Instant Death in WvW
No, hasn’t happened to me yet. If it was in SM, I can imagine that due to lag, the position of your char on your pc and on the server became divergent, and you somehow fell to your death on the server, without seeing it on your screen. Then the server sent you the info you are dead. Just a speculation.
I’ve heard of this happening to a few people. Unfortunately there just isn’t much you can do about it other than be resurrected by a kind person, or waypoint to your keep/spawn.
SPECULATION: During the lag, the enemy zerg probably rolled over you. No shame in that, especially if you can’t see what the hell is going on.
EDIT: MORE SPECULATION: The reason the combat log didn’t pick anything up is perhaps because the combat log for each player is compiled locally, rather than on the server. Because on your end “nothing” happened, your combat log didn’t indicate anything, but the server sent the message to your client that you were dead, so you died.*
- *I rarely, if ever check my combat log. So really, I have no clue how it really works

Not at SM but similar: I’ve had this happen at a tower (forget which one now). Was going down some stairs while building siege, and then instant downed state. No enemies around, wasn’t in combat, and no noticeable lag at the time.
On 2 or 3 other occasions, while going down stairs I’ve taken heavy damage (but not enough to be downed) for no apparent reason.
Yes, I died walking down some stairs in the northern EB keep. Totally bizarre. I didn’t look at my combat log though.
When this happens to me I always joke that my character had a sudden heart attack.

The other day I was running from Rouges, past Wildcreek and when I was at the sentry between WC and Stonemist… I was suddenly ported into Wildcreek as if I had walked through the door. Lolwut?!

Yes, I died walking down some stairs in the northern EB keep. Totally bizarre. I didn’t look at my combat log though.
Sometimes the game likes to spam fall damage on you when you go down inclines, I’ve died walking down stairs many times from this.
it’s also been known to do it on level surfaces as well. when i was first leveling my character up right after launch, there were a ton of us in mount maelstrom. we were in the tunnels under the volcano, then suddenly, we all died. it was some sort of terrain bug, because there was an invisible line going from one wall of the tunnel across to the other that counted as massive falling damage to anyone who happened to walk over it. you could jump over it fine, but if you walked, you were dead. the first time i found it, i was alone, and an elemental easily finished me off. the second time, there was a good 20-30, and the last 3 people in the very back who managed to see us all go down managed to stop in time, then began raising us. interestingly enough, we died several more times trying to shift around and rez everyone.
i think it was some sort of seam in the terrain, because a guildmate noticed a few more in other areas. it’s highly unlikely that one would still exist in SM, but anything’s possible.

That sounds both hilarious and tragic. Like the citizens of Tyria occasionally come down with fatal klutziness, and it’s contagious.

This was funny. I would find myself saying something similar in voice chat if this ever happens to me while roaming lol
In my case I never hit their zerg so that was never an issue. I could have fallen but after my first death a person on the balcony bridge brought me up. Then I died again and was brought up once again. I figured if I had fallen I would have eventually been put down on the ground which never happened.
Only direct damage from a player seems to be logged. Siege, condition and several other ways a player can be damaged is not logged.
It is possible you got hit with a big siege hit during the lag but I wouldn’t be surprised if the lag caused you to take falling damage and then rubber-banded you back into place without your client ever seeing it.

I can see this happening if you are running zerker and someone with ballista mastery is trolling you.
its a glitch or a break in the environment where you’re hit box will fall for long enough to take damage and it’ll just be multiplied until you die.
iv’e had that happen to me on jps where i’ll jump on some angled platform at the same height and take falling damage or just instantly die.
and then proceed to be extremely kitten ed.
