Q:
Instant Death without Enemies around
Has happened to me before. Was in a huge 3 way fight, got out of combat, started walking away, lag caught up and I went from 100% hp to 0

The last fight for me was a minute ago against a guard in ruins. Then I ran to the south ruin and died when I reached the stairs behind the ruin. I didnt recognize any lag. And I was plain dead, no downstate.
WTF?
Sometimes the game likes to make you suffer fall damage when you’re running down stairs, especially if you jump a lot like I do. Happens very easily if you take a small amount of fall damage when you jump down a few steps in the stairs around that area – then you keep taking fall damage when you normally run down until you either pause for a moment or die from it.
all is vain

I think this is on purpose. If you hurt your leg and keep walking on it, it hurts more. We all know that if you walk 5 feet on a sprained ankle, you might die IRL, so it happens to help keep things real. >.<

Any steep slope can cause this effect. It’s due to latency and the resulting disagreements about position between your client and the server.
Some areas seem much worse for it than others. The new ruins area is particularly bad, especially the stairs sections. Other problem areas are the switchbacks near the two northern towers and at the southwestern corner area of hills keep. Any stairs/slope can be bad in a laggy fight or if your connection hiccups at the right time.
