompassing idea.

I’m not saying do away with all of that, I’m saying make it so competition is encouraged. One of the reasons EotM was created was to give people a place to do their achievements without causing issues on the standard WvW maps. But the other reason was for it to be used as a test map for the standard maps. And it’s kind of difficult to test things if there isn’t incentive for it to be utilized.

  • New uses for WvW ability points, including a line that could be nearly infinite so you can actually do something with all the excess ability points in between new abilities being released.

Such as?

I would like to see one for the supply trap. The abilities would probably be something like increased supply removed, supply trap no longer has a cast time or a reduced cast time, supply trap is ground targetable, and whenever you activate an enemy WvW trap it’s slightly delayed and shows an aoe circle so you could possibly dodge it if you have good reflexes.

For the endless one, possibly something like a line that gives +.5%, magic find, wvw xp rate, or karma gain for every couple of WvW points, it gives a higher percentage but doubles the point cost each time you put some into it.

Off the top of my head.

For siege, maybe something like an anti-golem weapon. It’s attacks do fairly low damage to players and siege, but to golem suits it does a significant amount and possibly has a skill that does short stuns that only effect the suits.

For upgrades, I would add new high tier upgrades to camps. Ones like dolyak armor to increase a dolyak’s resistance to attacks and conditions, and a sentry turret for the camp.

You mean like preventing supply from going between maps such as changes maps spawns you with zero supply? Not sure i agree. That works against lesser populations more then not.

It doesn’t remove your supply but it’s locked to that bl. Like say I was in red bl with 20 supply and zoned to green bl. I would have however much supply I had in green bl but once I zoned back to red bl then I would still have my 20 that I had in there before.

I can see your point, especially from a defensive perspective of trying to defend like Garrison and EB keep with a vastly outnumbered population, but I still think that I could be more beneficial than harming for lesser populations. Right now, supply is just incredibly abundant with larger servers. People can port out and grab supply from keeps on other borderlands or just EotM. Because of this, it’s difficult to weaken supply lines enough without a multi-borderland hit.

  • Changing the rally mechanic so a zerg doesn’t just get up from tagging a random Moa or low level ungeared player that is following just to troll.

What do you suggest?

I would prefer removing the rally mechanic entirely from WvW, but maybe something like a player has to be stomped to rally people would work too. That way people are only rallying off actual players and low level ungeared people would probably be dpsed too fast for them to be stomped.

I’m not saying make it into something like the grub zone or something like that. I mean maybe make those locations some type of point for people to fight over. It could be anything, maybe if you have one of those locations you get a small percentage more WvW xp from kills. Or maybe it could be something more for small man groups, like the dolyaks from the north section either get armor to make them more defensive if they’re friendly or if they’re enemy then they get slowed.

No, thanks.

Why? My experience with claiming has been guilds claiming structures with little to no buffs and won’t relinquish claim or don’t have people on to do it. By having multiple claiming or at least someone being able to take claim if they have more/longer buffs it could help with the hassle.

I don’t really see how it would promote toxicity in PvE maps, unless you’re talking about like Lionsarch. But, this was more of a minor personal preference that I would like to see so I don’t really mind if this never comes to be.

WvW needs alot of improvements and changes/redesigns to get back onto the right path:

  • First off, rename it into RvR (Realm versus Realm)
    Anet has to completely remove that old unsuccessful concept around Server Based Worlds. There needs to be just simple only 3 different Realms between which Players rotate weekly, similar like on EotM.

Each Realm would be unique and would provide different. Each Realm would have its own unique WvW Map that was earlier a Borderland Map

  • WvW needs a complete Redesign of the Borderlands to turn those 3 copies into 3 own unique different maps. 1 Per different Realm so to say.
    - Lords of the Mists = Map “The Sphere of Eternity Realm
    - Wardens of Souls = Map “The Sphere of Valor Realm
    - Harbingers of Destiny = Map “The Sphere of Fate Realm

Eternal Battlefield and Edge of the Mists get merged into a complete new 4th central realm and become the “The Rift of the Mists Realm”

Thats one big changes that I’d do. The current WvW must get free from its Server bonded Chains. only then there is the chance to change this gameplay mode into somethign much bigge,r much more depthful and entetaining, than it is currently.

GW2’s WvW needs alot more diversity and the best thing how anet could reach this goal is by turnign all of the current maps into 4 unique different Maps, turning Eotm and EB into a merged new Overflow Map, while each realm has its own unique map where each realm has its own unique home advantage.

Thats just the top of the iceberg of changes, redesigns and improvements, that WvW woud need to be saved on the long run.
A simple, but still since over 2 years missing improvement would have been ti fix finally the WvW Achievements!
I start to ask myself slowly, if we will ever get to see this happening…

Ultimately though, I think the problem with sustaining WvW populations comes down to three big things. One, lack of variety and wildcard elements each week to entertain people and make communities think about how they are going to fight that week. Two, inadequate loot that forces people to leave WvW so they can get the stuff they need to be more effective in it or to just keep themselves from going in the red in terms of Gold. And three, lack of getting that sense of prestige with titles that are mostly INSANELY time consuming to get or ranks that you can only really be showcase to enemy servers when you are in WvW against them.

