Everyone who placed and maintained siege surely knows the pain to log in a hour later and see it all gone, not because of the enemy, but because nobody from the team cared – or knew – to refresh it.

One reason for this is that many simply don’t know about it. The timers, the expiration, I’m talking about the casuals. Why should they do it, if they knew? I see no reason for a casual WvW player to do this boring task, instead of joining the fun.

Let’s give them a reason!

I propose a new type of defense event. It would count the number of siege in a tower that’s below, say, 15 minutes and if there are any, it would show as:

[Event]
Siege in the tower needs maintaining!
- 4 siege machines still need to be maintained

It would grant small amounts of karma and silver per siege ticked, and count as an event for deeds etc. Now when a new WvW player runs around, he will immediately see this event pop up, and will have reason to go into the tower and refresh all siege, without anyone having to beg in map chat to do it.

To make the event a bit harder and balance the gain of karma and gold, also for the sakes of realism, new requirements of maintaining siege could be introduced, mainly:

1. Placed siege expires after 1h
2. Siege can be refreshed for free just by ticking it, as long as the timer is >=15 min
3. Once the siege goes < 15min, the event is generated. All siege that falls below 15 minutes during the event, is added to the event total counter. This siege can no longer be refreshed by just using it. You have to spend 1 supply and use it, to refresh it back to 1h.

Now it is harder and more costly to maintain siege, but you give reason and a beacon to everyone and especially casual players, to do it, which should make it on the whole a lot easier.

I agree with this. On our server It feels like its the same 4 or 5 people maintaining and refreshing siege; this would definitely take a load off of everyone’s shoulders.

Encouraging mindless farming, like Dolyak humping at release, without any strategic thought behind it, that even leads to severe siege imbalances, is rightfully discouraged. If the commander(s) determine that a huge, passive siege defence is needed that should be reward enough.

Not to mention that is actively damaging if there was a griefer who threw a thousand flame rams or generally unwanted siege in the proximity.

Fact is that siege engines do not need refreshing. Game will keep running without them.

Also “casual” player is a dumb term. WvW is open to everyone and every playstyle no one is required to do anything just for you. People can fool around as much as they want and is so many ways they can imagine. It’s not all build sieges, defend this castle no matter the cost until your head explodes.

Why even have siege engine refreshing? It just introduces a mindlessly tedious task that no one wants to do and penalizes the smaller servers. I think it would be better addressed by the following:
- Siege do not require refreshing if they exist in an area controlled by the same faction.
- Siege in an area controlled by another faction decay much faster (5 mins?)
- Siege in a neutral area also decay at a fast rate (10 mins)
- Do not allow flame rams to be place in a controlled area. (Not really any use for them)

I agree and disagree with this topic. This is a great idea but in my opinion the event should be happening more often then, which means as a challenge , the despawn timer gets reduced to 30 minutes. After all the sieges are refreshed , you will complete the event instantly. The event starts again after 15 minutes and will last 15 minutes more(cuz then siege will despawn officially).

Even though with that having said, I think that refreshing siege is a thing that you as a server should arrange. We are promoting in UW for long time to make sure people refresh sieges whenever they run past it. It took like 1 month with us but if your actively promoting it, u should be done in 2 weeks easily.

You mean your suggestion actually rewards people who hang out at towers and keeps and maintain the siege placed therein and can furthermore report enemy attacks faster than the white swords can? I like it.

Not true to all points.

There is nothing more mindless than following a zerg and not sieging or scouting your own towers. This idea not only gives incentive to do IMPORTANT work for the team, but also rewards the people who don’t want to zerg on the WXP train. What’s your problem with that?

Farming this? Have you even thought about it for a while?
A. Spending loads of time, blueprints and supply to build the siege.
B. Waiting 45 minutes!! for the event to appear.
C. Praying that the enemy doesn’t swipe the tower in the meantime.
D. Being abused in the chat by your team because you’re farming.
E. After 45 minutes get small amounts of karma and silver…

Yeah right. Veeeery farmable…. as if people who have the time to farm in WvW need gold or karma Doesn’t anyone like that sit on millions already?

Your griefer argument is meaningless, it can be applied to anything. If someone wants to burn 1000 supply building rams, he will do it, with or without a small reward. He could go with the zerg and get 10x more in 1/10 of the time.

Personally, I’d rather have enemy NPCs lead an assault on towers periodically, much like the dredge and frogs in EB. It would add a bit of diversion if there wasn’t a player there watching said tower.

No we have spent almost a year working together on my server, you rarely see siege with the timer below 50 minutes because we hit a few as we pass.
the reward is all the lootbags from the zergs you repel.
do not add something so easy to exploit

Did you ever try to use rams as defensive siege?
The fear of the #2 skill is awesome in a choke point, for example the top of a set of stairs.

The example of the ram is kinda a big reason I think why despawn timer is there. Ofcourse u want siege to despawn eventually so u can use that siege spot for something else. We all know that there is a limit to maximum amount of siege in a area. That ram will consume perhaps a vital placement for an extra AC/cata/ballista/treb

I never use siege. Ram is boring. Trebuchet and Catapult hard to aim. Golem too slow.

Only good thing Ballistas and AC that are easy to use… but I still don’t like to use them because I prefer to be mobile and being able to move instead of staying at the siege making me main target and then getting hit by enemy AoE.

Also I don’t like to “refresh” siege. Boring. And since I rarely use siege I don’t care. I wouldn’t even do it if there were Karma.

I don’t think it is meant to play that way… you should either build the siege… then use it. And after it is used do other stuff… and let it disappear if not really needed within that 60 minutes. Then rebuild later. That’s why the sm, keeps and towers can hold a lot of supply – so you can just build some sieges when the enemy is attacking.

Also: They should just remove the timer. That is crap. Siege should be owned by playes. And the players should be able to remove them as place them as needed. With a cap per player. If the player logs out then a timer should start do auto remove(also it should be possible to transfer ownership if you plan on logging out permanently so some other player can be the owner of these siege).
