Increasing Matchup Volatility
Claude, volatility is not the solution and the actual ranking system is the problem.
Leagues didn’t help. It caused rating isolation for servers at the border between leagues.

No. Balanced matchups are far FAR better than varied one sided matchups

I bored as hell fighting the same matchup every week and I know I’m not the only one.
The previous system was much better but the truth is that no computer algorithm will find magic matchups… Somewhere down the line someone at Anet is going to have to take the decision to fix WvW.

No server imbalance is the problem.
The ranking and match making work reasonable well, the only problem is there are no balanced alternatives to choose.
Its going to be a PR nightmare for Anet to merge servers if they actually tuck their tails in between and admit that 24 servers is too much. Also that would kill alot of revenue from
gem transfers.
Will slightly higher volatility and randomization hurt? or how about
a ratings reset balancing quarterly or semi annual?

Depends if you think one-sided t matches hurt.
With higher votalily you will have more of them, and they will be even more extrem.
On the other side, if balance would be improved, you will have less of them and you will even have more variance as servers will be closer together.
We’ve already been down the road of more match up volatility and it didn’t work. Matches were lopsided and were ultimately a blow out.
The only thing worse than getting bored fighting the same people again and again is being unable to fight at all because your dominating/being dominated.
There’s been some decent variation on the EU side, although Deso, SFR and RS got matched up for two weeks in a row now – Deso is losing a fair amount of Rating points now and will drop once Living World S2 begins.
Population imbalance will continue to lead to imbalanced match ups so no matter the changes they make to the Match up system you’ll get bad match ups, otherwise best thing to do is ignore the score and focus on fighting when you can unless it’s really that one sided.

The lack of a GvG mode is what hurts. Server transfers and tier stacking, which cause these imbalances, is primarily a result of the lack of a GvG mode. Guild movement across servers is primarily due to wanting to fight new people and gain access to certain other guilds to GvG. Except for free transfers of course.

ANET can correct this isolation by throwing some random match up among servers at the league borders….
for example next week they can throw FA to play in T2, or GoM in T4….. of course there will be blow out, but at least some correction to the rating points can be done….

The rating points should just be reset. Let everyone scuttle up and down and naturally fall where they should be. It was supposed to happen in early 2013, but never did.

The forums blew up with people stating they didn’t want that when it was originally announced. It would result in many weeks of PvD before it settled down to what it is more or less now anyways.
The only solution for this is for guilds from upper tiers to spread out some of its guilds evenly (as much as possible) on the lower tiers but its not going to happen.
Tons of guilds/players out there are too scared to stand on their own and needs to be carried. Human nature I guess?
Anet tried but failed. Free transfers for a limited number of worlds (plus tourney rewards) may cause another HoD effect.
People hate blobbing/imbalance/boring/stale matchups but they still keep on stacking as much as possible, then blame ANET and/or their foes. lol

ANet can look at ways to moderate peoples innate tendencies or not. At the end of the day its just a game and if people are unhappy playing it, they will leave.

People will pay twice as much for easy wins and stale matchups.

Whether its stacking tier 1 or people moving to tier 2 for fights its all gem sales for ANet.
Either way they make money from changing absolutely nothing.
They have made a lot with transfers. FOr a gem being 2 years old, they will never cut down the servers from 24 to 12.
Some of us are stuck in a stagnant unbalanced matchup. So if its a choice between an unbalanced stagnant matchup and unbalanced variety, I’ll take the latter.
About a year and a half ago I suggested Anet manually make the matchups but they’re scared. At least maybe they could make manual tweaks occasionally to correct servers stuck because the Glicko ratings are not quick enough to respond.

Sadly here lies a major conflict of interest for a Free to Play game. Make money now or retain players for later?

End of year financial reports are coming out. We can analyse them in due course.

Just remember, we used to have match up volatility, and people complained. So, Anet made the random matches less volatile. Now, we have people complaining about matches being stale.
This is why anet should not listen to everyone.