While I do think a few of the other things you suggested were good ideas, such as giving you the option to show your name, more trait lines, and commander tags only for guild groups, your three points here are probably the most important.

I also like what people suggested about EotM being only available when maps are queue’d – EotM was only meant to be a waiting room but people just use it as a way to go around in circles and farm champs and levels. If Anet does to EotM what it did to Queensdale then will as many people do EotM? Probably not. They want easy money, easy loot, with little effort. My biggest problem is that WvW is not rewarding whatsoever, I get a bunch of bags that only occasionally give me items worth having. I wouldn’t mind long grinds in WvW if it meant I could choose a really cool reward with the tickets/badges I’ve earned, not just ascended (which most people in WvW already have plenty of.)

Obviously more people have more fun in EotM than in WvW, that’s why there are there.
…It’s more attractive than WvW …

WvW is a lot more work. It takes far more skill and patience. Some people like a challenge and some don’t.

I know many people who can’t stand EotM, myself included. I don’t think it is fun at all. It’s pure grind. I do it watching the clock to farm materials for ascended gear. I can’t stand more than an hour of it once every couple of weeks.

The problem since day 1 has always been rewards. Why bother coming in WvW when PvP offers a far more balanced (lol…) playing environment and rewards you 10x better for your time and effort than WvW does? It’s the same excuse in EotM… same overall format, 5x the reward. And PvE too… invest half the time and effort, get more rewards for that effort.

Rewards…rewards…rewards…

The next problem with WvW is it’s worthless. The only reason to do it is for the lawlz. Not only because of the lack of rewards, but because there’s no lasting benefit for doing well. No lasting hindrance for doing poorly. Heck, there’s no real server identity outside of WvW anymore thanks to mega servers. The whole format is worthless. There needs to be more to WvW than logging in, playing for 30-60mins before you’re bored, then sitting around afk talking to people over guild chat. What made frontiers such a valuable part of DAoC? Why was sieging enemy towns such a driving force in Shadowbane? Why did we want to attack keeps and towers in WAR? Why don’t I care if I log into WvW or not?

The last thing is overall balance. I’ve played the game for 2 years and never once heard a commander ask for more Rangers or Engineers. I’ve heard them ask for a Mesmer (singular). I’ve heard them ask for a Thief (singular) to perma stealth to res said mesmer. Half the classes have nothing to offer other than yak slapping?

Rewards, purpose, and balance… that’s what we need most of all. Stale maps, stale gameplay, and stale strategy can be solved second.

exactly. all pvpish mmorpgs have rewards and purposes for their large scale pvp related contents. why do players raid and why do they defend, because if they raid successful they gain rewards that otherwise cannot be gained elsewhere, they defend unsuccessful, they lose things which affect them directly.

but we must all not forget one thing, gw2 is a game designed for casuals and thus very forgiving in everything. i think anet will find it difficult to find ways to provide greater rewards between offensive and defensive.

Blob doesn’t prevent guild groups from forming. Both can be used together very effectively.

Blob nights are usually the best times to form havoc and smaller groups. While the blobs concentrate on each other, that leaves all sorts of areas for havoc and smaller groups to cause trouble in.

As to the OP’s comments……I would go for better rewards, and maybe some larger and/or new maps……but merging won’t change balance problems. I have played many mmorpgs that have had some form of wvw, and there is no way to solve balance problems, as players move around depending on what servers are doing better. Imbalance is just a natural problem that comes with wvw, imo.

I hate such uninformed claims of this matter. People make these claims and never offer a lick of evidence to support it. I play in NA, and I know for a fact that all 4 maps on the top 6 servers can have a queue on any given day. SO these irrational claims of something being broken or unpopular come off to me as cheap accusations that players make because they don’t get the changes they want, regardless of how it effects everyone else.

That 1 out of 17 tiers MAY have queue on all maps for a few Hours does indeed look like evidence that everything is fine to me

Some good ideas guys, but I feel like most of them would require a lot of work to develop.
I think simple, easy to implement ideas/changes would have a bigger chance coming to life.

Again in my opinion the first thing that needs to change/be offered is a free 2 play WvW version of GW2, which is very easy to make, costs close to nothing while bringing the much needed player base back into WvW. I’m talking about thousands of new players that I’m sure at least half would buy the full game after a while plus gems etc. Seriously ArenaNet please consider this, I can only see benefits by doing this.

Also about rewards, again, very easy to change. Remove badges of honor from EOTM, add the option to trade badges (~10k) for black lion tickets, ascended items you name it. Yeah it would be a grind, but a well worth it one.

So please guys, simple ideas, I’m still convinced that devs secretly read some of these threads. Here’s hoping…
