Q:

Greetings!

My name is Towren and I am in charge (I say that very loosely) of a very very small guild of about 9 members from Desolation. We’re just a bunch of real life friends who like to play together for fun. We have little to no interest on becoming a huge WvW guild, we’re not even recruiting – but we are thinking about participating in WvW…

Over the past month or so we’ve been working on our influence, we’re done with the politics line and practically finished with the economics line. We started on the architecture but found guild bank space wasn’t really needed for such a close knit group and have since started on the Art of War line. But we have a couple of questions in regards to the size of our guild, our influence spending patterns, keep claiming… Although we’re not recruiting we are socially minded and if we’re doing WvW we want to help Desolation as best as possible (we’ve all been here since Beta).

So:

As of last night I just qued rank 4 Art of War, and we’ve got all the previous boosts from the Art of War al l lined up and waiting to be activated. How can we best help our server? I see there are only 5 ranks in the Art of War line, so I feel if we’re keep claiming and activating our buffs we could be a significant buff towards allies. I’m presuming the buffs do work on all allies in the area? Or is it just guildies?

What should we be claiming? I was reading the wiki and it was saying how small groups such as ours should be taking supply camps and such – Do we claim those? Whenever I’ve been in WvW it seems they just get zerged, and there doesn’t seem to be much point in claiming them if our buffs could be elsewhere?

Is there anypoint in our guild claiming something as large as Stone mist castle, is that it’s name? You know, the big massive one in the centre of the eternal battlegrounds. Obviously our little guild wouldn’t be able to defend it, but being a maxed out Art of War Guild (which we’ll be by next week) would our buffs be worth it even if we can’t defend it ourselves?

Is there any point in claiming the keeps near to our waypoint, or should we be claiming “front line” keeps t make sure the buffs have max benefit?

And if we do have a keep claimed, and it gets taken by the enemy, is that our buffs used up? Do the buffs attach themselves to the keep for one time use, or are they guild wide buffs that will apply to any keep/camp we claim within the 12 hour window mentioned on the wiki?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Edit: Oh yes, what’s the best time to use our buffs, peak time, night time? Which would help the most!

Hmm i reccomend claiming a tower only and let the other big guilds claim keeps and SM! As there are other upgrades at level 5! I suggest if u want to help ur server! Do supply runs to upgrade your tower and upgrade it yourself! Build seige inside etc!

You can just reclaim another tower once u use your buffs, and dont forget to claim a supply camp too, yes you can claim a camp and tower at the same time!!

Peak time would be best.

The buffs affect all allies within the vicinity of taken tower/keep!

I am in a smaller guild as well and we have often taken towers to defend and buff. Can be extremely fun, especially on reset nights.

There will be down times in between your fights which you can use to gather supplies and siege up your tower.

Dig in and give em hell.

the only thing claiming an objective does is allow the claiming guild to put up buffs. if you want to be a big help there are a couple things you can do:

-turn on only the extra carrying capacity and claim a camp
-claim a front line-ish objective and turn on a few stat buffs, or just everything that affects a players fighting ability
-claim an objective deep in your territory and turn on the couple of buffs that are still useful but not really fighting related (move speed, supply, salvage chance)

beyond that, i generally leave nothing (important) claimed if i dont have any guild buffs up. the buffs are always greatly appreciated whether people say thanks or not.

i dont know if claiming affects influence gains. i hope it doesnt.

WvW Guild buffs apply to all allies (not just guild mates). For example, if you activate the supply buff and claim a supply camp, anyone who picks up supply from that camp will get 15 supply instead of just 10 (if they have >= 10 supply, they’ll need to drop some in order to get 15). I find the supply buff on supply camps to be invaluable. Being able to spend 50% more supply with your group increases your siege options.

Note that all Art of War guild buffs only last for 12 hours. If you ever claim SM and activate all of your buffs, just make sure you claim something else before your buffs wear out / before you all go to bed for the night. In that way, another guild can claim and activate their buffs instead of being blocked by your claim.

As far as I know, a guild can only have one objective claimed in a map. You can also only claim once the Righteous Indignation buff is gone/nearly gone (ie, 4+ minutes after your team has claimed an objective).

Especially for a small guild, getting all the buffs up takes a long time. I’d personally recommend focusing on the supply buff – its the strongest one in most situations, and coordinate with your server to use it on a location before a siege so that your team has significantly more supply to work with.

Once you activate the buff(s) they are good for 12 hours (iirc) If someone takes your claimed camp or tower, you can claim it again to reapply the buff, or you can claim camps as you roam the area if you are a small guild and need everyone to have +15. IE have it follow you.

Once you activate the +15 supply queue it again for the next day right then! It only costs 200 and every single guild should be doing this.

Also, the 1 camp, 1 tower applies per borderland. So if your borderlands aren’t always full, jump to other borderlands and claim there as well for your team. The ones you claimed on the BL you are playing on will remain.

On another note: if your guild has the cash you can buy your way to upgrades by buying drinks for the city of LA. The guy is in a cubby hole by the bank.

My recommendation is to go for a camp and then defend it. If you stick together and stay near that camp and build some arrow carts and ballistae, there’s no reason 9 people couldn’t hold a camp against a zerg of 20 or so and the supply buff is SWEET.

Pangloss mine in Eternal Battlegrounds is perfect for this. It’s in the running for the most defensible spot in WvW.

Actually what happens is the game figures out which of the guilds that helped in the taking of the location had the first claim to the camp/keep/etc.
I ‘believe’ it is worked out based on total number of your guilds players present against the total number of players in your guild, to give you a %. the guild present with the best % of active present players of thier guild gets a 3min window to claim the objective before the objective is open to anyone that wants to claim it.

The only unsure fact in the above is the calculation, but after much testing its the closest we have come to the calc.

Either way, you can claim the objective right away if your are the eligible guild.

Interesting, Kylia. That might explain some inconsistencies I’ve experienced, but I typically just chalked it up to a bug/mistaken perception. I’ll try paying more attention to the timer and our guild’s activity.

Would that mean that a personal guild with just yourself representing could be the first to claim?

I am pretty sure it just depends on who had the most people capture the camp gets first right to claim it. After that it is about a 2 minute wait.
